Kleinfelder is currently serving as the prime consultant responsible for the project management, bridge planning, design engineering, and environmental documentation services for the replacement of this 610-foot-long bridge over the Sweetwater River in the City of Chula Vista.
keeping the project on scheduleThe two most critical issues for this project are the hydraulic analysis and the biological studies. For the hydraulic analysis, the project was evaluated using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flow rates and Caltrans guidelines to pass the 100-year event and the 50-year event with two feet of freeboard. The biological studies included protocol surveys for special-status species, wetland delineation, Natural Environmental Study, and a Biological Assessment. On-time completion of these studies was essential in keeping the project on schedule.
replacement versus rehabilitation studiesAs the prime consultant, Kleinfelder is responsible for the preliminary engineering, the development of a joint EA/IS/MND document, and final design activities. This project included detailed replacement versus rehabilitation studies to support the Federal Highway Bridge Program funding guidelines.
