EUROPE’S LEADING VENUE FOR CHAMBER MUSIC AND SONG
WELCOME TO OUR 2013 SUMMER SEASON
Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel make theireagerly awaited Wigmore Hall debut with a collectionof pieces drawn from the extraordinarily rich repertoireof works conceived to intensify the experience ofpublic worship. Dramatic contrasts and heightenedlyricism helped fuel the force of 17th-century Frenchsacred music. Crowds flocked to hear Charpentier’smusic for Holy Week in the Paris of the 1680s, whilethe outstanding music of Sébastien de Brossardand Pierre Bouteiller graced cathedral services inStrasbourg and Troyes. Niquet’s ensemble, completewith twelve male vocalists, knows how to recreatethe sensual and spiritual atmosphere of a lost ageof music-making.
Artistic integrity, a voice of extraordinary tonal rangeand personal charisma belong to the armoury oftalents that have securely placed Karita Mattilaamong the world’s most admired performers. HerWigmore Hall recital offers a programme guaranteedto reveal the many facets of the Finnish dramaticsoprano’s art, applied here to a delicious blend ofsongs from three countries.
Other vocal highlights include visits from DorotheaRöschmann and Ian Bostridge in Mahler (with JuliusDrake), Sarah Connolly, John Mark Ainsley andHenk Neven in French song (with Graham Johnson),and Christopher Maltman (with Julius Drake) inEisler’s The Hollywood Songbook. Eisler was forcedinto exile following the rise to power of the Nazis, and the composer was then able to continue hisclose collaboration with Bertolt Brecht in Hollywood. His Hollywood Songbook weaves together texts byBrecht, Mörike, Hölderlin and Goethe to form one of
the greatest of all 20th-century song-cycles. Othervisitors include Anna Caterina Antonacci, JulianeBanse, and, following a long held ambition of mine,we welcome mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch.
Wigmore Hall’s Associate Artists, the Takács Quartet, explore two towering masterworks of chambermusic in their latest programme. They join forceswith Ralph Kirshbaum for Schubert’s C majorString Quintet, completed a few months beforethe composer’s death in 1828 and overlooked forpublication for another quarter century. Over thepast 160 years, the work has acquired near-mythicstatus as one of the greatest of all chambercompositions. Beethoven’s String Quartet in C sharpminor Op. 131 likewise inhabits the pantheonreserved for great works of art. The piece, writtentwo years before Schubert’s String Quintet, pushesat the limits of human imagination. Other chambermusic highlights include visits from the HagenQuartet (in Beethoven), Casals Quartet (in Schubert),and the Borodin Quartet (in Brahms and Tchaikovsky).
Every phrase and nuance of the works programmedfor Wigmore Hall’s Fauré Project has entered thecollective consciousness of these French andFrench-trained performers: the Capuçon brothers, violist Gérard Caussé, pianists Nicholas Angelichand Michel Dalberto, and Quatuor Ebène haveinhabited Fauré’s art for years, digging deep intohis soundworld.
‘Beethoven’s music is, for me, the most human anddeeply spiritual music there is,’ observes Leif OveAndsnes. The Norwegian pianist, recently describedby the Wiener Zeitung as ‘a sensitive and quietvirtuoso’, is in the midst of a journey in companywith Beethoven’s five piano concertos and theMahler Chamber Orchestra. His evolving thoughtson the composer’s art can be heard in the two-movement Piano Sonata Op. 54, a study in thematicconcision and expressive breadth, and the oftendream-like Piano Sonata Op. 101 of 1816. Theromantic worlds of Liszt and Chopin naturally flowfrom Andsnes’s choice of Beethoven sonatas.
As ever, there are plenty more concerts I couldmention, but I leave you to explore the brochurefor yourself, and will look forward to seeing you atWigmore Hall throughout the summer season.

La Resurrezione was written for performance atEaster in Rome in 1708 during the season whenopera was banned in the city by papal decree.Handel’s sacred oratorio offers a dramaticportrayal of the battle that took placed betweenGod (represented by an Angel) and the Devilafter Jesus’s crucifixion. This is one of thecomposer’s most colourful scores, small wondergiven that the excellent orchestra at its firstperformances was led by the famous Italianviolinist, Arcangelo Corelli.

GEORGE BENJAMIN DAYInternational influences informed George Benjamin’s musical outlook from ayoung age. Born in London in 1960, he began composing at the age of sevenand studied piano and composition during his formative years with thedistinguished German musician Peter Gellhorn. Benjamin went on to studyduring his teens with Olivier Messiaen in Paris and Alexander Goehr inCambridge. ‘Beethoven’s music is, for me, the mosthuman and deeply spiritual music there is,’observes Leif Ove Andsnes. The Norwegianpianist, recently described by the WienerZeitung as ‘a sensitive and quiet virtuoso’,is in the midst of a journey in company withBeethoven’s five piano concertos and theMahler Chamber Orchestra. His evolvingthoughts on the composer’s art can be heardin the two-movement Piano Sonata Op. 54,a study in thematic concision and expressivebreadth, and the often dream-like PianoSonata Op. 101 of 1816. The romantic worldsof Liszt and Chopin naturally flow fromAndsnes’s choice of Beethoven sonatas.

Vibrant conductor Nicholas Collon, recentlypraised by The Times for ‘making an audiencehear anew’, makes his AAM debut in a programmecharting the inspiration of the night on Mozartand Haydn. The sense of freedom which theevening brings is conjured up by two ‘Notturnos’,works written for late-night concerts where asmall ensemble would entertain an audience withlight-hearted and stimulating music. Mozart’sAdagio and Fugue takes a different view ofdarkness; inspired by J S Bach, the music broodssolemnly with powerful, rich orchestral depth. Two symphonies complete the programme. With‘Le Soir’, Haydn took on the age-old challengeof depicting nature in music, but also used theopportunity to show off the textures, stylesand skills of his orchestra to a new prince andpatron. Mozart’s Symphony No. 27, meanwhile, takes on the spontaneity and free-thinking ofhis Serenata notturna in a work brimming withdeft music-making.

INTRODUCTION TO ROMANTIC MUSIC
The Romantic era is characterised by fascinatingand compelling ideas such as the cult ofvirtuosity; the growing relationship betweenwords and music; and the notion of expansionin terms of length of work, size of orchestralforces and the musical language itself. Therealso emerged a split between the forces of‘progress’, such as Liszt and Wagner, andconservatives like Brahms and ultimately, atthe end of the 19th century, ‘modernism’emerged from the embers of late romanticism.ROY STRATFORD will guide us through thefascinating story of this period with particularreference to the profound changes that occurredin the musical language and introducing some ofthe amazing musicians who made it all happen.

They join forces with Ralph Kirshbaum for Schubert’s C major StringQuintet, completed a few months before the composer’s death in 1828 and overlooked for publicationfor another quarter century. Over the past 160 years, the work has acquired near-mythic status asone of the greatest of all chamber compositions. Beethoven’s String Quartet in C sharp minor Op. 131

Anna Caterina Antonacci’s recital of 19th- and early20th-century liriche da camera was a bright highlightof Wigmore Hall’s 2011/12 season. ‘Her legato line is a liquid wonder,’ observed Richard Morrison inThe Times, ‘but when the poem requires a conversationto be animated, she characterises each voice in amarvellously deft parlando.’ Antonacci and DonaldSulzen return this season for a recital rooted in poeticimagery and dramatic contrasts. She shares the stagewith the Heath Quartet in Respighi’s Il tramonto (1914),a meditative response to Shelley’s poem about a young man who dies in his lover’s arms.
