WORKS BY SCHUBERT

In Wigmore Hall’s 110th anniversarycelebrations, Daniel Barenboim, who firstappeared here at the age of 15, will bewelcomed back with great warmth.Renowned for his Beethoven performances, which have thrilled audiences in Londonand around the world in recent years,he now turns to the fierce German’syounger Viennese contemporary, FranzSchubert. Every bit as much of a pioneerof Romantic pianism as Beethoven,Schubert excelled both in miniaturesand in large-scale sonatas. His late music, composed as he grew aware of his imminentdeath from syphilis, the scourge of theRomantic artist, reaches levels of almostheart-breaking intensity.

The Dante String Quartet has been gathering plaudits for itsrichly varied repertoire on disc and has rapidly gained a widefan base from festival appearances throughout the UK andbeyond. Here, for Wigmore Hall, the quartet opens withHaydn’s very last work in the genre, only the second and thirdmovements of which he completed. Schumann turned to Haydnfor inspiration when he composed three quartets in theremarkable ‘year of chamber music’, 1842. Sibelius’s onlystring quartet is far too rarely heard in public but its intimatesounds come from the heart.

STUDY AFTERNOONDECADE BY DECADE: 100 YEARS OF GERMAN SONG1810–1910
With SUSAN YOUENS and MALCOLM MARTINEAU
In the 1,382 pages of Ernst Challier’s Great Song Catalogue of1885, thousands of 19th-century songs are listed – and it is anincomplete catalogue. The rise of commercial music publishing, great poets who wrote of subjective experience and visionaryworlds, and great composers interested in new relationshipsbetween poetry and music were all factors in the creation of arich and evolving genre. This study afternoon will trace thehistory of familiar and unfamiliar songs, discovering the poetsfavoured by composers from Beethoven to Berg and exploringhow composers responded to one another’s songs over thespan of 100 years.

He brings three pillars of the piano repertoire tothis Wigmore Hall recital. When Schumann heard the news ofSchubert’s death in 1828 he was reputed to have wept allnight. The C minor Sonata was one of Schubert’s final triptychand Schumann’s Fantasy, although designed originally as atribute to Beethoven, also seems haunted by Schubert’slyrical genius.

BEETHOVEN String Quartet in Bb Op. 130 withGrosse Fuge Op. 133
The Jupiter Quartet is so named because theplanet dominated the skies when it was formedten years ago and is also an astrological symbolfor the number four. They tackle a work which isarguably the brightest in the quartet repertoire’sconstellation of masterworks – Beethoven’s lateBb Quartet, which they will perform as originallyintended, with the Grosse Fuge as finale. Thechallenge of late Beethoven was suitably metin Bartók’s pioneering single-movement ThirdQuartet and will also echo through the pages ofWebern and Kurtág.

One of the brightest of the new crop of vocal groups specialising in early music, Stile Antico won aGramophone Award in 2009 for its collection ‘Song of Songs’. This typically resourceful programmefor Wigmore Hall’s Early Music and Baroque Series contrasts English sacred masterpieces from theElizabethan and Stuart eras with contemporary works from the European continent, and will alsodemonstrate rare versatility in introducing a piece by leading British composer John McCabe.

To conclude the survey ‘Decade by Decade: 100 Years ofGerman Song’, American diva Susan Graham joins MalcolmMartineau for a programme which finds Europe on the cusp of anew century and a new style. Mahler was to die in 1911 andwas a powerful influence on a group of Viennese composersled by Schoenberg, who would eventually take them over theabyss of World War I into serialism and beyond. Such concerns, however, left Reger and Lehár untouched.
