1. Error message

When using 25 mm thick blanks, the following error message <<Problem: milling depth>> may occur during the calculation of the

milling paths:

1.1 Meaning of the error message The milling depth of the ZENOTEC MINI tools is 20 mm for coarse milling (2.5 mm) and 15 mm for fine milling (1.0 mm and 0.7 mm). During setup of the ZENOTEC CAM software, the collision test in <<Tool settings>> is set to <<Medium>> (B) for all tools. <<Medium>> means that the tool is checked for a possible collision from the tip of the cutter to the conical transition to the shank (A).

1.5 Cause and prevention

1.5.1 Position of the digital restoration in the blank If the shank diameter of the tool is required to penetrate into the material deeper than the milling length (B), the error message <<Problem: milling depth>> (A) is returned when the milling path is calculated. This often occurs in the case of large-span bridges which are not ideally positioned within the blank.

(A) (B)

In most cases, the error message <<Problem: milling depth>> can be averted by optimizing the height of the work within the blank. To optimize the position, place the work horizontally and centrally within the blank. This prevents the tool which caused the message <<Problem: milling depth>> to occur at the lowest point of the fine milling path from penetrating below the edge of the blank (B), so that the job is then correctly calculated (A).

1.5.2 Geometry of the digital restoration / milling job

However, instances may occur in which the message <<Problem: milling depth>> still appears in spite of the height having been optimized. This is due to the geometry of the digital restoration. In the following screenshot, the geometry of the last molar on the right renders it impossible to mill the work evenly from above and from below. In order to prevent wasting material, the palatinal area of the tooth is mainly milled from above, whereby the shank diameter of the finishing tool extends below the edge of the blank.

In such cases the digital restoration must be checked for collisions. To do this, use Button (A) to activate the milling path and the blank, use the slider (B) to find the lowest point of the milling paths and check whether the diameter of the tool shank or the ring markings collide with the edge of the blank.

If there is no contact with the edge of the blank, then no collision should occur and the message <<Problem: milling depth>> can be ignored and the work can be milled. To do this, go back to <<Nest>>, <<right click>> on the job, select <<tooth information>> and click on the message <<Ignore milling depth>> (A) in the window shown below.

(A)

If the edge of the blank is touched, this can sometimes be averted by extending the milling area. 1.6 Millability limit

If contact is still made with the edge of the blank in spite of optimizing the height of the work and setting the maximum milling area extension, this means that an area has been reached which because of the geometry of the digital restoration can not be milled from a 25 mm blank in the ZENOTEC MINI.
