DESCRIPTION

What is the value of an opened dataset? The value depends on a series of elements, both intrinsic and extrinsic. The quality of the dataset is something we usually measure, the intrest of a dataset is something we measure, but we can't measure the ecosystem value of a given dataset.

A question for you…

The big question

Do we know the impact the opened

data has on Economy?

Page 8: Why we need metrics

The classics

 Usage metrics

 Visualization metrics

 Reuse metrics

 Download metrics

 Cool!!!

Do these infos represent the real impact or the real value of the datasets?

Rethinking metrics

A new model for Data Metrics

The dimensions on which we can work on this model can be

Spatial (do neighbours have a dataset?)

Topic-driven (do we talk about the same stuff?)

Time-bound (do we have a history about that data?)

Page 11: Why we need metrics

A new model for Data Metrics - Space Cool! Very Uncool L

A new model for Data Metrics - Time

Time series (EuroStat, ISTAT, National Statistics agencies) J

Anyone else? L Municipalities have lots of historical data!

A new model for Data Metrics - Topic

Ontologies! à We have lots of people working on them!!

We have ENORMOUS amounts of CSVs…

Can we give semantics to everything? SURE!!

Page 14: Why we need metrics

Wait that’s cool for anything BUT GLAM Data

Let’s see Guernica…

Spatial information:   Guernica is about Guernica (Location)

  Guernica is in Madrid (Location)

Guernica was painted in Paris (Location)

  Time information:

  Guernica was painted in 1937

Guernica was exposed at the MoMA until September 1981

Guernica was exposed at the Casón del Buen Retiro until 1992

Guernica is exposed at the Museo Reina Sofía

Topic Information:   Guernica is about War, pain,

  Guernica is about Guernica (Location)

Guernica is about The bombing of Guernica (Event in space and time)

  Guernica is enormously complex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernica_(painting)#The_painting

So now what?

We now have the three dimensions. Are they enough? Are they too much?

Europeana: has all of them (in part) [depending on the availability of the single institutions]

City of Chicago: Has all of them and they are pretty well structured [lots of id columns enabling foreing keys]

  Most datasets: L

Let’s discuss this!!! Thanks, by the way!
