Under direction of the courts, the public defenders are appointed by the court to rep-resent indigent persons charged with crimes. Public defender services normally do not extend to non-criminal matters. The public defenders are private attorneys who serve the county under contract; additional attorneys are appointed to specific cases as needed.

cases involving less that $10,000, small claims, traffic infractions, and preliminary hearings on felony cases.
