A yearly tradition that begins each spring provides a significant boost to the Whidbey Island economy.

Farmers markets take place throughout Whidbey Island beginning in April and continuing through the summer before wrapping up in September and October. Those markets inject hundreds of thousands of dollars to the operations of Whidbey’s farmers, crafters and food producers.

“I think they are a great way to call attention to local products and local producers,” said Jill Johnson, executive director of the Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

She added the limited hours and the limited days the farmers markets operate provide a “call to action” that encourages people to shop, which, in turn, stimulates the economy.

“I don’t see a real downside to them,” Johnson said, adding the markets provide small business owners a place to sell their products. Many couldn’t afford a traditional storefront.

The Coupeville Farmers Market opened in early April. It was the first market to start selling for the year. Other markets take place

in Oak Harbor and Greenbank, with two in the Bayview area.

During a recent visit, farmers were already on hand selling greens, potatoes and starter plants in Coupeville. In addition, the usual host of crafters, artisans and cooks were on hand to provide shoppers with a chance to buy a unique gift, get a great addition to their garden or enjoy a nice lunch.

The farmers markets in Coupeville and Oak Harbor have achieved financial strength in recent years. Farmers market manager Peg Tennant noted Coupeville had its best year yet in 2011.

In Coupeville, vendors sold more than $345,000 in 2011, which averaged to $12,800 per day and $3,200 per hour. The market attracted 20 farmers, 12 food processors, six cooks, 23 crafters and 43 nonprofit groups throughout 2011, according to information provided by Tennant.

“Our market is a really, really great market,” said Lynda Eccles, executive director for the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce. She noted Coupeville’s market attracts people from across the island, along with riders from the Victoria Clipper when it docks at the Coupeville Wharf on Saturdays.

In Oak Harbor, vendors sold more than $295,000 throughout 2011, which averaged to $14,700 per day and $4,927 per hour. Oak Harbor’s market attracted 23 farmers, 31 food processors, eight cooks, 30 crafters and 41 nonprofit groups throughout 2011.

The markets are more than

a place to provide fresh food. They’re a place to find out what’s happening on Whidbey Island, to get involved with a favorite group, or just kill some time on a warm, lazy day.

“It’s really become part of the community’s identity,” Johnson said of the farmers market experience on Whidbey Island.
