FIVE new step-by-step tutorials for you to try, including aspecial guest tutorial by Kristy Dalman of Some Odd GirlStamps on how to color snow!

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 71 October 2012, Issue 10

Hi! Kristy Dalman, the owner/artist of Some Odd Girl here thrilled to be bring youa tutorial that I hope will be helpful during your winter and holiday crafting! I wantto share with you how I color SNOW. You can also take this idea and apply it tocoloring white items (polar bears, flowers, etc etc) but the colors I'll be using willbe specific to the white stuff that keeps me indoors during the winter.

Lets get started!

Step 1: I'm using Snowman Tobie, well primarily the snowman part of the image, in this tut along withCopic colors BG70, BG72, BG90, BG93, BG96 and the optional color of YR30.

So when coloring white anything what you are trying to do is to add shape and dimension to the objectusing your shading but without over powering the white color... or its not going to look white is it? :) So weare leaving the bulk of the image just as it prints out and then adding our colors just into the shadow andshaded portions.

SnowTutorial by Kristy Dalman

Tips & Tutorials: Coloring Snow

Step 3: then I use my Colorless Blender, 0, and just"smooth it out"

Step 2: The first thing I do is to use BG70, which is a super light greyishblue-green, to establish my shape. So on the snowman to make eachsection look rounder and kind of lumpy. Adding texture is a great wayto add interest to white objects without overpowering the white!

Step 4: While its still wet, I add in BG72 to add more shading andtexture. Snow is lumpy after you roll it into a ball so showing thatonly adds to your coloring.

Step 5: Then to add more "shadow" while keeping the coolfeel, I'm adding in BG93 to add to the shape and texture.

Tips & Tutorials: Coloring Snow

Step 6: Now, as I like a pop in contrast no matter what I'm coloring, Iadd in BG96 to the darkest portions of the shadows. You might thinkthat a color that dark would be too much on something that is supposeto be white but white really does have more shadow than you think!Try it! I really think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Step 7: To kind of "soften" my texture and bring the colorstogether I first use BG90 to go over the areas I added inBG93/BG96 still using the same type of motion I did to add thetexture. Then over it all the same thing was done with BG70.

Step 8 (optional): We've done a nice job of really showing theshape of our snowman here with our shading with the BGs butif you want to give it an extra kick why not at a highlight to thetop to add to the roundness of the snowman. I used YR30,which is a subtle color. It makes the cold snow feel like its outon a sunny winter's day.

I hope you've enjoyed how I like to color snow and I hope thishelps you when you go ward off the chill with some funcoloring this winter!

Christmas Crackers - invented in England and usually pulled at the Christmastable or at parties can be easily self-made. I also like the idea that I can fill thecrackers myself with little things like candies, chocolates or small gifts, ratherthan have the pre-filled ones. In this tutorial I like to show you how you can eas-ily and quickly make your own crackers.

What you’ll need:- paper rolls (toilet paper, paper towels) orcardboard to make your own- tissue paper in desired color or gift wrappingpaper- cracker snaps - if not widely available in yourcountry you can order them online or aroundChristmas time they are also sometimes available incraft stores like Michaels (US)- ribbon or string- designer paper long enough to fit around thecracker- sentiment, colored image, embellishments todecorate the cracker- filling - what every you like to put inside thecracker

Step 1: I used a paper roll from toilet paper and cut it in half. I don't want mycracker to be that large butyou can make your cracker as big as you like ofcourse. Then cut a piece of tissue paper to wrap around your paper roll. Thesize of the paper should be about 3 times as wide as your paper roll is and longenough to wrap around the paper roll a few times. I used tissue paper and be-fore I cut it to the desired size I folded it so it was in 3-4 layers.

Step 2: Add a little bit of glue to the paper roll tosecure the tissue paper before wrapping. Don'tglue the whole length, it would make the crackerhard to pull apart later.

Step 3: Now start wrapping you paper roll.

Step 4: At the end I folded the paper over once to have aclean seam and added a little glue again to secure the tissuepaper.

Step 5: This is how your wrapped paper roll looks from theinside now.

Step 6: It's time now to add the cracker snap. Don't glue on thewhole snap, it won't snap later. Just add a little dot of glue tothe ends or if you prefer gluing it in the middle, just add a smalldot right where the actual 'snap' is.

Step 7: Insert your snap into the roll and adhere the endswith the glue to the tissue paper.

Step 8: Tie one end of the cracker using ribbon or string. Becareful not to tear the paper and/or the cracker snap.

Step 9: Here you can see the snap inside the tied paper. Step 10: Fill your cracker! I filled mine with two candies andsome punched out stars

Step 11: Carefully tie the other end.

Step 12: We can now start decorating the cracker. I like to addmatching designer paper, wrapping it around the cracker. Thisdoesn't only look nice it also adds a little bit more stability tothe cracker and makes it easier to adhere your embellishments.

Step 13: The cracker with the added designer paper. Now addyour embellishments. Step 14: I've added a sentiment, paper flower, punched out

snowflake, star and some glitter

Here’s a little step-by-step tutorial on how to create a shaped Easel card. I’veused a Spellbinders Label shape here in this example, but you can use any kindof shape you want to! No matter you are using a label shape, a heart shape ora circle or whatever you want, the basic technique remains the same.

What you’ll need:die cutting machine, metal die to cut out shape, stamps and embellishments, tape/glue, paper

Step 1: Create a card base from white cardstock and score it in half, so it is slightly larger than the shape you want to use and tapedown the die (to create the shape) so the card fold will not be cut

Tutorial by Sylvia Blum

2 3Step 2: This is what it looks from the back when you tapedthe die down correctly.

Step 3: Run it through your die cutting machineand this is what you will get this.

Tips & Tutorials: Easel Card

Step 4: Score the left flap of your card in the center

Step 5: Now choose the patterned papers you want to use on your cardand die cut them using the same shape than for your card base. Adhereone of them to the bottom of your card. Put adhesive (I like to use tape, but you can use whatever glue you usually use) to the side of the upperflap of your card that is in front of you, when folding down the scored line(see photo). It’s very important you ONLY put adhesive onto this half andNOT to the whole flap!!!

Step 6:Adhere the second patterned paper to thefront (see photo). It’s helpful to put a brad or but-ton onto the bottom flap of the card, so the fronthas a ‘stop’ when opened up. Now it’s time to em-bellish to your liking and you’re done.

Muslin bags are very versatile and also make great gift bags. Jazz them up to match yourcards or as a unique packaging for this very special gift. In this tutorial I would like to showyou how to stamp and color on muslin fabric using Copic markers and Prisma pencils.

What you’ll need:- Muslin bag of desired size (Important: pre-washed and ironed)- stamp of your choice- Memento dye ink (I used Tuxedo Black)- piece of cardstock that will fit in the bag- Copic markers (or other alcohol markers)- Prisma pencils (I prefer Prisma pencils as they aresmooth and soft (due to being wax based) and easyto color with on fabric)- Some scrap fabric to practice- …and of course, embellishments of your choice todecorate your bag later on.

Tutorial by Iris Wiechmann

Step 1: To avoid stains on the back of your bag while coloring, slide in a piece of white cardstock as protective sheet. It alsomakes a great base for coloring.

1 2Step 2: The image I'm using is 'Little Jack Drumming' by Elisabeth Bellfor Whimsy Stamps. Make sure you pre-wash (no fabric softener) andiron your muslin bag before applying any ink to it. Now stamp your im-age onto the fabric. Do not press too hard or leave the stamp on toolong as the image might become fuzzy. Remember you are stamping onfabric not on cardstock. The fibers of the fabric soak up the ink quicklyand if you press too hard or have the stamp sitting on the fabric toolong the ink might bleed and your image will look blurry. You can al-ways practice on a piece of scrap fabric.

Tips & Tutorials: Coloring on Muslin

Step 3: We will lay down a base color with Copics and add shadowsusing Prisma pencils. I start with the hat using E42. Coloring directlyon the fabric is somewhat different from coloring on paper. The inkof the pen travels fast on the fabric fibers. So it is very importantthat you color very light handed with soft, light, flicking strokes.Don't have the nib of the pen touching the fabric too long! And alsodo not color all the way to the edges of your image. Let the inktravel and then decide if more ink is needed. The fabric can be oversaturated easily it can bleed very quickly over the lines.

Step 4: Continue with the skin and E000. I always go with alighter color choice. In my experience the inks turn out a littledarker on the fabric than they would on paper. And rememberwe are adding shadow later with pencils.

Step 5: I use G21 and YG93 for the holly leaves and the hat band.Step 6: R05 for the sweater and some accents and YG91 for thepants. Take extra care when using red. I have found that redbleeds quicker than other colors do.

3 4

7

Step 7: Continue coloring your image. E35 was used for the top ofthe hat and part of the shoes, YG93 for the scarf and cuffs on pantsand sweater. R02 for some patches, E30 for the shoes and shirt.

Step 8: At last I colored the cat and the drum using Y15 andYR23 for the parts I want to appear golden. The cat was coloredusing W1 and I added a little B0000 to the drum to have the

Tips & Tutorials: Coloring on Muslin

Step 10: Continue adding shadows and depth to the rest ofthe image. Prisma colors used in addition to the ones al-ready listed before: kelp green, chocolate, warm grey50%, light cerulean blue, muted turquoise, crimson red, peach, beige, blush pink, french grey 50%, light umber

Step 9: Now we are adding shadows and giving the imagesome depth using Prisma pencils. Due to their waxy andsoft nature you can also blend the Prismas easily on fabric ifdesired. use your fingers, apiece of scrap fabric or a cottonball/Q-Tip to do so. (NO blending medium!) I start usingdark brown on the hat. Just start where it would be thedarkest and then you can built up color. More pressurewhere it would be darkest and with a light touch where it isgoing to blend in the marker color. I used the followingpencils on the hat: dark brown, sepia, olive green, peacockgreen, raspberry, french grey 70%

Step 12: After finishing coloring I recommend heat setting the imagewith an iron to prevent the pencil colors from rubbing off. Use a dryiron (NO steam) and pressing on the back of the image. Put an ab-sorbent piece of paper between your image and the ironing board.

Step 11: The final coloring steps will be adding an outlineand some shadows on the floor. For the outline I usednon-photo blue and cool grey 70% for the shadows.

One more close-up look on the image and the bag isready to be decorated.

To decorate your bag you can use whatever you like and you have onhand. I used ribbon, lace, self-adhesive gems, paper flowers, jinglebells, burlab string, die cuts, Stickles, etc.

I hope I could inspire you with this tutorial to try coloring onfabric/muslin, it's a lot of fun and has a great effect!
