It was 1986 when I last made an exhibition (of myself) in the space which is now Paul Johnstone Gallery.

The Latin Tavern occupied the building then and was the obvious place for a glass of red wine and a plate of pasta, before leaving the next day for the opening of my exhibition in London.

We had just driven fourteen hours through swamps and rivers to get to Darwin from deep in Arnhem Land.

The continued time our old Toyota spent in the water had taken its toll on the brakes which failed to save us from mounting the kerb, rolling across the footpath and entering the restaurant via the front window in a waterfall of glass shards — bull bar first!

Gender equality was not evident in those days I soon realised from the response of the lucky diners who all escaped injury, as did the drinks fridge, waitstaff and the manager. Janette received brandy and comfort, while I received abuse.

All has been resolved and 33 years later not only have I found the courage to show my face to these walls again, but also to hang my new paintings on them.

“Whimsy” is a collection of varied work of different themes, styles and media. Subjects range from the “Weather” to “Studies for Platters” to figure studies of my models in gowns and dresses in abstract patterned fabric. Two of these paintings have been reproduced on fabric for real dresses, gowns and shoes for this years autumn fashion collection by Nonita Respati of Purana Indonesia, released throughout Asia, Europe and South Africa.
