The Motherland Calls Hutz Home
Kyiv clubbers don’t
seem to care whether it’s the money or the Motherland that calls lead
singer of Gogol Bordello, Eugene Hutz, home each year. They’re just happy he and
his crew schedule them in.
Kyiv CultureVadym Mishkoriz
Coming to the capital amid their extensive European tour this 2 December, the show they’ve prepared is a little dif-ferent from what fans of this Gypsy-punk group have come to expect. With only five out of the regular eight performers
making an appearance, Hutz together with violinist Serhiy Ryabtsev, accordionist Yuriy Lemeshev, percussionist Pedro Eraso-Segovia and back vocalist Elizabeth San have put together something special. It’s called Gogol Bordello Acoustic. While you might think this new project is pretty self explanatory, Hutz is a bit of a trickster and we’re not too sure about what to believe. Read on. You’ll see what we mean.
Who is Gogol Bordello and what’s the most important thing for you in the music you play? Actually playing the music is the most important thing for us. And hopefully in that, we create a sense of transcontinental community.
How and when did you realise you had crossed over into stardom?Coming back after one particular show I took a shower with six girls. It was then I realised we were getting kinda popular. There was no plan, but then it wasn’t a surprise either. I would have been more surprised had we not reached this point. To travel the world and play music is a great feeling indeed. This is the reason behind trying to stay popular.
What do you think your life would have been like if your family had chosen to remain in Ukraine back in the 80s? I can’t see my life being much different had we stayed. I would still be playing music. Growing up, I can remember listening to Nick Cave, Par-liament Funkadelic and Deep Purple, and I was always skipping school to hang out at the Balka black market.
Did you learn to sing and play music at a school or institution or are you self-taught? I graduated from the musical academy of Jimi Hendrix and then took my symphonic major in Dead Kennedy’s Royal Academy. That’s how I got the job conducting a girl’s choir. It was renamed Gogol Bordello after all the girls got pregnant, at which point I had to hire the winners of the Saklaniski Island Idol competition.
How do you write your songs? From where do you draw such di-verse inspiration? I usually start a song and then pass it onto John who adds a couple of lines and passes it back to me. George usually adds a few licks at this point and then passes it onto Ringo who doesn’t add anything at all. He’s got a cool haircut though so we keep him in the band. It’s so dark and gloomy in Liverpool we spend most of our time drawing inspiration from Ravi Shankar [legendary sitar virtuoso].
Who stages your shows? Our shows are conducted via satellite from space. Although we haven’t actually met the conductor yet. As a musician, singer and songwriter, what is the greatest award you’ve been given? Our greatest gift is the opportunity to travel the world and play our music as often as we want. What are some of your plans for the future?Aside from the creative stuff, we are pretty busy running everything in New York and Brazil. That said, I’m pretty excited about bringing some good stuff back home. There are plans in fact to open a bar here in Kyiv. We were also just alerted by Virgin Airlines that we qualify for flights into space because of all our air miles. So we are certainly looking for-ward to being the first band to record in the cosmos.
What are your thoughts about performing in Ukraine and what do you expect from this upcoming show? I love playing Ukraine! My connection with the music scene is much tighter here. Everyone knows me from the hey-day of Ukrainian punk rock so there is no chronological confusion or strange comparisons with bands that came much later. I come from a long line of ethno punk rockers like VV, Brothers Gadyukyny and Kollezsi Assesor. Later I en-countered other mentors like Manu Negra, Fugazi and The Pogues. What’s it going to be like to see Gogol Bordello playing acoustic? The acoustic show gives fans the chance to see the songs they know played at a grassroots level. It’s all very intimate and a great way to re-ally get to know our audience.

Swan Lake Star Anastasiya Volochkova solo project, Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre (Ivana Franka 3)25 November at 19.00Anastasiya Volochkova is a Russian ballerina famous for her beautiful feet, graceful hands and over-sized (for a dancer) body. Beginning her career as a principal dancer at the St. Pe-tersburg Mariinsky Theatre, she quickly became the Bolshoi’s Swan Princess, handing her fame on a platter. Her scandalous dismissal only added to her notoriety, something she has since used to her advantage. Working on personal projects, which unite ballet and gymnastics, she is bringing her new show coupled with a few world famous opera stars to the Ukrainian capital, and promises a night you won’t soon forget. Tickets are 150 – 1200hrv. For more information call 279-5921.

A New Assai, A New AlbumAssai (Russia, rap, hip-hop), Arena (Baseina 2a)30 November at 20.00Oleksiy Kosov, aka Assai, will be in Kyiv this week with his most recent album, (((Om))). Parting ways with rap group Krec in 2009, Kosov has made his solo career his main focus. Pick-ing up musicians here and there in the last year, they have since played an astounding 75 concerts and released an al-bum soon to be heard in Arena. In contrast to other local rap-pers and hip-hoppers in the CIS, Assai uses as few electronic sounds as he can. This, he thinks, is what makes him special. If you’ve ever heard him, he may not be far off. Admission is 170 – 300hrv. For more information call 492-0000.

Antiques Close-upGrand Antique Salon, Mystetsky Arsenal (Lavrska 10-12)8 – 18 DecemberGrand Antique Salon is Ukraine’s largest display of antique items. Saying Goodbye INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL The Children of Chornobyl Relief and Development Fund gathered on 20 November to reveal some very sad news indeed. The non-profit charitable organisation’s founders, Dr Zenon and Nadia Matkiwsky, have decided to retire, which means the fund will be retiring as well. Requesting the presence of friends throughout the city, both founders and staff wanted to thank everyone for their help in establishing some much needed medical programmes here in Ukraine. Highlighting Ukraine’s First Comprehensive Telemedicine Programme in particular, speakers also reaclled fabulous memories made over the more than 20 years of existence. We’ll miss you CCRDF.

All Things ConsideredThe Imminence of Gas Deals
So Hot that the Ukrainian govern-
ment now sees fit to announce a new
degree of imminence daily. How im-
minent can something be? How
much tension and excitement can
possibly be built before people start
dying from the stress of it all?
FurThe well-known fur protesters PETA
(People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals) say on their website that
“millions of animals are killed for the
clothing industry, all in the name of
fashion.” Not all. Some are killed in
the name of warmth.
Radio & JulietThe dancers gave an incredible per-
formance at the National Opera
House last Friday and Saturday.
Their five-minute standing ovation
was well-deserved.
Long NamesWhen you have a very long name
and/or title, people lose interest.
That’s why when the Ambassador of
the European Animal and Nature
Protection Association Her Royal
Highness Princess Maja von Hohen-
zollern of Germany this week said that... oh forget it.
Falling CranesAnd we don’t mean the birds. A con-
struction crane fell into the Dnipro
near Podil recently, and contaminat-
ed the immediate area with leaked
fuel and lubricant. Kyivites have long
heard about the risks of swimming in
the river, but this is a new one.
Dirty RumoursThere is speculation that the recent
decision by Kyiv authorities to ban
the celebration/commemoration of
the Orange Revolution may be Yanuk-
ovych-inspired. Ridiculous! Why on
earth would he want to stop the people celebrating a revo-
lution that overturned a fraudulent election victory?
Last Saturday I was given three tick-
ets to a ballet at the National Opera
House. It was called Radio & Juliet,
and the magazine covered it by getting the
Romanian choreographer on the infamous
Sofa. From what I’d read, it was the Shake-
speare story of Romeo & Juliet, performed
through ballet, to the music of Radiohead.
Fine, I thought. I need to get some culture in
me, and that sounds suitably random.
I invited two friends along, and we took our
seats at the last-minute, in one of those
Pretty Woman boxes that apparently cost a
lot when you don’t get free tickets. We hadn’t
had time to grab a programme, but it was
Romeo & Juliet, so we all knew the story-
line anyway.
The lights dimmed, the crowd welcomed the
conductor, and we set off. The dancers were
wearing vibrant Latino colours. Juliet was
sexual and flirtatious. I didn’t recognise the
orchestra’s version of whatever Radiohead
songs they played, but I reassured myself
that it would all become clear shortly. It
didn’t. After 15 minutes I still hadn’t recogn-
ised any songs, and assumed they must be
their more obscure compositions. I tried to
work out which one was Romeo. I assumed
it was the guy in green. But then another fel-
low appeared dressed all in white, to a cheer
from the crowd, so I assumed this one must
be Romeo (despite him looking Spanish and
not seeming interested in Juliet, who in turn
was dressed like a gypsy). Then I recognised
something: Toreador, from Bizet’s Carmen.
I thought it was strange, but put it down to
coincidence, interpretation or orchestral li-
cense.
30 minutes passed. Then 40. I turned to my
colleagues and asked which one was Romeo.
They were both in agreement: it was definite-
ly the guy in the green. I was confident the
guy in the green was Mercutio, and that the
guy in the white was Romeo, but they didn’t
believe me, and stuck to their guns.
After an hour, Juliet got into a love tryst and
was stabbed, whereupon it all ended. The
dancers were presented with flowers and
took a thousand bows. The crowd got up
and left. We were puzzled, and felt that it de-
viated somewhat from Shakespeare’s tale,
but agreed that despite the lack of story-line
familiarity or recognisable Radiohead songs,
it had been enjoyable, if somewhat short. We
also agree that we couldn’t feel short-changed
when the tickets had been free.
As we put our coats on, we realised that a
lot of people were staying in their seats. Af-
ter a short conversation, we agreed that it
couldn’t be over, and sat back down. What
was coming next (or even what had just
been), we weren’t sure.
After the interval, we heard Radiohead, saw
something akin to Romeo & Juliet, and were
treated to an absolutely breath-taking per-
formance of modern dance. After it finished,
the crowd picked up their jaws and stood to
acknowledge one of the best shows they’re
likely to see in a long time.
As we got up to leave, my Russian-speaking
companion noticed a discarded programme
on the seat next to us. I picked it up. It read
“A Tale of Two Love Stories – Carmen and Ro-
meo & Juliet.”
Dear Stephen,
I can’t stand my boss. She talks to my colleagues and I as though we are nothing but
minions who belong on some sort of chain gang. I like my job, and I make a decent
salary, but I don’t know how much of this I can take! If we were living in the days of
Soviets I would just have to shut up about it and take it, but this is the 21st century!
We should respect each other! Do you have any advice? – Worried and confused
Dear Worried and Confused,
You do not say what you do, and as such, I’m a little stuck as to how to advise. In gen-
eral terms, there’s a lot to be said for chain gangs (they built some very good roads)
but it all depends on what you do. If, for example, you work in the prison service,
being chained up might be particularly demeaning. If you are an underwater diver,
chains would be equally troublesome. On the whole though, and if circumstance al-
lows, my advice would be to rise up as a team, embrace the unity, grab your spades
and get digging.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen
