Sunday morning, I woke up late and, slipped out of bed, donned my slippers and bathrobe and, as (I am sad to say I do) fi rst thing every
weekend, I wandered out onto my balcony and sparked up a cigarette. It took me ‘til I was half way through the thing before I noticed the clouds of smoke billowing from an apartment window just across from me, and I excuse this with the fact that I’d just woken up and my eyes were still half-closed. As soon as I spotted the smoke, however, they opened fully and the fi rst thing that sprung to mind was: how on earth am I going to fi nd the number for the fi re brigade? Luckily, just as this thought en-tered my clouded mind, a fi re engine pulled up outside the apartment building in question, and fi remen poured from it. They carried a portable fi re hydrant type thing, and some of them started running up and down the road obviously looking for a water main with which to connect it. The ladder was quickly raised to one of the windows of the apartment, and another gang of fi re-fi ghters fl ooded up the stairs of this particular krushchovska. They worked fast, and they worked effi ciently, speaking quickly into walkie-talkies as they scurried about. The lads on the street
found somewhere to attach their portable hydrant, an already-unravelled hose was connected to it, a fi reman quickly scaled the ladder and readied himself to take the pressure of the water as it was turned on. But just as the water was being turned on, a fi reman wearing an oxygen mask appeared in the win-dow through which I’d initially spotted the smoke billowing. He fl ung it open and gave the thumbs up to his colleague on the ladder, and those on the street below. Quickly and effi ciently the fi re had been extinguished. Big sigh of relief, especially, I am sure, for the people who live in the apartment in ques-tion. It was an old couple, who looked like they live life on the borderline. Then a thought struck me, a thought that could only strike you in Ukraine: when is the bribe paid? There was no messing about when these guys turned up. They did not stand about with a we’re-happy-to-let-your-place-burn-un-til-you-cross-our-palms-with-silver demeanour. They got on with it, and they got their job done. Once done, there’s not much chance of extorting a bribe, and the old couple whose apartment it was didn’t look like they could afford to offer more than a few kopeks anyway. Had I just witnessed Ukraine’s only corruption-free civil servants in action? Firemen all over the world do a great job for not a lot of money, and I am sure the fi remen in Ukraine get paid much less than the global norm, and it certainly seemed to me they do their job with bravery and effi ciency, without asking for bribes fi rst. In this country, that’s impressive. Ukraine’s fi re-fi ghters, we salute you!

4 What’s Up
Last week a major furore erupted around an interview by a local newspaper with a government minister. Despite all the allegations of censorship, one thing
that struck us here at What’s On was how badly the minister under the spotlight answered the questions posed to him. It was no surprise to us at all that he didn’t want the story to be published, as he came across as completely corrupt and a complete idiot. Refl ect-ing upon this, we realised that most government ministers in Ukraine, are just that – corrupt im-beciles. But we also came to understand that they’re simply not trained, as most politicians are in the West, on how to deal with diffi cult ques-tions sensibly. We decided to help them out with an idiot’s guide on the art of answering diffi cult questions. After all, despite a highly censored media in which the journalists are just too scared to ask diffi -cult questions, once in a while someone’s going to come along with the courage to ask the ques-tions, and there may still be the odd editor around brave enough to publish the results. So here are some rules on how to cope with those diffi cult questions in the very unlikely event you’re ever asked one. Now, we know all you chaps currently holding governmental positions aren’t the brightest, so we’ve identifi ed an exceptionally simple four-stage approach that even you, with your excep-tionally limited mental capacity, should be able to comprehend and cope with – prepare, identify, avoid, and if all else fails, lie.
1. Preparing for Diffi cult QuestionsIt is helpful to think of the interview as a bat-tle for which you must prepare. Crucially, you must know the basics of the subject-matter on which you may be asked questions. This might mean reading about it, or asking people who know about it. After all, you’re a minister, right? You should at least have a basic understanding of the subject, right? If not, you must acquire
Advice to Ministers:How to Answer Difficult Questions
some level of knowledge regarding the subject matter, as not only will it help you to answer dif-fi cult questions, it’s kind of necessary in order that you do your job. If you’re taking advantage of your position to steal from the good people of the land, make sure you’ve got a plausible cover story, as this will most likely be the area targeted by diffi cult questions. The golden rule is – be prepared.
2. Identifying Difficult QuestionsThe diffi cult thing about a diffi cult question is that it can be asked at any time. And it can look just like any other question. The person asking the question will often not tell you that it is diffi -cult, or warn you in advance that it’s coming. In fact, the art to asking a diffi cult question is the element of surprise. They’re designed to catch you off guard and can often be diffi cult to spot. Diffi cult questions can be identifi ed by consider-ing the following:
Whether the answer is known• Whether the answer is potentially embarrass-• ing or would be an admission of guiltWhether the answer may lead to questions the • answerer would rather not answerWhether the answer could lead to a jail sen-• tence
3. Avoiding the Difficult Question By far the best option when asked a diffi cult question is simply not to answer it. This meth-od is tried and tested throughout the civilised world. Of course it will appear like avoidance, and it will be clear to everyone you simply don’t want to answer the question, but that does not matter. As long as you don’t answer the ques-tion, people will quickly forget it was ever asked. This can be done using one of the following not-so-subtle techniques:
Vague and lofty consideration of the issue(s) • raised, followed (without pause) by the adop-tion and consideration of concepts not dis-
similar to - but not identical to - the concepts raised in the initial question Extended conversation along the lines latterly • adopted aboveExplain the diffi cult question is actually a • non-question or nonsense question, and say it is impossible to answer under the circum-stancesConclude by accusing the opposition of some • similar misdemeanor whether it relates to dif-fi cult question or not, or...Actually accuse the opposition of that which • you are accused
4. Answering Difficult QuestionsIf you are faced with a Jeremy-Paxman-type who simply will not accept one of the above bluster techniques and you fi nd yourself in a position where the question has to be answered, the fol-lowing techniques should be applied:
Lie• Cite statistics that support your lie and give it • credenceImmediately divert the attention of the in-• terviewer away from the diffi cult question by somehow linking it (tenuously or otherwise) with a topic (related or otherwise) that shows you in a good lightDo not give the interviewer the chance to re-• turn to the diffi cult question by continuing to talk about things of which you’re proud, or inventing a premise for cutting the interview short and having the interviewer escorted from the premises (here you can use burly men or a beautiful girl, and we strongly suggest the latter because it’s likely the interviewer won’t even remember the Diffi cult Question by the time he gets to the door).
By sticking to the above guidlines, we at What’s On hope that the mistakes of the recent interview are not repeated, and that ministers and others may interview without fear of looking as ridicu-lous as they actually are.

6 Ukraine Travel
Below, What’s On offers a list - non-exhaustive to be sure, but an ex-cellent starting point – for readers interested in some adventure, per-
haps over the upcoming holidays.
Akkerman Fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskiy (Odeska Oblast)Found in Odesa oblast, this castle has had many different names over the years, given by the many different nations which possessed it. Most translations, however, refer to it as the ‘white fortress’, refl ecting the large num-ber of white seashells that mark the shore upon which the fortress was built, as well as the castle’s numerous limestone buildings. It is uncertain how long the actual fortress has been standing, as the city itself marked its
2500th anniversary in 1998. What is certain is that construction of its high walls and towers began at some point in the 13th century, and the castle has been under the careful watch of Moldovans, Genoese and Turks during its long life. As Ukraine’s most grandiose fortress, it was recognised as an historical architectural landmark in 1896, and having served as the set for many Soviet fi lms of the early 20th cen-tury, it is truly something to behold.
Bar Castle in Bar (Vinnytsa Oblast)Built in 1452, this castle has changed hands a few times in the course of its lifetime, and almost a century after it was built was under the control of the Polish Queen Bona Sphort-sa. Once called ‘The Gates of Polish Ukraine’, the castle was renamed along with the town after a town in the queen’s native duchy in Italy, Bari. In 1636, Hetman Stanislav Ko-netspolskiy moved his residence to Bar and replaced the old fortress, but it would suffer at the hands of Cossack leader Maxym Kryvonis during the Khmelnytskiy Uprising, as well as from the Turks, who took control just 40 years later. It remains in decay to this day.

Whereas 3 000 of these feudal defensive outposts once protected Ukraine’s various regions and their peoples, a mere 116 remain. once protected Ukraine’s various regions and their peoples, a mere 116 remain. Still, for those inclined towards chivalric romances, Still, for those inclined towards chivalric romances, or for those more attuned to the cold, hard and often or for those more attuned to the cold, hard and often cruel facts of military history, castle fans will find no cruel facts of military history, castle fans will find no shortage in Ukraine. The attrition of Ukraine’s castles shortage in Ukraine. The attrition of Ukraine’s castles should be on the wane, should be on the wane, as UNESCO and national as UNESCO and national recognition of some of recognition of some of these historical sites as these historical sites as worthy of protection may worthy of protection may help to stem the tide of oft-help to stem the tide of oft-destructive “progress.” destructive “progress.”
Berezhany Castle in Berezhany (Zhytomyrska Oblast)Designed by the French and built by the Ital-ians, this castle built in the 1530s and 40s has hosted Polish magnates, kings and even Peter the Great! Built in a deep swampy river valley, it was so well fortifi ed that neither Khmelnits-kiy’s Cossacks, nor the Turks succeeded in taking it, yet it was transferred among noble families throughout its entire lifetime. Dam-aged by WWI military action, it has been said that the Soviets deliberately aimed to destroy it at the end of WWI. Although it is not much more than a shadow of its former self, the ruins cannot hide the former architectural beauty it once was.
Berdychiv Castle in Berdychiv (Ternopilska Oblast)Beginning in 1320, this small town belonged to the estate of a Polish noble family. Having suffered at the hands of prior Mongol and Ta-tar invasions, fortifi cations of the town allowed it to prosper. While enemies found it very diffi -cult to breach the walls, stories tell of one of the male members of the family, kidnapped by the Tatars in 1626. When he returned from cap-tivity, he founded a monastery which he then donated to the monks of the mendicant Order of the Barefoot Carmelites. In 1648, religious tensions between the Сatholic monastery and the general Orthodox population, paved the way for Bohdan Khmelnitskiy’s siege of the castle. Considerable sums of money were do-nated by the Vatican for its renovation, and while WWII would also infl ict its wrath on the long-suffering structure, it has since become a centre of cultural life, immortalised forever by the memoirs of Honore de Balzac.

THE ATTRITION OF UKRAINE’S CASTLES SHOULD BE ON THE WANE, AS UNESCO AND NATIONAL RECOGNITION OF SOME OF THESE HISTORICAL SITES AS WORTHY OF PROTECTION MAY HELP TO STEM THE TIDE OF OFT-DESTRUCTIVE “PROGRESS.”
Dubno Castle in Dubno (Rivnenska Oblast)Dubno Castle, which overlooks the Ikva River, was founded in 1492 by Lithuanian Prince Konstantin Ostrogski. Reconstructed and re-fortifi ed several times, it boasted an impres-sive array of cannons, as well as a treasure trove that was thought to have garnered the interest of the Tatars more than once. As with most fortresses in the country, the castle itself - as well as its surrounding area - was often faced with heavy fi ghting in the days of Het-man Khmelnytskiy (descriptions of which can be found in “Taras Bulba” by Nikolai Gogol). WWI was also unkind to Dubno Castle and, retaken by Poland, it was transformed into a military garrison, only later to be used for even more sinister purposes, as an NKVD prison and site of hundreds, if not thousands of ex-ecutions during WWII.
Chufut Kale Fortress near Bakhchisaray (Crimea)This bastion was historically one of the centres of the Crimean Karaite community, the name of which is Turkish for “Jewish fortress”, or “Place of Forty”, as it was known in the Middle Ages. While no one really knows when the city was founded, experts believe that its remains go back to the fi fth or sixth century, when it was founded by tribes of Iranian descent. Lit-tle recorded history has come down to us from the period between its founding and Mongol-Tatar invasions of the 13th century, when the cave town was taken and became the centre of a small feudal principality. It remained as such until the mid-17th century, when its sig-nifi cance as a stronghold decreased, as neigh-bouring Bakhchisaray began to fl ourish. By the mid-19th century, it was completely aban-doned. However, there still exist the remains of caves cut into the cliffs, the ruins of a mosque, a mausoleum (from 1437) and two Karaite cenotaphs.
The Genoese Fortress in Sudak (Crimea)The city of Sudak is believed to have been founded in 212 AD by the same Alan settlers who were instrumental in the settlement of the Chufut Kale area. By the 6th century, the Eastern Roman Emperor had ordered that a fortress be constructed. From then until the 12th century when the Genoese took control,
it was dominated by the Khazars, the Byz-antine Empire and the Tatars. By 1380, they generally controlled the whole Crimean Black Sea Coast between them. Sudak remained a vital stronghold, in light of its command of the trade routes. Some say that the size, position and strength of the fortress that stood here is, to some extent, a measure of the sense of inse-curity felt by the Genoese. Built on a hill 150m above sea level, it was easy to keep watch on the surrounding area, but it was not suffi cient to stave off the Ottoman Turkish invasion. Not only did they lose control of the area (never to regain it), but the lucrative trade in slaves and
spices also disappeared. The fortress also fell into disuse until the 18th century, when Im-perial Russia gained control, turning it into a garrison. It has since been restored to its origi-nal beauty and is open to the public.
Kamianets-Podilskiy Castle in Kamianets-Podilskiy (Khmelnytska Oblast)The name of this castle comes from the word rock in most Slavic languages and that’s ex-actly what it looks like, sitting atop a large elevated peninsula. With historical accounts dating back to the mid-14th century, and con-trol exercised by the Polish-Lithuanian Com-monwealth, the fortress played a major role in seeing off attacks from Cossack, Ottoman and Tatar forces, and while none were ever suc-
cessful, the castle was not immune to damage. The forces in possession of the castle changed often, until the city’s leaders surrendered to the Ottomans near the end of the 17th cen-tury. Beginning in the 18th century, and with the return of Polish control, the fortress was used more as a prison than a military fortifi ca-tion, and would remain such until 1928, when it was declared a historical cultural preserve by the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1989, it became a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and remains a must-see.
Khotyn Fortress in Khotyn (Chernivetska Oblast)Found on the shores of the Dniester River, this area was very important for trade and, therefore, required some sort of border forti-fi cation. Construction started in the Kyivan Rus period of Ukrainian history, in the 10th century. Throughout the years, however, the castle expanded signifi cantly, with the 13th century perhaps most prominent, with adap-tations the Genoese, Moldovan Prince Dragos and Stephen the Great of Hungary playing the most key roles. The year 1621 saw the Battle of Khotyn, where Ukrainian Hetman Petro Sahaidachniy and others held off the Turkish sultan, and in 1650, Bohdan Khmelnytskiy himself occupied the fortress, until various battles and peace treaties dictated new foreign occupants. Today, however, it is an architec-tural preserve and the fount of many legends.
Kremenets Castle in Kremenets (Ternopilska Oblast)Some maintain that this fortress’ fi rst foun-dations were laid in the 8th and 9th centu-ries. However, the fi rst written references are found in 1064, and even then people knew little about it, until 1240 when the Mongols tried and failed to capture it. Having received yet another castle as a gift from her husband, Polish Queen Bona Sphortsa improved and enhanced the structure immensely. Ultimate-ly though, she abandoned it, as she had Bar Castle, to return to her native Italy after her husband’s death. For years it stood without a ruler, until the 17th century, when brutal battles between the Cossacks and the Polish Army ensued. Today, its ruins stand tall and proud, and legend has it that if you happen to be around at Easter, you may ever catch sight of Queen Bona Sphortsa.

AdaptationAdaptationExhibition of paintings by Anton LogovYa Gallery (Khoryva 49b)From 28 AprilAnton Logov is an artist constantly working with the subject and means of expression of new abstractionsm. In his exhibition, Adapta-tion, Logov appeals to the “avant-garde icon” – the black square - and presents his numer-ous adaptations on it in the art of the 21st cen-tury. On his canvas the black square becomes just an element entering into a subtle dialogue with Logov’s own abstraction. The result of these esthetic and philosophic experiments is Logov’s golden black square – the absolute “nothing”, in its beauty and mystery. For more information call: 492-9203

At Azure, ladies inclined towards letting their hair down, as choice male dancers let their trousers down, are offered a chance to throw off the burdens of the work week and – in the spirit of equality with their male peers – drag themselves in to work on Friday, horribly hung-over.Admission for ladies is free, 100hrv for men. Fedde le Grandthe Man Who Turns the TablesA fantastic electronic music event Sensation White is about to come to Kyiv and What’s On couldn’t pass up the chance to talk to one of the headliners of this show, which is guaranteed to impress clubbers with its scale, DJ sets, lightshow and design, but also with the kind of amazing atmosphere previously found only on Ibiza or in Brazil’s Green Valley, but now set to conquer the Ukrainian public.
Beginning our talk about the upcoming show and shows in general, we ask Fedde le Grand, a Dutch DJ, whose career skyrocketed a couple of years ago, to pick one especially memorable show. “It’s hard to pick out just one gig, be-
cause there have been so many great ones that I’ve played at,” Fedde explains. “All the Sensation parties obviously stand out; those are just on a different scale to anything else and I’m really proud that they keep asking me back to play. But I guess as far as clubs go, one of the most stand-out gigs for me has been at Green Valley in Brazil – the place really is a super-club. There’s a fantastic atmosphere; it’s half inside and half outside, thousands of people just letting loose, the DJ booth is right in the thick of it, the production that they put on is world class.” It’s not surprising that the DJ picked the Brazil gig, as the country itself is famous for its magnificent celebrations, carnivals and, as electronic music grew in popularity, the country quickly put the DJ’s events on the national party calendar. One of the interesting things about the music the DJs play is that it’s based on a rhythm produced by the oldest instrument on the planet – drums. Nevertheless, the music has become hugely popular over the last decade and its popularity is only growing. Com-menting on this Fedde says, “A whole culture has grown around that, and with different types of dance music there are different kinds of sub-cultures – drum & bass, dubstep, house, trance, hard house, deep house, electro, techno – they’re all like their own worlds that have developed around the sounds.” The rise in the popularity of electronic music is easy to follow. From dark clubs and tiny stages, DJs have moved on to conquer stadiums, to the extent that it’s now quite common to see DJs playing open-air festivals after rock bands or even putting together their own festivals of electronic music, like Sensation, even bigger in scale than conventional music fests. Ex-panding on this and shedding further light on the topic, Fedde of-fers, “There’s such a huge amount of crossover right now between more commercial forms of music and our world that DJs are playing at major events, huge festivals that usually focus on more live or
band elements - places that weren’t necessarily open to us before. This month I’m playing at the Coachella Festival in LA, which is pri-marily a live music festival, but now they’re introducing a small, se-lect number of DJs and producers to perform there, because there’s a demand and a knowledge of who we are and what we do. And look at Deadmau5 – he DJ’d at the Grammys!”
The Growth of Electronic MusicOne could be forgiven for thinking that electronic music will totally replace live music very soon. The demand for it grows daily and de-velopments in technology allow DJs to create new and interesting electronic styles. Fedde, however, has his own take on this: “No, not at all. There are lots of different kinds of people, who have many dif-ferent tastes in music. Some people who love heavy metal might not like what I do, and some people who love dance music might think that heavy metal is the worst thing in the world. As long as there are different instruments, different cultures, different influences and different tastes, there will always be many forms of music, from live to electronic and, in some cases, a crossover. Producers, sing-ers, artists, DJs – we’re all creative people looking for outlets for our ideas and that will never change, whatever technology occurs along the way.” Part of the reason for the popularity of electronic music is the parties featuring it. Live music has always been closely associat-ed with concerts, whereas club music was created for parties. In the course of its development, lights and dancers were incorporated and the set design in the clubs grew ever more ambitious. DJ Fedde la Grande has played many concerts and it seems likely that he knows the recipe for turning an ordinary DJ set into a memorable party and show. He starts with the essential elements: “You have to put your-self in the shoes of the clubbers on the dance floor. I also think that to rely too heavily on special effects is dangerous – you can have as many amazing things going on around the dance floor but if the mu-sic isn’t working, then none of that matters.” Feeling the audience is

answer underlines the fact that the future is today’s most vexing question: “I wish I knew! I’d be very
rich if I did!” the DJ smiles and continues, “I do think that there’ll be even more crossover
between commercial music and electronic music, but I also think we might see a re-
turn to real underground dance music that’s aimed solely at the dance floor
and not marketed towards making it big in the charts. Apart from that,
who knows what new technology will be created, what tools will be available, what they’ll come up with next. What I do think is that it’ll be very exciting and I’m definitely looking forward to it.”In conclusion, I ask Fedde le
Grand what he expects to see at Sensation White this year.
He pauses before answering, selecting his words carefully: “I’m really looking forward to it,
and because I’ve done so many Sensations of course I know
just how good the event will be. It’s really going
to blow the minds of everyone who at-
tends”.
THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT GENRES OF

what Fedde is talking here about, and this is the most important part of the show. Every experienced DJ should know who his public is and what people want to hear/see during his set. It’s not always good when the music is lost behind vivid lights, huge decorations and energetic dancers. He adds, “Some of the greatest ever parties had no huge scale production, no live shows, just a guy with some tunes tearing it up until it left people in bits. If you can do that to the crowd with just your music, then that’s probably the biggest ‘wow’ factor of all.”
A Peek into the Future?Taking to this professional DJ famous for his cooperation with many eminent stars such as Tiesto, Green Velvet, Running with Sultan & Ned Shepard makes me suspect that he can predict the future development of musical industry. Unfortunately, his

rives after a little delay and, having changed, he looks almost the same as all of the others – in a thin t-shirt and baggy sweatpants. Aware of his mastery, I am a little nervous about ask-ing him to teach me – one who knows noth-ing at all about hip-hop dancing – a few ba-sic moves. Buddha, however, gives me a wide and charming smile and gets right down to teaching. Vocalising the beat of the music, he demonstrates the basic one-step move, which is basically stepping and weaving back and forth. The basic two-step is the same, but twice as fast. I manage to catch the beat and note that the moves are very natural and simple. Then Buddha adds a jazz step, known as pas de bourée (sometimes written as pade-bure), and this is where I came unstuck, try-ing to combine the swaying with the back side-step – and all to a rapid hip-hop beat! Having had enough and in order to avoid further embarrassment, I stop here and instead use the opportunity to chat with Buddha Stretch. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and his father was a dancer, who taught Stretch dis-cipline and inspiration, providing support for his son’s dancing career. Today, Buddha Stretch is a famous choreographer, dancer and teacher, dancing Freestyle Hip-Hop drawn from all aspects of the hip-hop culture. Aware of his background, I ask Buddha to defi ne hip-
hop culture and I get a very simple and explicit answer: “Hip-hop culture is music, art, dance and poetry from the ghetto or urban areas of America and New York city, where it started. For me it’s something that I grew up with. Hip-hop culture is a minority culture of black and Latino kids in America, who did not have the resources. We did not have money for music classes, dance or art schools, so we created our own culture through trying and adapting what we naturally did, and we built it up from that. That is what hip-hop is about.”
Global Hip-HopWatching all these young people who came to see the hip-hop star and learn from him I can-not but ask: how did it happen that a minority culture went world-wide? Buddha Stretch sees the popularity of hip-hop in its universal idea: “Hip-hop culture took cuts from multiple cul-tures and melted it into something new. That is why it resonates with other countries – it’s a global phenomenon now, because everybody can relate, can connect to it. It’s like the internet before the internet!” At the same time, hip-hop dancing in particular leaves space for personal interpretation, so we can say each individual dances his own hip-hop. In fact, hip-hop danc-ing includes a number of dancing styles – pop-ping, locking and freestyle, for instance, but
To explore the very core of Ukrainian hip-hop culture, I visit a master classes conducted by one the world’s most famous hip-hop dancers – in
this case, by Buddha Stretch, who, inciden-tally, created the moves for no less than Ma-riah Carey. He came to Kyiv after having vis-ited 7 other cities and with 7 more ahead. The price for the master class is a symbolic 100 hrv, though the experience and knowledge one gets is priceless.
Getting in the GrooveStarting at 6 p.m., young Ukrainian hip-hop dancers start gathering at one of the dance schools in Kyiv. Looking pretty ordinary when they come in, they look quite different once they’ve changed. Sporting baggy t-shirts, loose trousers, some interesting accessories like wristbands and bandanas, when the partici-pants come out of the changing rooms, even their gait changes, becoming more relaxed and swinging. The music comes on and all of them – around 100 people - start dancing, each with their own style, with their own hip-hop, in fact. I see boys of barely 10-11 years, as well as guys and girls probably closer to 30 years old. Most of them know each other so it seems just like a big group of friends have got together here to have fun. Buddha Stretch ar-

the choreographer Stretch doesn’t see any one of them as superior to the others: it’s the dancer himself who chooses the style and pres-ents it. “The most important thing is what I just showed you – the basic two-step. That teaches you how to keep time in music. Often people think that tricks, spins and fl ashy stuff is what it is, but it’s your connection to the music what matters, because the music is what drives the dance,” says Buddha. The music also provides people entry into the culture, as I see no other way for Ukrainians to follow hip-hop culture, if not for the mu-sic. Having travelled around Ukrainian cities and towns giving master classes, the dancer has already drawn some conclusions about Ukrainian hip-hoppers, so he points out oth-er points of contact between the cultures: “I already see Ukrainian youth have embraced the hip-hop culture, they are actually living it. The culture is more than just the dance – it’s the fashion, we call it “swagger” – how you carry yourself. Hip-hop is something you attach to your culture, and you express it through your own individual style: kids in Ukraine are doing just that. The culture can only grow through the exchange of energy and ideas, and so far I’m impressed by the enthusiasm I’ve experienced here and that gives me energy.”
Ukraine Goes Hip-HopIn my meeting with Andriy Gulakov, the head of the Ukrainian hip-hop movement, he tells me that Ukraine is fl ooded with hip-hop at the moment, as preparations for the Ukrainian Hip-Hop Dance Championship are now in full steam. The Championship itself will take place in Kyiv on 29 April – 1 May and will be held ac-cording to the uniform rules of the Hip-Hop International. The candidates will compete in three age categories for the group stages: Ju-niors (7-11 years old), Varsity (12-17 years old) and Adults (18 and over). The competition also includes individual battles in 1x1 and 3x3 for-mats. Andriy Gulakov is sure the Ukrainian team will represent the country well, as our dancers have already won several international dance awards in hip-hop. Remember that Ukraine was behind the Iron Curtain for 70 years, with no access to world tendencies. It was not until the late 1980s that the USSR learned of break-dance (one of the branches of hip-hop culture) which began in the States. Andriy Gulakov was a youngster himself then and he recalls that it was not a massive phenomenon, but that some “ad-vanced” guys would lay a piece of linoleum in the courtyard and practice some moves. The real discovery of hip-hop culture in Ukraine
happened only after the Soviet Union col-lapsed: “The cool guys were the ones with ac-cess to Western videos and who could listen to western music,” says Andriy. Hip-hop dance culture only really kicked off here only in the late 90s, as young people learned more about styles of dance, popular in the U.S. A new cycle in the development of hip-hop culture became possible thanks to fi t-ness conventions, which have been promoting hip-hop dancing since 2002. It was then that the fi rst American hip-hop dancers visited Ukraine, demonstrating their skills and teach-ing Ukrainian hip-hoppers. Andriy himself took an interest in hip-hop culture in 1996, and later, in 2000, he started dancing hip-hop professionally. He has his own explanation for the attraction of hip-hop culture for young peo-ple: “The main idea of hip-hop is struggling for equal rights and freedom of speech; these ideas are constants in hip-hop music, poetry and dancing. Maybe it is the feeling of freedom hip-hop gives that attracts young people all over the world,” says Gulakov. With Ukraine’s eternal longing for freedom, it seems natural enough there are so many Ukrainian hip-hoppers. If we add here the country’s talent, we’ve got every reason to hope that this year’s World’s Hip-Hop Championship will be pleasantly surprised by Ukrainian hip-hop.

A Story to TellThe lives of celebrities have always been a point of great interest for “ordinary” people. Celebrity worship leads people to establish fan clubs, museums and even restaurants. Story Cafe may be the only place in Kyiv so dedicated to stargazing - so much that it’s devoted its theme to celebrity.
Having been invited to have lunch, my friend and I decided to pay Story Cafe a visit on Saturday afternoon. Surpris-ingly, we didn’t fi nd many people there at noon. However, that’s exactly how we wanted it, putting ourselves in the
shoes of celebrities exhausted by 24-hour attention and assaulted by the staring of total strangers.
The Road to the Kingdom of the StarsA short walk from Kontraktova or Poshtova Ploshcha metro will take you to Naberezhno–Khreshchatytska Street where the restaurant is situated. Keep in mind that even though the restaurant is located near downtown, if you decide to have an after-work dinner and take your car there, you’ll probably end up stuck in traffi c, since the street is very busy in the evening hours. In any case, whatever route you take, you won’t have any trouble fi nding the restaurant, thanks to the huge logo hanging above the entrance. As usual, my co-diner was a little late (ap-
proximately 1 hour), so I had plenty of time to take a look around the premises. I was really impressed how the loud and hectic atmosphere of the city outside melted away into absolute peace and comfort upon when entering the reception area. A pretty lady welcomed me and, af-ter taking my coat to the cloakroom, accompanied me to the table I’d booked. The restaurant has 4 rooms, 3 of which are to delight your gas-tronomic senses, while the other is guaranteed to please the eye. The latter is the Museum of Stars, which houses a collection of items do-nated by Ukrainian celebrities. One can also book a banquet here and celebrate the event, with the light refl ected from the stars only adding to the occasion. There is also a non-smoking dining room and two for smokers. The room in which my table is found is called the Star Al-ley hall. A strange name for a dining room, with the numerous picture frames festooned with painted white stars only adding to the mystery. We were later told that voting is underway even at this very moment, to select the Ukrainian celebrities whose photos will grace these frames

until the end of time. Only 10 stars will be so honoured in this truly Ukrainian version of Star Alley. The contest is described on the res-taurant’s website, so everyone has a chance to vote for their personal favourites. The overall design of the restaurant is of the high-tech genre, with large red and white glass squares hanging on white brick walls, a wooden fl oor and wooden furniture, dis-tressed in shabby-chic style. All of these retro items are refl ected in the mirrored ceiling that gives the room the illusion of extra space. In addition, the big round lampshades and soft leather couches create a homely feeling and really help one to feel comfortable. Given Sto-ry Café’s celebrity focus, it’s not surprising to fi nd photos of faces famous the world over decorating the walls. On one wall, there is a large photo of paparazzi with their cameras, while the opposite wall depicts photo cover-age of a red carpet event. The diner sits in the middle of this visual joke.
The Ambrosia of Story CaféThe fi rst thing that stands out of the crowd is the tabloid design of the menu and its size. Chef Serhiy Safronov has done a great job here, managing to create a harmonious mix of French, Italian and Japanese cuisines in such a way that they don’t clash but, on the

contrary, offer the diner more choice in “build-ing” the perfect meal to one’s personal taste. Now we come to the divine dishes served at the restaurant. When my friend finally ar-rived, I decided to give her the responsibility of choosing the starters. Thus, we ended up ordering Seviche Mixto Seafood Salad and Salad with Tiger Shrimps, Arugula and Frize Lettuce with Balsamic Dressing. The salads were outstandingly tasty and the ingredients were in good proportion. Still, I should ad-mit that there was rather a lot of cucumber in my Seviche Mixto Seafood Salad, which looked somewhat out of place and brought to mind the adage that more isn’t necessar-ily better. It's all a matter of balance, but we
can live with that, as the starters did a great job in enhancing our appetite.Starting our fi rst course with Cream of Champignon soup served in an unusually big plate, the fi rst thing we noticed was the stun-ning aroma of the dish. We quickly fi nished our soups and anticipated the main course. Among the wide variety of dishes including Foie Gras, Peking Duck, Veal on the Bone and many others, we decided to try the Filet Mignon with French Fries and Salmon served with Creamy Rice and Asparagus. To add some special fl avour to the meat and fi sh, we also asked our server to bring us two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc (Spy Valley) wine. The wine had a delightful nose, suiting the main course perfectly. The mignon I had that day was served with a truffl e sauce that underlined the taste of the meat with its sweetish taste. Finally, as a fi tting end to our story about food of the gods, we ordered heavenly and tender Macarons Framboise for dessert. In keeping with the menu’s encouragement of culinary cultural cross-over, my friend decided to add a cup of Japanese Sencha tea to her tasty French dessert. The dessert was the perfect ending for our meal. The restaurant spins a fi ne tale, provid-ing insight into the hidden life of celebrities away from the cameras and we left Story Café with a desire to share the story with others.

Diffi cult Questions for the LionsLUCKY PUB The Kyiv Lions hosted their second charitable pub quiz on Thursday 21 April, and a good crowd turned out to have fun, answer some tough questions set by Anthony Nichol, and, of course, raise money for charity. There were some great prizes to win, donated by the sponsors of the night, and this made for a competitive evening. But there could only be one winning team at the end of the night, and that was Gnasher and Dennis which consisted mostly of What’s On staff, proving we’re very smart people here! Winning or losing, everyone had a great time, and we’re all hoping there will be another pub quiz soon!

Chornobyl. Life Goes OnKYIV MUSEUM OF MODERN ART A special photo exhibition was launched in this art gallery on 19 April, dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Chornobyl. The series of documentary photos by Lyuba Markevych were taken during her trips to the nearby town of Prypyat in 2005 and 2008 and highlight the aftermath of the accident. Lyuba also wants to raise awareness of this tragic event in the US, and once the exhibit closes in Kyiv, it will go on display in Chicago.
Italian Art Comes to Ukraine. M17 M17 is becoming a very popular gallery in Kyiv, and that’s all down to the quality of the exhibitions it hosts. The most recent, The Italian Transavantgarde, is a collection of works by legendary European artists of the late 70s such as Sandro Chia, Enzo Kukk, Nicola De Maria, Francesco Clemente, and Mimmo Paladino. The exhibition, put together by the famous Italian curator Achille Bonito Oliva, will run until 15 June and is defi nitely worth a look!

Nordic and International NetworkingSHOOTERS CAFÉ The Nordic Business Network teamed up with those nice Internations people for a special networking event on Wednesday 20 April in this new extension of Shooters. The place was packed with interesting people, all of whom took part in a special business card lottery that resulted in some lucky ones winning some special prizes. There was also a charity aspect to the night, as everyone present donated generously to a project for homeless children in Ukraine, and this generous aspect of the night culminated in the auction of some very interesting Swedish-made IQ testing puzzles. and winning accolades for my work. That was really my launch pad,” says Jannet, ethusiastically. When I ask Jannet whether a successful career in fashion design had always been her dream, she replies, “It was my dream, yes, but it hasn’t yet come true. You see, I’m really just a beginner, just starting out.” Perhaps noticing my expression of incredulity, she continues, “I need to devote more effort and time to the job I do, to show my natural talent. I’m not there yet, but I’m on my way,” she states with a smile. She goes on to say that her dream feels close to fruition when she knows that she has delighted a customer with one of her designs. “At heart, I don’t quite feel like a fashion designer; I’m just so interested in what people want to wear and in helping them to fi nd what they’re looking for in the world of fashion.”
Comfortable in Cosmopolitan KyivComfortable in Cosmopolitan Kyiv“When I look at Kyiv today, comparing it to what it looked like fi fteen years ago, I’m amazed by the changes.” Perhaps so, but – if Jannet von Klingen has anything to do with it – Kyiv’s star is set to rise still further. “I want Kyiv to be among the top capital cities in Europe and the world. I’ve travelled far and wide, to many other cosmopolitan capital cities, but Kyiv is the city where I would always like to live.I ask Jannet about her plans for the future and she mentions an upcoming collection for April, as well as a competition to be held by Elite Models to design a special evening costume for their models. All of this sounds very promising, so I ask her whether she feels she’s expe-riencing the best her career has to offer her. She demurs: “My best moment hasn’t come. I have had a series of good moments, but the best hasn’t oc-curred yet. I believe it’s still to come.
A Fashionable Optimist and Dreamer
“I was born into a family of scientists,” Jannet offers by way of in-troduction. “I come from a privileged family, of royal descent, through my father’s heritage as a son of the noble von Klingen line. My mother is Italian and my father is a German born in
Prague, the present capital of the Czech Republic.”
Finding Her Way Finding Her Way to the Fashion Industryto the Fashion Industry “My becoming a fashion designer was really a matter of destiny, as my fam-ily is of a scientifi c bent.” While her parents believed that she would likely follow in their footsteps into the sciences, fate took a hand and led her down a different path. “At an early age, I developed a love for art and design, but it was far from out in the open. It was more like a game of hide-and-seek.” Although, it wasn’t visible and pronounced; it still had startling effects. One day, indulging her penchant for design, Jannet was late coming home, leading her worried parents to voice their suspicions that she was up to no good. Rumbled, she confessed all. Perhaps to her surprise, they were able to reach a compromise, agreeing with her that she would sit two entrance examinations: one for the science institute and one for the Institute of Tech-nology and Fashion Design. “Luckily, I passed both with fl ying colours, but they allowed me to follow my preferred fi eld of study. I chose the Institute of Fashion Design,” she says.
A Dream BegunA Dream BegunEnsconced in the Institute of Fashion Design, von Klingen wasted no time in making her mark. “I made the most of the opportunities that came my way during my second year at university, when a tidal wave of ideas suddenly fl ooded my brain. I began designing costumes for musicians and dancers
