Monday 24th May - 6th June <Monday 18th - Sunday 31st October Brown nose browne? I don’t think so! So Browne’s review is finally out and as suspected, students are likely to see an abominable rise in tuition fees if all goes ahead. The cuts being made to higher education could reach around 40% and despite it being the last thing they want to do, Universities will be forced to up their fees in a bid to continue being able to function. Making students pay more just because we choose to try and better ourselves and learn a little about the big wide world instead of sitting on our behinds is grossly unfair, and will only increase the amount of people who are put off going to University – but hey, who needs doctors and nurses anyway? Pfft... However, there is good news. Since the final decision won’t be made till Christmas/New Year time there is plenty of things we can do as students to put pressure on the coalition Government in the meantime to ensure they think wisely before simply following Browne’s advice. The NUS and UCU have joined forces and on November the 10 th , thousands of staff and student members will meet to march through the streets of London in a protest, showing those in power that Winchester Students won’t be fobbed off! Back in 2006 the NUS ran a similar campaign in regards to tuition fees, pleading to put a freeze on the price of tuition fees then which was about £1000 per year. Now while I realise this wasn’t successful, otherwise you guys wouldn’t be paying about £2000 on top of this like you do, it was extremely close. Closer in fact than the Government’s decision surrounding the involvement with Iraq, with students only losing by 5 seats and Tony Blair even admitting that if we’d of won, he would have stood down. But it’s this tried and tested method that gives us hope in being triumphant this time. Before the general elections all 57 of the Lib Dems in parliament signed a pledge to say they would back a freeze on the current capped tuition fees and this is where a coalition Government has its advantage – basically, if all 57 stay true to their word then despite outnumbering them in bodies, the Conservatory party can do jack all about it. Someone once said “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have“ so get in touch, book your spot on the coach and show Government who they’re messin’ with. Brown nose browne?

The NUS and UCU have joined forces and on November the 10th, thousands of staff and student members will meet to march through the streets of London in a protest, showing those in power that Winchester Students won’t be fobbed off!

I’m often asked ‘what is the scariest film you’ve ever seen’? To be honest that’s a pretty tricky question but some of the films below would definitely make the list. So to celebrate the bloodcurdling Halloween season, why not zombie shuffle down to the Vault for the day on 30th Oct, and treat your goosebumps and scream

muscles to a workout...

12pm - I Walked with a Zombie(1943): Martial Rose Library Film club’s film of the Month. A masterclass of subtle chills and quiet malice.

2pm - Ghost Watch (1990): BBC’s remarkable drama shown at Halloween in 1990. It was so realistic it was rightly compared to Orson Welles’ War of the World broadcast.

4pm - The Fourth Kind (2009): A terrifying dramatisation of unexplained disappearances in the remote town of Nome, Alaska. Is a malign extra-terrestrial force at work?

6pm - The Thing (1982): John Carpenter’s update of the 50’s classic, ‘The Thing from Another World’ is nerve shredding! One of the most tense and claustrophobic films I’ve ever seen.

8pm - Paranormal Activity (2007): Big budgets don’t always mean the best scares as this ‘mocumentary’ proves. Hugely successful at the box office and particularly effective at giving you the heebyjeebys...

10pm - A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010): Perhaps not better than the original, this slick remake is nether the less every bit as good. Abandoning the shadows and slow reveal of the 80’s version, this new films shoves Freddy's five clawed fingers down your throat from the word go—literally :)

Another great fortnight for films: Sunday the 24th of October’s 9.30pm film is the ridiculously fun, swords & sandals romp, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Following the exploits of the gravity & time defying titular character, the film is a big bang adaptation of the popular console game series from the producer of Pirates of the Caribbean. The film is expensive and slick looking and is a great popcorn crowd pleaser, but there’s not much going on behind the scenes of this film. Seriously dumb fun.

Whilst the main film is great, The 7pm film in my opinion, is far Superior! Who would have thought that a 40 year old Walt Disney World ride would prove to be the basis for such a fantastic film as Pirates of the Caribbean. I suspect most people have seen Pirates at least once by now (if you haven’t where have you been for the last 7 years?), but even if you have it’s still well worth watching again… Iron Man (7pm) & Iron Man 2 (9pm) are quite frankly superb. Yes I’m probably a bit biased, being a rabid superhero movie junkie, but even the most hard bitten cinephile would probably agree with me. The first film charts the rise of billionaire Tony Stark’s (a note perfect performance by Robert Downey Jr) iron clad superhero . The sequel is more of the same with a scene stealing turn by Mickey Rouke as power suit enhanced villain, Whiplash. Both films are truly spectacular with credible effects, engaging performances and nail biting action sequences. Well worth popping down to the Vault for. And if the regular Sunday films aren’t enough to sate your big screen cravings then we’ve got good news for you. On Monday 18th the Vault will be hosting a Firefly Marathon with all 14 amazing episodes of Joss Wheadon’s space adventure followed by the Feature film finale of the series, Serenity (voted the best film of 2005 by viewers of BBC’s Film2005). Plus films for PLAYmates week on Tuesday 19th...
