CulturalOlympiad–ArtatthemodernOlympics7.45 – 9.15pm/Linbury RoomSeries of 4 lectures £35 (£27 Friends)Single lectures £10 (£8 Friends)Bar beforehand and in the intervalThis second series of lectures celebrating the 2012 London Olympics features some of the cities which have hosted the games since the Second World War, culminating in the contemporary art scene of London in 2012

All the speakers lecture extensively for Tate Britain, Tate Modern, throughout Britain and internationally

TheAusterityOlympics:London1948

Tuesday 5 June The first games after the Second World War marked the culmination of a period in which art too had concentrated on war, with images such as Henry Moore’s powerful Shelter Drawings. The seeds of change were in place though, with the founding of the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1947, leading to the 1956 exhibition This is Tomorrow, which brought a glimpse of the shift from austerity to prosperityLecturer: Rosalind Whyte

PoorArt:Rome1960

Tuesday 12 JuneAt the time of the Rome Olympics the Italian art scene was one of the most radical and exciting in Europe. A group of artists attempted to break down the distinction between ‘art’ and ‘life’ by developing what later came to be called Arte Povera (poor art). They used everyday materials, such as waste rags or cheap wood, and made startling juxtapositions between apparently unconnected objectsLecturer: Peter Scott

ArtandAngstinPost-warGermany:Munich1972

Tuesday 26 JuneBarely a generation after the 1936 Berlin Olympics a divided Germany hosted the Munich games; keen to escape the spectre of the Second World War instead terrorism cast its shadow over the event. From these provocative times came provocative art. The profoundly influential Joseph Beuys produced strange and haunting work which defied boundaries and questioned the role of the artistLecturer: Alan Reid

Up,DownandAround;InvolvingtheViewer:London2012

Tuesday 3 JulyThe final talk in the series brings us right up to date and back to London. In the UK since the late 90s there has been a huge growth in the role of public art, with the viewer having a greater involvement. Projects and exhibitions such as the Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth, Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall commissions and Antony Gormley’s Event Horizon have brought contemporary art to a wider audienceLecturer: Melanie Paice
