Paws, Claws & Doors: My name is Nigel, I grew up with many animals. We have approx 2 acres of land, stock fenced into smaller paddocks and an area of lawn which is securely fenced. There are several paths across elds where we can walk away from any trac, but we are happy to walk their normal routes, etc if housesitting or daily visits. All small animals can be housed in one of our hutches or their own if preferred. I have been doing this for quite a few years but having been made redundant decided to enlarge on my passion.

Professional Dog Grooming at K9 Beauty: All your dogs’ grooming needs are catered for, from a nail trim to a full groom. The fully equipped salon provides a safe, relaxed environment where your pooch will be pampered to perfection. I am passionate about my profession and proud to be City & Guilds qualied with over 15 years experience in the grooming industry. My aim is to spread awareness, along with a wonderful group of people, the truth behind the dog and cat

meat trade in South East Asia. A coalition has been formed – NOTODOGMEAT, a not for prot organisation. I have three dogs of my own, they’re loyal, kind, they give you their heart, the purest of souls, a true bond of friendship. Within the dog and cat meat trade this friendship is betrayed in the most heinous way imaginable. In South East Asia, the belief is, the more adrenalin produced before the animal is eaten, the more health benets the meat has and the better the dog or cat meat tastes. They endure hours of prolonged torture themselves, prior to this, they’ve watched the slaughter of their pack mates, which again induces the adrenalin. In South Korea alone the dog and cat meat

traders collectively turnover 1 billion dollars! Is this culture I ask you? Or a cruel barbaric trade, and a very protable one at that, that sees the brutal slaughter of 2.5million dogs every year, cats are unaccounted for.On the 18th May 2013 our lm will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, which is also entering the competition, the rst lm of its kind ever to be shown. On this day, around the world in cities, towns and villages we will be collectively saying NOTODOGMEAT. Maybe you could make it along, if not, contact me and i’ll send you some yers which can be pinned up at train stations, local shops, vets and pet shops-we need your help, the dogs and cats need your help, to spread awareness which will in turn put pressure on the governments to act and to ban this illegal heinous trade. The truth and consistency of the campaign will eventually end the suering, we’re here

to stay, solid, the same loyalty as our best friends show us, they never let us down, and we won’t them.I will not stop ghting for our best friends, I hope you will join me. Only together will we save them from the suering, will you say notodogmeat, please do, we can’t do this without you.

Bless your heart for caring

The highlights of the day for many are the livestock showing rings. Here you will nd Cattle competing for best of breed and overall Show Champion, likewise with the Pig and Sheep sections. The pigs are always troublesome when being shown, many preferring to groove their way across the ring with their snouts in the soil - not perhaps the best way of presenting a beautifully turned out pig ready for judging!

Food and drink will be readily available to suit all pockets and tastes. There are numerous car park entrances for trac and plenty of free parking space. Every attendee will have the opportunity of getting a free Show programme.Around the Showground are specic areas of interest. For instance, local producers are present in the Farmers’ Market oering you the opportunity to purchase goods that have travelled no more than 25 miles from their origin. Now, more than ever, it is important to know the provenance of your food, ensuring that ‘you get what it says on the packet’. The much loved Womens’ Institute, more commonly known as the WI, have agreed

to stage an exhibition for us this year. The milk&more WI marquee will be oering hands on knitting and crochet advice, demonstrations on vintage hair styles and will be displaying the results of their dressmaking, baking and photography competitions.

There will be opportunities for children to participate in making collages and handicraft and, nature willing, there will be a sow and her very newly born piglets snuing in the corner. Society membership provides a very good deal including ‘forward parking’ and the exclusive use of the Members’ marquee & other benets. Member plus one guest for £37.

Two Companies Thriving and Expanding!Few companies can report

continued growth during the recent years of recession, but both Padstone Natural Stone Tiles

and Ellwoods Plumbing and Heating have managed to ‘buck the trend’ by maintaining and building on their position in the last ve years.

Padstone are currently investing in the future of their company. They have moved to larger premises at Suite 5, Old Barn Oces, East Guldeford, Nr Rye and are redesigning the new showroom to display a wide range of natural stone tiles. The new showroom has easy parking and while it still has items to be tted, you are welcome to go along and see a superb range of Natural Stone products.Padstone oers a personal tailored service to each customer ensuring you get the best natural stone product to suit your individual lifestyle.

Whatever your property - o-plan, new build or renovation you will nd a suitable natural stone material - there are 10

much more easy and ecient. The result was a boutique style bathroom making full potential of the space available and adding value to the property.

I have known Ellwoods Plumbing and Heating since the company started in 2009 and they have always been very procient with all the jobs I have given them. More recently owner ‘Will’ has expanded the company to a larger team dedicated to bringing you quality plumbing and an excellent customer service at a reasonable rate. The company is now based at The Innovation Center, Castleham Industrial Estate, Hastings and the new team consists of already experienced plumbers together with younger trainees who have undertaken an excellent training programme. Whether your business or home is in need of plumbing services, Ellwoods Plumbing and Heating has the right experience for the job. The team is highly skilled and professional, focused on providing excellent service.

dierent English Limestones alone, all of which are suitable for your kitchen bathroom, hall or any oor surface.“I recently decided to renovate an en suite bathroom which was just too small for the bedroom it served. With baths increasingly becoming a thing of the past I decided there was a great potential to increase the size of the bathroom and incorporate a walk-in shower area. The resulting bathroom would then be adaptable for everyone and not age restricted. By using a natural stone surface oers good grip, an easy clean surface and will never go out of style. Unlike ceramic tiles which may fade in time, my new bathroom will look as good in ten years as it does today.

I chose Padstone to design, supply and t my natural stone because he has many years experience right from the design stage through to the nished project. There were many dierent facets of the installation where they were able to oer excellent design advice making the day to day up keep of the bathroom

Two Companies Thriving and Expanding!Ellwoods team is highly knowledgable in both water and gas service and installation and they will handle any home, business or oce plumbing repair or plumbing xture you may need.Ellwoods provides quotes and free estimates to any of the plumbing service you require.

The age-old advice of only hiring someone who’s been recommended is perhaps still the best advice and I would happily recommend both Padstone and Ellwoods Plumbing and Heating. I am condent to go out during the day and leave my home in their hands knowing I can trust them to let themselves in, treat my house with every respect and leave it secure, clean and tidy. The nished bathroom (pictured right) is only about 8ft x 7ft but now looks and feels substantially larger because of the clever design elements incorporated by Padstone and the compact and ecient service installation from Ellwoods.

Sunday 26th May - Monday 27th May:

Medieval Fayre at Battle Abbey Green

Mediaeval Madness is coming to Battle again - the costumes are being dusted down; the maypole has been woken from its yearly hibernation ready for 2 days of merrie maypoling; the exhibitors, entertainers

and good weather have all been booked! The entertainment is a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery.

There will be talks by Hands on History and an opportunity to see and try on mediaeval amour and weaponry. Battle’s very own Knights of the Realm will be strutting their stu with boo-ing and cheering to encourage them in their chivalrous endeavours. On Monday the May Queen and Dancers from Battle and Langton School will

1066 Falconry will be there and 1066 Lacemakers will be demonstrating the delicate art of lacemaking. Our potters will be oering an opportunity for young ones to try throwing a pot, and there will be games and facepainting for the young and the young at heart. All this plus stalls oering tempting trinkets and foods!

There is no admission charge and all monies raised go directly to help fund the event which is organised by volunteers from the Battle Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by many local businesses and individuals.

St. Mary’s Nursery: Set amongst trees and woodland, next to Battle’s historic parish Church, St. Mary’s Nursery is perfect for enjoying the outdoors. Inside, the light and airy Church Hall (set up by committee through the Church) provides a busy yet homely environment to enable your child to play, learn and achieve, as well as areas for rest and quiet time. The Nursery has a separate kitchen for preparing light meals and snacks and a secure outside play area. The Nursery is accessible to all and is approached via the Church car park, offering a safe place for parents to drop off and collect children. We open 48 weeks a year, with an option to book full or part time places, including term time only.

To help you get in the mood, we will again be having a Scarecrow Workshop on the Abbey Green over the May Bank Holiday when the Battle and District Chamber of Commerce will be holding their Medieaval Fayre. This will be a chance for younger children to make their own scarecrow at the Fayre to take home or to have kit to take away and to make later. The cost of these scarecrows will be just £4.

So, join in our Beano and have a great summer in Battle!

Wagyu Beef BurgersWagyu beef ‘caviar of meats’ is back at The White HorseWagyu meat is highly sought after, but until now, only imported cuts were being served in select few restaurants. Full blood Wagyu cows have free range to graze the clover rich pasture at the farm between the Spring and Autumn months. Specific farming practices means the meat achieves the same eating quality as the Kobe beef of Japan. The meat has a distinct “marbling” – the effect of adding fat, and flavour to the joint. Fat is what holds all the flavour in a peice of beef and gives a lovely taste when cooked. The White Horse is the only place you can order pure breed Wagyu in Sussex. Harrods have long been selling the Japanese delicacy - also known as Kobe beef - at £200 per kilo. But now you can have a Wagyu burger and chips for just £13.95 at The White Horse.

of celebrity guests, food and music.Simon has a wealth of TV experience, and has appeared across many channels including BBC, ITV, C4, C5 and UKTV. Men Loves Pies, Girls Love Hummus is the perfect combination of delicious, modern dishes, personal anecdotes and the approachable laid back voice that has

made Simon so popular around the UK. With chapters including ‘Tim hates coriander’, I like prawns but they don’t like me’ and ‘A muckment of sauce’, Simon brings his inimitable style to the table and creates a variety of dishes that will please everyone including your parents, unexpected visitors, your partner and your friends. With entertaining friends and family at home becoming increasingly popular, there’s big demand for quick, simple dishes that are still suitable for special occasions and impressing guests, and Simon does not let you down! This is Simon Rimmer at his best – scrumptious, unfussy, satisfying meals to share for all occasions.

What’s On Magazine met up with Simon to talk about his new book and his recent move into the world of brewing!

Simon, could you tell us about the new book?Well, it’s my fth book and all the other books that I have written fall into the traditional role of starters, main courses, side dishes, puddings etc. This one really started from stories. It stems from things over the years that have amused me, so all the chapter headings are based around that. For instance there is a story about my dad and his reluctance to accept that you can make money

out of sandwiches. Another is the story that Tim Lovejoy hates corriander, the desserts chapter is titled ‘the pastries are assumed’ which comes from the story of an Irish friend of mine who was a great story teller and talked about going back home to Ireland and where ever he would go there would always be a big spread of food. Because the stories were the starting point it’s probably the easiest book I have ever written.

You are well known for your vegetarian recipes, how many of these are in the book? There is a whole chapter about it and all the desserts with the exception of one are vegetarian. It is always important to me to have vegetarian recipes in there whatever I do.

Are you nding the vegetarian sector still growing?Yes I think it is still growing but the dierence now is that when I wrote my rst book there were very few normal cookery books which featured vegetarian recipes whereas now they feature in all good recipe books. I don’t think people are catering specically for vegetarians, I think it is just that eating habits have changed and people are more likely to eat a dish without any meat in it simply because it is a great dish.

What about the gluten free sector of the market?Yes that is an interesting sector and there are recipes that would t into that but not necessarily intentionally. I think there are two

issues here, there are some people that cannot eat it because they have a serious allergy and there are others who have realised that cutting down gluten actually makes you feel better. There is an aweful lot of research which shows that cutting down on wheat based products improves your general wellbeing. The incidences of bowel and digestive related illnesses is far less in South East Asia which is a rice based culture than in Western Europe which is a wheat based culture.

You are doing alot more presenting since your move from ‘Something for the Weekend’ to ‘Sunday Brunch’ , how did that come about? It really just came from Channel 4, they just wanted it to be just Tim and I presenting it which meant more presenting on my part. It took me out of my comfort zone to a certain extent but I had presented other television shows before that. I found it quite dicult for the rst three months but now I have settled into it, it’s become second nature and I really enjoy it.

You recently presented part of the show from the Grand National, are you a horse racing fan?I am quite interested in it and a couple of mates of mine actually own racehorses but I actually had to leave the race before it started because I had to get back to London to record the Sunday morning programme.

You interviewed Katherine Jenkins while you were at the National, had you met her before?Yes I met her a few times, I think she is great, you always imagine that somebody who has that type of fame and expertise could perhaps be a bit of a diva, but she is just incredibly nice and really down to earth.

You obviously get on really well with your co presenter Tim Lovejoy, is he a similar character to you?I think we are quite similar in terms of things that matter to us. We are both dads and we both care massively about our kids, we love our football, we don’t particularly take ourselves too seriously so we are quite similar in that respect. Equally I think we are dierent enough so that we don’t tread on each others toes and we know what makes each other ‘tick’.

How did the development of your new beer come about? That came from a real desire from the customer’s in my restaurants to experiment with beer and food matching. There has been a big rise in British craft beers in the last ve to ten years and as a result of that, rather than having bland mid range beers, all of a sudden there are fantastic new avours which work really well with dierent foods. I had been working with the brewery ‘Robinsons’ on their food side for some time so I approached them and said that I thought there was an opportunity to be explored. We now have a beer to go with steak and red meat, a beer to go with chicken and sh and a beer to go with curry and spicy food. Hopefully it will not only sell beer for me but will increase the awareness that British beer is really fantastic. The labels on my bottles have got peel o backs on them with recipes and details of the website which has another two hundred or so other recipes to try.

Had you tried them in your restaurant before they were launched? No it was purely on tasting panels at the brewery, there are all sorts of health and safety issues so you cannot try them out on unsuspecting diners.

You seem to be going through a beard phase at the moment and the picture on the bottle has you clean shaven, will you have to go back to that now that the beer is on sale?I think that I will have to go round the two hundred and fty thousand bottles that we bottled last week and draw a beard on them with my marker pen!! I have actually taken the beard back quite a lot now, I started to look abit more hobo than cool and sophisticated so I must keep it trimmed and shaped.

You have previously worked in the Caribbean, do you still enjoy travel?Travel is my biggest luxury and if I had countless amounts of money travel would be my biggest luxury. I try and go to New York at least once a year because I always nd it quite inspiring. You can basically eat your way around the world when you are in New

York without leaving Manhattan, so new styles and trends show themselves here rst probably two or three years ahead of the UK. I am also planning to go to Italy this summer.

How much time you do spend in your two restaurants? At least three days a week so I still have a proper job and they are only fteen miles apart so that’s quite convenient.

Tim mentioned on the show the other week that you are a part time D.J is that correct?Yes, I do a thing called ‘Bop Local’ which was set up by some friends of mine. The premise, was that old farts like us who still like their music but didn’t want to go to a nightclub with twenty year olds, could still meet and enjoy music. It nishes at 2am so it is not too late, it’s local so you can walk home, and we can play the type of music we like which gave me the opportunity to do a guest set.

What type of music do you enjoy? It is quite eclectic really, anything from Northern soul to a bit of disco or Indie classics perhaps a bit of R’n’B, I suppose it’s music for middle aged people who probably should know better.

Thank You Simon

A ‘bald’ new concept from Simon RimmerMuch has been written about matching food with wine. But what about our national tipple, beer? Despite the growing trend to match beer with food, you’d be hard pushed to nd a beer which has actually been brewed to go expressly with food… until now! Highly acclaimed celebrity chef and restaurateur Simon Rimmer has teamed up with legendary award winning family brewers Robinsons to create three very unique bottled beers, specially handcrafted, to go with steak, chicken and curry.

Established chef and broadcaster, Simon Rimmer is well-known and loved for his culinary talents; owning highly successful vegetarian restaurant – Greens – in Manchester and Earle, a modern brassiere in Cheshire, selling over 100,000 copies of his delectable cookbooks, and co-presenting on Channel 4’s ever-popular Sunday Brunch with Tim Lovejoy.

But as Simon launches his fth cookery book , and Sunday Brunch celebrates its rst anniversary, Simon has also launched his very own beer in collaboration with Robinsons.

“Every bloke wants to create his own perfect pint... I’m the luckiest bloke in the world because I get to create three,” says Simon. “Not only can beer be used as a key ingredient in a wide range of recipes, but it is also a great accompaniment to enjoy alongside our favourite dishes; complementing and bringing out the very best avours in our food as the world’s best wines do. The subtleties of beer are perfect for complex food matching.”

The beer is being brewed by Robinsons, one of Britain’s most respected independent family-owned brewers, who have been brewing award-winning beers from their Unicorn Brewery based

in Stockport for more than 175 years. Robinsons are probably best known for their legendary ‘Old Tom’ strong ale, which has been voted ‘World’s Best Beer’ by the international Beers of the World publication, but in the last 12 months it is authenticity which has been brewing success for the Cheshire family brewers, namely in the form of their newer brands Dizzy Blonde and ‘build a rocket boys!’ beer which they produced in partnership with Manchester band elbow.

Simon says “Robinsons were the ideal partner being so close to Manchester, of excellent reputation, and most importantly an independent family-run brewery who share my passion for beer and food innovation.”The new beer range is being brewed to Simon’s own specications after a series of beer tastings at the brewery. Simon sampled a range of Robinsons’ ales to shortlist his preferred style of beer, taste and colour before deciding on three distinctive styles to go perfectly with steak, chicken and curry. Simon Rimmer’s trio range will be aimed at men and women, both as purchasers and drinkers, available in bottle only, and on the back of each bottle there will be a recipe to complement each beer.

John Robinson, Brand Manager at Robinsons Brewery said “We are delighted to partner Simon Rimmer – not only does he genuinely enjoy a good pint of cask ale, but his target audience comfortably t the prole of our core customers. This new range is moving beer into a dierent arena; and for the rst time is designed for the consumer to specically enjoy with food. This is the perfect platform to exhibit our passion for beer and food matching.”

With more than 360 pubs across Cheshire, Cumbria and north Wales, Derbyshire and the North West, food and beer matching has always been an integral part of the Robinsons concept and they even host an annual ‘Have you got the bottle?’ Chef’s Challenge designed to inspire innovation with beer across their pub estate.Together, the culinary connoisseur and the unshakable ‘beeroisseurs’ are proving that beer is the new wine and hops are the new grapes.

Tasting Notes – A Beer to go with Chicken: A vibrant zesty little number- absolutely bursting with Amarillo citrus hop ending with a crisp dry sweet lemon nish.

Tasting Notes – A Beer to go with Steak:A big intense beer handcrafted to heighten the nest avours of a big juicy steak. This rich ruby red ale is jam packed with toee and roasted biscuity malts, adding a depth of avour that will leave you (and your guests) wanting more…

Tasting Notes – A Beer to go with Curry: A unique craft lager brewed with rice and a fab mix of Stellar and Cascade hops, crisp and clean with hints of lemon grass and lime which has been perfectly created by Simon to cut through chilli heat and experience a smooth and tasty lemony aromatic nish.

Simon’s fth book Men Love Pies, Girls Like Hummus is out now (Mitchell Beazley, £16.99 www.octopusbooks.co.uk ) and his new range of beer is available in selected Morrisons stores across the UK.

Manon Cotes de Provence Rose – Nectar of the GodsRose is now all of a sudden fashionable again. In fact, almost anything, pink in a glass is in demand and it seems that this demand is not just relegated to the summer months. Oh, no sales of the pink stu are holding up right through the year. Yes the whole country is awash in pink. But is there any rose like Provence Rose? Being in the wine trade we get to try rose wine from all over the world but it has to be said that most of it isn’t very good.

However, Cotes de Provence stands head and shoulders above the rest. In fact, a good rose should not be seen as a cheap alternative to red or white wine. But the wine of choice to go with a wide variety of di erent dishes. It can cope with heavily dressed salads, dips, olives, grilled meats, sauces and pickles and strong full avoured sauces and it shows it versatility when partnered with sh and seafood. Manon is the quintessential Cotes de Provence Rose and considered to be by many one of the very best available.

You will notice rst the very pale colour. The rst indication that this is lip smackingly dry. And indeed it is. Balanced out by superbly balanced natural acidity and restrained citrus fruits. Two lines of alcohol with a pure line of fruit running through the centre! What could be better than a bottle of Manon Cotes de Provence Rose? Senlac Classic Car Show & Country FayreSunday June 16th 2013For the past 20 years the Senlac Classic Car Show has stood out as one of the most enjoyable shows. Despite the focus on classic cars, the organisers strive to put together a show that is for the whole family. Dozens of stalls, children’s rides and games as well as charity stalls selling jewellery, books, toys and so on sit alongside the large display of vehicles.

The 2012 show broke all records both for the number of visitors attending and for the number of cars on display. There was also a large commercial display as well as a very impressive display of military vehicles.

The emphasis this year will once again be on the family with dads at the centre of the planning. This Father’s Day will be an opportunity for the whole family to take dad out; have him entertained by Lumpy and Lumpettes band and the Lindy Hopper dancers performing at the show; have him fed from the BBQ or the Indian take-away or the other food outlets,; buy him a pint at the well stocked bar featuring real ales and then let him browse the many stalls, auto jumble and gardening outlets before wandering amongst the interesting and beautifully turned out vehicles set out in the large recreation ground opposite Bodiam Castle.

Ever conscious that family budgets are hard pressed, entrance to the show at £4.50 per adult, is half the price charged by many other local shows. All accompanying children (under 16) are allowed free entry. Entry price includes free parking.

Apart from the show itself, a big reason to give your support is that ALL the proceeds are given to charities, both local and national. Organised by the Rotary Club of Senlac and sponsored by local rms, the show has raised well in excess of £100,000 for charity. It deserves your support.

Battle Choral Society will perform J.S. Bach’s magni cent Mass in B minor, one of the supreme achievements in the classical repertoire, on the 18th May at Christ Church, Silchester Road, St. Leonards. (TN37 6GL). The Mass was probably never performed during Bach’s life time, it largely disappeared during the 18th century and was ‘rediscovered’ in the early 19th century. Today this monumental work which, unusually, encompasses both the Lutheran and Roman Catholic traditions is acknowledged to be a musical mountain for any choir to climb but one that is totally rewarding for both singers and audience. The Society’s President LOUISE WINTER, the renowned mezzo-soprano, will be singing with us. Louise has sung in opera houses across the world and she will be joined by Grace Constable, soprano, Gary Marriott, tenor and Michael White, bass. The choir and professional orchestra will be conducted by our Director of Music, John Langridge.Tickets £15 each from: Raggs Boutique, 20 High Street, Battle. The Genius Loci Bookshop, 40 Norman Road, St. Leonards, (Wed-Sat) or from 01424 870862 or 845219.A free coach will depart the Market Square, Battle at 6.30 p.m. Seats must be reserved by phoning: 01424 772895. PHOENIX’ CORONATION CELEBRATIONPhoenix Choir open their summer concert with a work composed in 2007 by their Musical Director, Michael Fields: his Midsummer Mass which he describes as “ an appealing and approachable work”. In the same year, John Rutter received a CBE in the New year’s Honours list for his “outstanding services to music”. His joyous Magni cat is the second major piece in this programme celebrating the 60th Coronation Anniversary, which concludes with popular patriotic songs.Featuring soloists Ansy Boothroyd (soprano), Lindsay Richardson (mezzo-soprano) and Nigel Richards (baritone) and accompanied by Phoenix Chamber Orchestra, this concert presents a happy tribute to our monarch.

Laton Ash Dance Centre celebrate their 39th anniversary with a spectacularly costumed and varied programme of dance, featuring the whole school from the 2.5 year olds to senior students. The centre was established in 1974 and now there are many ‘second generation’ students and even one 3rd generation! We aim to inpsire a love of dance in all our students so that they will continue to support the art form, be it as a performer or spectator.

Dementia care….in St LeonardsFollowing an extensive refurbishment programme Lauriston has just opened a new space for people with dementia in our welcoming and impressive care home. Members of our staff team are specially trained in dementia care to deliver the appropriate type of attention and support to each individual in our home. We provide a number of opportunities for people with dementia to harness their happy memories and sense of self. Through music, creative activities, a reminiscence area with photographs and various personal possessions, we open up alternative ways for people with dementia to communicate and express themselves. Each of our residents has a beautiful private room all of which are en suite. Our wide range of food is freshly cooked by our own in house chef, and we are proud of our

landscaped gardens and patio areas, tea bars and lounges and welcoming other communal areas for people to meet friends and family. If someone you love has dementia, contact Helena Barrow, our Home Manager, who will be able to help you find out more about how we can help…and care.

Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society. Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support co-ordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even

a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person. The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere. The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing

break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody.

Pets & WildlifeBirds of a FeatherI was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks in sunny Kenya last month. Doing a spot of birding in a T-shirt and shorts always appeals to me. There really are some stunning birds over there, beautifully coloured and real posers. An early morning walk in the hotel grounds was always rewarding and it set me up nicely for a spot of breakfast. A three day safari tho’ tiring was outstanding. I stayed at the Mnarani Club, Kili, a fantastic hotel which I highly recommend. www.mnarani.co.za At the time of writing there has been a huge inux of Blackcaps into the south east, these lovely little Warblers come north from southern Europe and Africa for the breeding season. Breeding birds arrive in April and May, leaving in September and October. Some European birds winter in the UK,

mainly in Southern England. It has a beautiful song and in some parts is known as the ‘Northern Nightingale’. To see over 15 Blackcaps in Feathers Nature Area was quite frankly astonishing. Both male and females were feeding on sunower hearts, peanut and suet, this is likely due to the lack of natural food as insect activity was almost non-existent in the foul weather we experienced in April. I expect garden feeders to slow down a little over the next few weeks, many of our birds have more important things on their mind so lets hope they have a more successful breeding season than last year.
