Paws, Claws & Doors: My name is Nigel, I grew up with many animals. We have approx 2 acres of land, stock fenced into smaller paddocks and an area of lawn which is securely fenced. There are several paths across �elds where we can walk away from any tra�c, but we are happy to walk their normal routes, etc if housesitting or daily visits. My aim is to spread awareness, along with a wonderful group of people, the truth behind the dog and cat

meat trade in South East Asia. A coalition has been formed – NOTODOGMEAT, a not for pro�t organisation. I have three dogs of my own, they’re loyal, kind, they give you their heart, the purest of souls, a true bond of friendship. Within the dog and cat meat trade this friendship is betrayed in the most heinous way imaginable. In South East Asia, the belief is, the more adrenalin produced before the animal is eaten, the more health bene�ts the meat has and the better the dog or cat meat tastes. They endure hours of prolonged torture themselves, prior to this, they’ve watched the slaughter of their pack mates, which again induces the adrenalin. In South Korea alone the dog and cat meat

traders collectively turnover 1 billion dollars! Is this culture I ask you? Or a cruel barbaric trade, and a very pro�table one at that, that sees the brutal slaughter of 2.5million dogs every year, cats are unaccounted for.On the 18th May 2013 our �lm will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, which is also entering the competition, the �rst �lm of its kind ever to be shown. On this day, around the world in cities, towns and villages we will be collectively saying NOTODOGMEAT. Medieval Fayre at Battle Abbey Green

Mediaeval Madness is coming to Battle again - the costumes are being dusted down; the maypole has been woken from its yearly hibernation ready for 2 days of merrie maypoling; the exhibitors, entertainers

and good weather have all been booked! The entertainment is a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery.

There will be talks by Hands on History and an opportunity to see and try on mediaeval amour and weaponry. Battle’s very own Knights of the Realm will be strutting their stu� with boo-ing and cheering to encourage them in their chivalrous endeavours. On Monday the May Queen and Dancers from Battle and Langton School will

lead the parade down the High Street at 1 pm accompanied by the Section 5 Drummers. After the crowning of the May Queen at about 1.30 the children will demonstrate how maypoling should be done!

1066 Falconry will be there and 1066 Lacemakers will be demonstrating the delicate art of lacemaking. Our potters will be o�ering an opportunity for young ones to try throwing a pot, and there will be games and facepainting for the young and the young at heart. All this plus stalls o�ering tempting trinkets and foods!

There is no admission charge and all monies raised go directly to help fund the event which is organised by volunteers from the Battle Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by many local businesses and individuals.

BATTLE GOES DANDY THIS SUMMER!

For the � fth year Battle will host a Scarecrow Festival in July. This is being run by The Battle Chamber of Commerce and

Battle Town Council with the scarecrows being displayed around the town centre between 1st and 20th July.

The theme for this year is ‘Comic Characters’. If you have a favourite comic personality, whether it is from a children’s publication of from the television, then make a scarecrow resembling that character and enter it for display in the town centre. As in the previous Festivals, there will be prizes for the best! Categories

will include ‘Best Scarecrow Made from Recycled Materials’, ‘Most Imaginative Scarecrow’, ‘Best Children’s Entry’, ’ Best Group of Scarecrows’ and ‘Best Shop Window Display’ amongst others.

This will be a chance for younger children to make their own scarecrow at the Fayre to take home or to have kit to take away and to make later. The cost of these scarecrows will be just £4.

Callenders Restaurant We were over in Hailsham last week doing the weekly shop and decided to pop into Callenders for a spot of lunch.I love fresh �sh so I was delighted to see “Grilled Lemon sole from Newhaven” on their impressive specials board. The Mrs opted for the Chargrilled Halloumi Salad which she said was the perfect light lunch with the homemade bread and a large glass of Pinot. My �sh was fantastic too. Before leaving we paid the bill, a very reasonable £19.95, and booked a table for the following evening (I had my eye on the 16 oz. T-Bone steak). Sunday Brunch, the popular weekly show which wakes the nation up on a Sunday morning with a mix

of celebrity guests, food and music.Simon has a wealth of TV experience, and has appeared across many channels including BBC, ITV, C4, C5 and UKTV. Simon’s popularity really took o� when he landed a role on the BBC2 Sunday show - ‘Something for the Weekend’, where he cooked and interviewed guests. He has presented and cooked across many shows and his numerous credits include Great British Waste Menu, Meals in Moments, The One Show, Breaking into Tesco, Recipe for Success and This Little Farmer went to Market.

To add to his talents, Simon has written and published six successful books, which continue to sell well. His latest, Men Love Pies, Women Like Hummus has just been published. Simon also regularly contributes to food magazines including Delicious, Olive, BBC Good Food Magazine and Vegetarian Living.

Simon is a �rm favourite at food festivals and demonstrations across the country. He has in the past appeared at BBC Good Food Show and Grand Designs, as well as many local and regional events across the UK.

Aside from his hectic �lming schedule Simon is Chef patron of

his two award-winning restaurants in Manchester; Greens and Earle. As a restaurateur this is where Simon’s real passion for food began, and he continues to cook in the restaurants every week - which he enjoys immensely – and which also keeps him in touch with the culinary trends of the moment.

What’s On Magazine met up with Simon to talk about his new book and his recent move into the world of brewing!

Simon, could you tell us about the new book?Well, it’s my �fth book and all the other books that I have written fall into the traditional role of starters, main courses, side dishes, puddings etc. This one really started from stories. It stems from things over the years that have amused me, so all the chapter headings are based around that. For instance there is a story about my dad and his reluctance to accept that you can make money

out of sandwiches. Another is the story that Tim Lovejoy hates corriander, the desserts chapter is titled ‘the pastries are assumed’ which comes from the story of an Irish friend of mine who was a great story teller and talked about going back home to Ireland and where ever he would go there would always be a big spread of food. Because the stories were the starting point it’s probably the easiest book I have ever written.

You are well known for your vegetarian recipes, how many of these are in the book?There is a whole chapter about it and all the desserts with the exception of one are vegetarian. It is always important to me to have vegetarian recipes in there whatever I do.

Are you �nding the vegetarian sector still growing?Yes I think it is still growing but the di�erence now is that when I wrote my �rst book there were very few normal cookery books which featured vegetarian recipes whereas now they feature in all good recipe books. I don’t think people are catering speci�cally for vegetarians, I think it is just that eating habits have changed and people are more likely to eat a dish without any meat in it simply because it is a great dish.

What about the gluten free sector of the market?Yes that is an interesting sector and there are recipes that would �t into that but not necessarily intentionally. I think there are two

issues here, there are some people that cannot eat it because they have a serious allergy and there are others who have realised that cutting down gluten actually makes you feel better. There is an aweful lot of research which shows that cutting down on wheat based products improves your general wellbeing. The incidences of bowel and digestive related illnesses is far less in South East Asia which is a rice based culture than in Western Europe which is a wheat based culture.

You are doing alot more presenting since your move from ‘Something for the Weekend’ to ‘Sunday Brunch’ , how did that come about?It really just came from Channel 4, they just wanted it to be just Tim and I presenting it which meant more presenting on my part. It took me out of my comfort zone to a certain extent but I had presented other television shows before that. I found it quite di�cult for the �rst three months but now I have settled into it, it’s become second nature and I really enjoy it.

You recently presented part of the show from the Grand National, are you a horse racing fan?I am quite interested in it and a couple of mates of mine actually own racehorses but I actually had to leave the race before it started because I had to get back to London to record the Sunday morning programme.

You interviewed Katherine Jenkins while you were at the National, had you met her before?Yes I met her a few times, I think she is great, you always imagine that somebody who has that type of fame and expertise could perhaps be a bit of a diva, but she is just incredibly nice and really down to earth.

You obviously get on really well with your co presenter Tim Lovejoy, is he a similar character to you?I think we are quite similar in terms of things that matter to us. We are both dads and we both care massively about our kids, we love our football, we don’t particularly take ourselves too seriously so we are quite similar in that respect. Equally I think we are di�erent enough so that we don’t tread on each others toes and we know what makes each other ‘tick’.

How did the development of your new beer come about?That came from a real desire from the customer’s in my restaurants to experiment with beer and food matching. There has been a big rise in British craft beers in the last �ve to ten years and as a result of that, rather than having bland mid range beers, all of a sudden there are fantastic new �avours which work really well with di�erent foods. I had been working with the brewery ‘Robinsons’ on their food side for some time so I approached them and said that I thought there was an opportunity to be explored.We now have a beer to go with steak and red meat, a beer to go with chicken and �sh and a beer to go with curry and spicy food. Hopefully it will not only sell beer for me but will increase the awareness that British beer is really fantastic. The labels on my bottles have got peel o� backs on them with recipes and details of the website which has another two hundred or so other recipes to try.

Had you tried them in your restaurant before they were launched?No it was purely on tasting panels at the brewery, there are all sorts of health and safety issues so you cannot try them out on unsuspecting diners.

You seem to be going through a beard phase at the moment and the picture on the bottle has you clean shaven, will you have to go back to that now that the beer is on sale?I think that I will have to go round the two hundred and �fty thousand bottles that we bottled last week and draw a beard on them with my marker pen!! I have actually taken the beard back quite a lot now, I started to look abit more hobo than cool and sophisticated so I must keep it trimmed and shaped.

You have previously worked in the Caribbean, do you still enjoy travel?Travel is my biggest luxury and if I had countless amounts of money travel would be my biggest luxury. I try and go to New York at least once a year because I always �nd it quite inspiring. You can basically eat your way around the world when you are in New

York without leaving Manhattan, so new styles and trends show themselves here �rst probably two or three years ahead of the UK. I am also planning to go to Italy this summer.

How much time you do spend in your two restaurants?At least three days a week so I still have a proper job and they are only �fteen miles apart so that’s quite convenient.

Tim mentioned on the show the other week that you are a part time D.J is that correct?Yes, I do a thing called ‘Bop Local’ which was set up by some friends of mine. The premise, was that old farts like us who still like their music but didn’t want to go to a nightclub with twenty year olds, could still meet and enjoy music. It �nishes at 2am so it is not too late, it’s local so you can walk home, and we can play the type of music we like which gave me the opportunity to do a guest set.

What type of music do you enjoy?It is quite eclectic really, anything from Northern soul to a bit of disco or Indie classics perhaps a bit of R’n’B, I suppose it’s music for middle aged people who probably should know better.

LeisureDanceHouseUKIt’s hard to believe that DanceHouseUK opened its doors to aspiring dancers and performers three years ago this September. “It’s true that time � ies when you are having fun” Natascia Mazzucato, principal of DanceHouseUK said. “I am so proud in all that the school and students have achieved as well as the dedication and support I get from my team, students and families!” DanceHouseUK really is a family, as we take great pride and pleasure in each other’s successes and progress”.

Natascia ex Elmhurst, Professional Dancer, and Legat Teacher of 9 years at Bede’s, opened DanceHouseUK in order to pass on her knowledge and experience to young hopefuls, to follow in her footsteps. “I want to see young people inspired and to develop a life-long passion for dance and the arts.”

DanceHouseUK have a lot to o� er with a very varied timetable of all dance genres; ballet, modern, jazz, tap, contemporary, classical Greek and street dance are all o� ered. Not only is DanceHouseUK approved by the Council for Dance Education and Training, but furthermore, DanceHouseUK is an ISTD Approved Dance Centre that o� ers DDI and DDE Teacher Training. “We aim to inspire and develop the best teachers around, with good solid technique and enthusiasm!”

Senlac Classic Car Show & Country FayreSunday June 16th 2013For the past 20 years the Senlac Classic Car Show has stood out as one of the most enjoyable shows. Despite the focus on classic cars, the organisers strive to put together a show that is for the whole family. Dozens of stalls, children’s rides and games as well as charity stalls selling jewellery, books, toys and so on sit alongside the large display of vehicles.

The 2012 show broke all records both for the number of visitors attending and for the number of cars on display. There was also a large commercial display as well as a very impressive display of military vehicles.

The emphasis this year will once again be on the family with dads at the centre of the planning. This Father’s Day will be an opportunity for the whole family to take dad out; have him entertained by Lumpy and Lumpettes band and the Lindy Hopper dancers performing at the show; have him fed from the BBQ or the Indian take-away or the other food outlets,; buy him a pint at the well stocked bar featuring real ales and then let him browse the many stalls, auto jumble and gardening outlets before wandering amongst the interesting and beautifully turned out vehicles set out in the large recreation ground opposite Bodiam Castle.

Ever conscious that family budgets are hard pressed, entrance to the show at £4.50 per adult, is half the price charged by many other local shows. All accompanying children (under 16) are allowed free entry. Entry price includes free parking.

Apart from the show itself, a big reason to give your support is that ALL the proceeds are given to charities, both local and national. Organised by the Rotary Club of Senlac and sponsored by local �rms, the show has raised well in excess of £100,000 for charity. It deserves your support.

Battle Choral Society will perform J.S. Bach’s magni� cent Mass in B minor, one of the supreme achievements in the classical repertoire, on the 18th May at Christ Church, Silchester Road, St. Leonards. (TN37 6GL). The Mass was probably never performed during Bach’s life time, it largely disappeared during the 18th century and was ‘rediscovered’ in the early 19th century. Today this monumental work which, unusually, encompasses both the Lutheran and Roman Catholic traditions is acknowledged to be a musical mountain for any choir to climb but one that is totally rewarding for both singers and audience. The Society’s President LOUISE WINTER, the renowned mezzo-soprano, will be singing with us. SPRING EVENTS AT PASHLEY MANOR GARDENSAs we come into May we see the end of Pashley’s annual Tulip Festival. As well as the thousands of tulips in the gardens, experts from 62 times Chelsea gold medal winners Bloms Bulbs will be on site with a beautiful display of cut tulips in vases, and to give advice and to take bulb orders, until 6th May.

In mid-May the Plant and Garden Fair is on Sunday 19th – a reduced admission price of £7.50 covers entrance to both the gardens and the fair. Selected nurseries, garden related companies and local produce stalls will be at Pashley - including suppliers specialising in fruit trees, Japanese maples, wild �owers, herbs and ferns as well as a wide range of perennials, shrubs, bedding plants, vegetable plants and more.

Other shortlisted products include innovative and environmentally friendly planting essentials such as wire and glass cloches, a compost aerator, twine made by sustainable wool and gardening gloves made from 100 percent bamboo. Garden features such as a decorative planter and trellis designed for small city gardens, a stunning new garden building by Crown Pavilions, and a plant wind sculpture created speci�cally for RHS Chelsea Flower Show are also included. The winning product will be selected by a team of judges, including businesswoman and Dragon’s Den investor Deborah Meaden, and will be awarded at the show on Tuesday 21 May.

This year’s Show will also feature a variety of unique products including: a hand-woven bronze sculpture from award-winning sculptor Rachel Carter; revolutionary

garden landscaping concept WoodBlocX; and Sparrow and Fitch’s Berkeley hotel-inspired Birdhouse.

A number of designers have created one-o� pieces to celebrate 100 years of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society.Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support co-ordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even

a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person. The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere. The kitchen is always a hive of activity with lots of baking and food preparation always on the menu. Those wishing for a more relaxing

break can take advantage of the recent therapeutic treatments on offer including reflexology and chiropody.

Pets & WildlifeBirds of a FeatherI was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks in sunny Kenya last month. Doing a spot of birding in a T-shirt and shorts always appeals to me. There really are some stunning birds over there, beautifully coloured and real posers. An early morning walk in the hotel grounds was always rewarding and it set me up nicely for a spot of breakfast. A three day safari tho’ tiring was outstanding. I stayed at the Mnarani Club, Kili�, a fantastic hotel which I highly recommend. www.mnarani.co.za At the time of writing there has been a huge in�ux of Blackcaps into the south east, these lovely little Warblers come north from southern Europe and Africa for the breeding season. Breeding birds arrive in April and May, leaving in September and October. Some European birds winter in the UK,

mainly in Southern England. It has a beautiful song and in some parts is known as the ‘Northern Nightingale’. To see over 15 Blackcaps in Feathers Nature Area was quite frankly astonishing. Both male and females were feeding on sun�ower hearts, peanut and suet, this is likely due to the lack of natural food as insect activity was almost non-existent in the foul weather we experienced in April. I expect garden feeders to slow down a little over the next few weeks, many of our birds have more important things on their mind so lets hope they have a more successful breeding season than last year.
