From parents to poseurs, figurative nudes to famous faces, and expressive sketches to piercing photo-realism, the variety and vitality in the exhibition continues to make it an unmissable highlight of the annual art calendar.

This fascinating photographic exhibition illustrates the life of actress and fashion icon Audrey Hepburn (1929 – 1993). From her early years as a chorus girl in London’s West End through to her philanthropic work in later life, Portraits of an Icon celebrates one of the world’s most photographed and recognisable stars.

A selection of more than seventy images will define Hepburn’s iconography, including classic and rarely seen prints from leading twentieth-century photographers such as Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Terry O’Neill, Norman Parkinson and Irving Penn. Alongside these, an array of vintage magazine covers and film stills will complete her captivating story.

Marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815) this exhibition illustrates the Duke of Wellington’s extraordinary life as a soldier and statesman. Highlights include Goya’s revealing portrait and a daguerreotype by Antoine Claudet, in the new medium of photography, taken on Wellington’s 75th birthday in 1844.

The full 20.6m long printed panorama of Wellington’s funeral procession will be displayed on Thursday 18 June between 10.00 – 11.00, and an interactive version is available to view in the Digital Space.

Alberto Giacometti is widely regarded as one of the most important and distinctive artists of the twentieth century. A restless innovator, he explored a range of styles and subjects; however portraiture remained a continuous preoccupation.

This major exhibition is the first to focus on Giacometti’s portraits and spans his entire career. The show includes important paintings, sculpture and drawings within sections devoted to each of his principal models, and illuminates Giacometti’s obsessive evocation of a human presence.

Manchester Art GalleryArtists in the Frame: Self Portraits by Van Dyck and Others

The iconic Van Dyck Self-Portrait is at the heart of this exhibition exploring identity and self-expression. Historic works from Manchester Art Gallery’s collection will feature alongside loans from the National Portrait Gallery and a number of contemporary works.

Portraits by Matthew Smith of the author Roald Dahl and British film star Jean Simmons are displayed alongside Frank Dobson’s portrait of the writer Osbert Sitwell. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Barber Institute and the M.A. in Art History at the University of Birmingham.
