Vandalism in Karehana Bay scenic reserve upsets kindy kidsLeo from Plimmerton Kindergarten tells us about some very distressing vandalismin this area which has made the reserve unsafe for the small children who wereusing the reserve every week. Teenagers have been drinking and breakingbottles there. There is broken glass everywhere. And they have demolished ahut the children used to play in ripping off corrugated iron and generally makingthe area unsafe. There is a letter on our website www.plimmerton.org.nz/top-stories/karehana-reserve/  that the vandals should read. Plus photos of thedamage.

Please notify police 238 1400 if you know who these offenders are.

Public consultation … security camerasThis is the fourth community notice about security cameras for Plimmerton’s entrancesand we are still seeking your advice and input.

Following up on residents’ concerns we have investigated options and secured quotesfor cameras to go at the rail crossing and Airlie Road entrances to Plimmerton. Thesewill be installed in early 2016 if we are successful in securing the funding we arecurrently exploring. We are working with Porirua City Council and the police to tie upall the details. Signage will be discreet and minimal.

The main points to consider are:

•  The cameras record vehicle model and registration numbers.

•  The footage is reviewed only when a crime has been reported.

•

Footage is only ever reviewed by police.

•  There is no way footage can be reviewed by anyone else.

•

Footage not viewed within an allocated time period is deleted.

•

The footage is secure and evidence quality.

•

The purpose is to secure convictions of people committing criminaloffences.

•

Without this resource police cannot follow up on vehicle movementsrelating to crimes committed here.

Public consultation … school kindy traffic safety areaThis is the third community notice about the Slow Zone signage for the central villagearea and we are again seeking your advice and input.

Following concerns expressed by parents collecting and dropping off children at peaktimes and other residents with issues relating to traffic safety we are working with the

roading team at Porirua City Council to come up with a series of safety measures. Onour web site there will soon be a map of the area showing where three SLOW ZONE signswill be placed. These are reminders for locals and an alert for visitors that at times thisis a busy area with a primary school, kindergarten, Plunket rooms, a church, a crècheand toy library and a medical centre. As shown on the map the signage relates only tothe central village from Bath Street on Steyne Ave at one end and from the cutting onSunset Parade at the other. The third sign will be on Motuhara Road just past the kids’pathway down to the school.

Thanks to kindergarten and school parents for your valuable input to this process.

The key points are:

•  This is signage ONLY

•  There may also be some painting on the road in these areas to reinforcethe message

•  There are NO speed bumps proposed

•  After a period this measure will be reviewed

•

Porirua city is looking at a system of school zones which would have a 30klimit around all schools in the region at key times. This is one of theirlong term objectives

•  Policing and monitoring of the zone will be implemented concurrentlywith the sign installation and probable road painting

•

A pedestrian crossing on Beach Road is being looked at again.

Tagging removal - who you gonna call?If you spot tags please call the council 237 5089 or email [email protected] so theycan be quickly removed.

Porirua also has a team of heroes who get out and about and remove tagging whereverthey see it. Richard Witheford-Smith says, “You can join this select group of communityvolunteers who meet over coffee to discuss tactics. Contact [email protected] and I’ll let you know where the next coffee meet is. Ourshout!”

A special end-of-year shout to the team who work in Plimmerton to remove tags so thatmost of us never have to see them. Great stuff!

Cell phone users will be pingedDuring recent traffic monitoring seven people were spotted driving on SteyneAve and using cell phones … in one ten minute period!
