As we head towards summer, it’s time to start thinking about those end of year plans! In November, we’re looking forward to fabulous frocks, a scrumptious three-course lunch and live horse racing at our annual Melbourne Cup event (p.33), and on Remembrance Day we’ll bring you a salute to the ANZAC spirit with War Stories (p.34)

At this year’s Christmas Dinner and Show, expect some hilarious antics as Basil, Manuel and Sybil take over the Centre as The Fawlty Towers Impersonators (p.36). And if you’re around for New Year’s Eve, don’t miss our all-inclusive celebrations with a delicious meal, divine wines, live music and A Parisian Showgirl Spectacular (p.41).

Drama lovers will love the award-winning play Bare Witness (p.26) in October, which will change the way you look at the news, and the surreal award-winning comedy Chasing the Whale (p.32) from our Artist in Residence – Soapbox Theatre Productions in November.

The Gallery will present a fascinating exhibition about the identity of the Gold Coast in October, called Sexualising the City (p.8), which features art, fashion, popular culture and architecture from the 1920s to the present.

Our 25th year has been an inspiring 12 months f illed with thought-provoking performances, f ilms and exhibitions. Keep your eye out for a thrilling new line-up of shows in our 2013 Subscription Season … all will be revealed on Tuesday 20 November!

We host and tour a diverse program of national and regional exhibitions, and each year we present at least one exhibition of works from our City’s collection.

You don’t need to know anything about art and nobody will ask you hard questions, but you’ll leave feeling uplifted, creative and inspired.

This exhibition is a chance for local Indigenous stories and artworks to be acknowledged and celebrated. The biennial award is a Gold Coast City Council initiative, managed by the Cultural Development Unit that offers emerging and established Indigenous artists an opportunity to exhibit and promote their work to the wider community.

The exhibition will be off icially opened by His Worship the Mayor Tom Tate on 17 October in the Foyer Gallery.

Works are for sale and a colour catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The Queensland College of Art at Griff ith University on the Gold Coast offers an excellent visual arts program, with many former students going on to become nationally and internationally renowned artists. Works by undergraduate and Honours students studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Visual Media will be on display at Gold Coast City Gallery, providing invaluable experience in the art gallery industry to the students.

This exhibition is a chance for the local community to view works which are the result of three years of theoretical and studio-based tertiary study in the visual arts.

Within the popular imagination, there is a direct link between the image of the sexualised body and the Gold Coast. These perceptions are however often disparaged and limited by cliché.

Sexualising the City confronts this view by presenting important and visually rich images and objects from art, design, fashion, popular culture and architecture from the 1920s to the present. It offers a more layered and diverse view of how these images contributed to our city’s identity.

Contemporary artists include Scott Redford, Paul Wrigley, Abbey McCulloch, Trent Parker, Ruth Madison and John Gollings. Their works will be joined by works from the collection by Peter Powditch and Betty Quelhurst and fashion by Ivy Hassard.

EVENTSTo coincide with the exhibition, the Gallery will produce a catalogue and host several events including a Public Forum, Artist and Curator Talks and more.

This year marks the 44th year of the Gold Coast Art Prize, which is open to all art media except photography. Popular with local and nationally recognised artists, there is a total of $35,000 in prize and aquisition money. The judge for the 2012 prize is Dr Campbell Gray, Director University of Queensland Art Museum, who brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise in arts and education.

This annual exhibition is a chance for local audiences and visitors to view a selection of works that document excellent contemporary art practice in Australia.

A morning walk along the shore unearths a myriad of ocean and sand ravaged natural debris. However it is the man-made abandoned detritus that appeals to Narelle Autio, a celebrated South Australia-based artist. For Autio, each piece carries memories of long summers past. Using large format f ilm, Autio photographs each f ind with an exacting eye. When viewed as a collection on a white wall, the appeal and beauty of each individual object is amplif ied.

As coast-dwellers, The Summer of Us delves into our aff inity with the ocean. Autio’s works become a collective memory and are a stark reminder ofthe continuing impact we have on our environment. It is a document of what we as a people and a culture have left behind after those long summer days.

Explore the lives of incarcerated young girls who were forced to constantly keep their ‘eyes to the f loor’. Based on true events that occurred at the Hay Institution for Girls in NSW in the 60s and 70s, this young adult play is about emotional survival in an institution determined to break the human spirit.

Eyes to the Floor is moving por trait of hope that survives even in the worst of conditions.

This project is made possible through The Friends of The Ar ts Centre’s Youth Ar ts Academy funding. The project provides young Gold Coast performers with exper t guidance under the professional direction of Andrea Moor who will be assisted by Jessica Westhead from Soapbox, The Ar ts Centre Gold Coast 2012 Ar tists in Residence.

The Friends is a not-for-prof it organisation of 1600 members. Its origin dates back to the 1960s when a small group of Gold Coast residents raised funds to build a cultural centre, culminating with its opening in December 1986.
