Harry Potter Week To celebrate the 21st anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone book release, Hay War Memorial High School became Hogwarts for Week 9. Last Monday was a fantastic start to Harry Potter week, with fun activities at lunch and recess. We started the week with Ms Bradley having a house sorting quiz and students then had the opportunity to create a patronus watercolour masterpiece. Tuesday, students had the opportunity to watch some harry potter chibi cartoons and make some creative wizard cards. They looked really cool! While they were making their masterpieces they had the chance to watch the Philosophers Stone. Wednesday, Miss Hatfield held harry potter trivia and muggle chess in the library. It was interesting to see how competitive everyone got! Thursday, Mr Hefer and Miss Bradley held a witch paper craft lesson that taught students how to make howlers. Friday was a casual, magic themed dress up day,

students were asked to bring in a gold coin to help pay for the barbeque. At lunchtime the SRC held a barbeque, which the SRC students helped cook and serve. After everyone ate their sausage sandwiches Ms Bradley hosted the best dressed contest with Gemma Tassell, Hermione Granger, being awarded the winner. Stage 5 Debating Our Stage 5 debating team played a very tough round against Barham High last week via video conference. With veterans Gemma as second speaker and Olivia as third they welcomed reserve Charlee as the team

advisor and our new recruit Delilah into the team as first speaker. Asha and Emma were both on the bench for medical reasons. The toss meant Hay argued the negative for the topic “That voting should be voluntary” and they structured a really strong case with excellent, well supported arguments. All girls spoke effectively and convincingly. Unfortunately, in a very close debate, the Arts Unit adjudicator on the day awarded the debate to Barham. Well done to all for an amazing effort. ML Gardam Debating coordinator.

Planning Day On Thursday 21st July SRC held their first official meeting day where they inducted the official roles of an SRC. Inducted were Gemma Tassell as our chairperson and Charly Moorhouse as vice chairperson. Joseph Wilson was elected treasurer, Lily Masters elected as secretary and Emma Johnston and Hannah Shae as publicity officers. We participated in group building skill games and learnt more about each other. We discussed new ideas for fundraisers and PBL rewards with Miss Hatfield helping with ideas. After this, we walked to the convent and had lunch, and used Mr Caughey’s rule of no phones during meals. We learnt some interesting things about each other and had a great time. We then walked back to school and brainstormed ideas for socials, fundraisers and charities. We would like to thank Ms Bradley for teaching us all these valuable life skills and we hope every student looks forward to an interesting year involved with the SRC. Sport On Tuesday 2nd July 20 students from HWMHS travelled across to Deniliquin to compete in the Zone Athletics carnival. There were a number of students competing for the day from Deniliquin, Tooleybuc, Balranald and Barham, Finley and of course Hay. The bus arrived in good time Tuesday morning after a foggy trip, although the weather ended up being ideal for an athletics carnival. The day was well organised and most students competed in at least two events with many tasting success. The efforts of all students were fantastic and their overall behaviour was exceptional. Towards the end of the day when relays were announced, some of the students got together and decided to organised the Hay relay teams. The leadership demonstrated was to be commended, as was the effort by Hay in the relays. As a school, our participation was strong and our students really showcased our school values through their attitudes at the carnival. Congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the Regional Carnival which will be held next term: Jayke Meldrum Ward, Jack Headon, Hugh Crighton, Hannah Stewart, Darci Masters, Alex Hussain, Charlee Masters, Paul Vula, Janae Winzar, Lily Masters,

Lainey Biggs, Kate Pingiaro and Lote Clark.

Riverina Tennis Trials Last Friday the 29th of June, Kenny Hargraves travelled across to Wagga to compete in Riverina Tennis Trials. Kenny, alongside many other boys, from parts of the Riverina, competed to be selected for the Open Boys Riverina side. Of the many people that trialled, Kenny was one of 9 players to be selected. Throughout the day, boys were split into 3 pools and had to play against other high quality components to showcase their talents. To be selected, the boys had to demonstrate positive sporting attitudes and a high standard of skill in tennis. Being selected by the Riverina side means Kenny will play State tennis in Inverelle in Septemeber against many other teams throughout NSW. He will represent the Riverina team alongside 8 other boys who will play a high level of tennis over 3 days, comprising of singles and doubles games. At this level there is opportunity for participants to be selected for a NSW state team. Well done Kenny on such an excellent achievement. Good luck in September!

Year 9 Science Year 9 Science recently had the opportunity to dissect hearts and kidneys with Mr Mackintosh. This lesson received a thumbs up from students.

From the Principal A great start to the Year 6 STEM after school program. STEM is based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM is important because it is in every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field. We look forward to inviting Year 6 back next term after school. We will send an information note to the schools to let you know when the afternoon program will be available.

This has been another busy term at our school especially in learning, sporting and extra curricular activities.

Our School Plan continues to support our teaching staff to make a commitment to provide opportunities and create learning environments for students to pursue excellence.

At our core we are characterised by our school values of respect, achieve and responsible which determine the culture in which our school community exists. This provides an environment where students can flourish and achieve their goals.

At Hay War Memorial High School, education is not just learning facts and figures; it is about understanding that the journey is more important than the destination. It is about continuously improving the entire person, not just their knowledge, but also their attitudes and behaviours so they become productive members of our community.

I would like to thank our school community for their investment in our school and commitment to ensuring our focus is on student wellbeing, the learning journey and the pursuit of excellence.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Term 3 undertaking more learning, sporting and extra curricular activities. Mr Y Chambers Principal

Meet Our Staff

Mrs Lilianna Aylett - Mathematics/TAS Head Teacher What are your main commitments at HWMHS? I am very passionate about teaching Mathematics and I am committed to developing lessons to best help the students learn in this subject. I try to provide them with engaging lessons and give them different strategies when learning concepts to help them to learn and achieve in this area. What has helped you improve your learning most and why? My learning improved through the support of Jim Mather, who was a principal for many years at HWMHS in my early years of teaching. He always had the best interest for his staff’s welfare and he saw the potential that I had to further my career path in this profession. He was the reason why I became a Head Teacher and I do not regret this decision. What has been your most memorable moment so far at HWMHS? My most memorable moment at HWMHS was the day my son, Blake, was selected to be the school

captain in 2010. I also treasure the day that my three children completed their secondary education at

HWMHS. Their last day was very emotional and I will always store these moments in my memory.

Meet Our Students Michael Dunn - Year 12 What is your favourite subject at HWMHS and why? Business studies is my favourite subject. It is fun and Miss Hatfield is a good teacher. Everyone in the class are good friends and nice to each other. What has been your most memorable moment at HWMHS so far? My most memorable moment so far was when Mr Honan showed us his army gear and ran us through some of the army drills. Where do you see yourself in ten years? In ten years I hope to be finished studying accounting at university and working in an accounting firm.
