U15 Basketball In Week 7, Hay travelled to Deniliquin to compete in a gala day for the U15 CHS basketball knockout. We were fortunate to have both a girls team playing at the high school and a boys team playing at the basketball stadium. Both schools came up against tough competition against Deniliquin, Finley, Barham and Balranald with all these schools having access to basketball competitions in close proximity unlike Hay. The girls had a tough day out in all their games but are to be commended for their attitude and the manner at which they displayed the school values. The boys defeated Finley, drew with Balranald and a competitive loss to Barham. The highlight of the day was Hay pushing a very strong Deniliquin proving to be Deni’s toughest match all day. Deniliquin High School ultimately progressed in both the girls and boys competitions.

Monte Barnes and Hannah Stewart had the privilege of attending the 2019 Secondary Schools Student Leadership Program in Sydney last week.

The day involved student leaders from a variety of NSW secondary schools meeting at the NSW Parliament House to be addressed by members of parliament who spoke about their views on leadership, opportunities and their own path to parliamentary representation. After this students went into the Legislative Assembly and Council to watch parliament in action. It was a very important day in parliament as the members were replying to the recent budget and debating proposed amendments to the Aged and Disability Care Bill that is an unprecedented constitutional situation that members were passionate about. After this, students had the opportunity to meet with their local member. Helen Dalton was generous in giving the students from her electorate a good amount of time and discussed her experiences as a newly elected member, her goals for our region and also listened to students as they identified issues of importance to them. During lunch, we saw democracy in action with a protest taking place outside the fence of parliament.

After lunch, the students walked to Government House where we were given a tour of the magnificent colonial building and the tour guide shared her enthusiasm and knowledge of Australian history and the duties performed by the Governor. We had some time to enjoy the grounds of Government House and caught glimpses of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as we wandered the gardens. We assembled in the ballroom and were addressed by the Governor of NSW, The Honourable Margret Beazley, AO, QC. New to her role, she outlined the role of the Governor, her outlook and experiences in the role to date and then encouraged questions and discussion from students. We were then given an afternoon tea on the verandah and a chance to meet with the Governor, her husband and other students.

Monte and Hannah also paid a quick visit to the Hyde Park War Memorial where they found soil from Hay in the recently established exhibition that has soil from every town in NSW. The Captains were impressed by the memorial and were able to make connections between it and our school and brought much knowledge and understanding to the visit from their own research for the ANZAC Day speeches they presented earlier this year.

Monte and Hanna represented Hay War Memorial High School

with pride and frequently received positive comments from the

public about their uniform. They were excellent ambassadors for

our school and congratulated on upholding their leadership role

so well.
