HIGHLIGHTS RAS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 178

Press Conference on Impact of COVID-19On 13 Feb 2020, RAS held a press conference for two reasons. One, many members of the press have contacted us to enquire about the impact of the COVID-19. Two, we would like to take this opportunity to share with the press the current and potential impact of COVID-19 to our businesses and the challenges we have to face to save the livelihoods of our employees.

The press conference saw media reporters from The Straits TImes, Channel News Asia, LianHe ZaoBao, Mothership.sg and more.

During the press conference, RAS announced that the association has appealed for partnerships with 24 landlords. The association is hoping for at least a 50% rebate for the first 3 months.

Since Singapore announced it’s first confirmed case of the COVID-19, in just 22 days, F&B owners saw a dip in earnings and customers and are looking at a 50-80% loss of revenue.

Wages and rental costs are two of the highest operating expenses. Protecting the livelihoods of our people is of our priority, where over 200,000 employees have been affected since the outbreak.

While there is an increase in food deliveries in this crisis, the drop in revenue is currently way too high to be offset by any marginal increase in online deliveries.

It is difficult to compare the current situation with the COVID-19 with the SARS outbreak. The public’s heightened fear to visit malls makes it difficult for marketing campaigns to thrive. Restaurants may also cannibalize businesses from others if they offer any discounts and promotions during this time.

RAS also revealed that we were in talks with various government agencies and had also previously penned a letter to Minister Chan Chun Sing.

RAS TownhallOn 5 March 2020, RAS called for a townhall meeting to share with members on how the association is tackling the COVID-19 situation in Singapore.

Previously, RAS called for its members to take part in two snap polls, to provide relevant data to assist in the on-going negotiations with various landlords. The data revealed that some businesses saw a drastic dip in revenue of almost 80% in just one to two months.

The Management Committee of RAS shared information received from various landlords with regards to rental rebates and advertising budgets. RAS members also shared their feedback and struggles in this close-door discussion.

Enterprise Singapore was also present to note the feedback of our members and addressed concerns.

Workforce Singapore also gave a talk on the various grants available to help F&B players.

Also invited to the townhall were bank representatives from DBS, OCBC and UOB who provided more information on Working Capital Loans to help our members tide through the crisis.

Mentorship Programme

Enterprise Singapore (ESG)’s Global Ready Talent Programme (GRTP) aims to build a pipeline of talent to support Singapore enterprises with their overseas expansion, by exposing young Singaporeans to internships and overseas work opportunities. This helps overcome enterprises’ challenge in finding the right talent to manage their overseas operations.

Singapore enterprises keen to build a talent pipeline to support their business expansion can provide placements for both local and overseas internships.

ESG and Singapore enterprises or Institutes of Higher Learnings will co-fund travel and subsistence allowance for students on overseas internships. On top of this, Enterprise Singapore will provide funding support of up to 70% for qualifying costs such as monthly stipend of students on internships, or expenditure in sending these individuals overseas.

The RAS mentorship programme is an unique 6-month programme that allows young F&B restaurateurs to learn from our team of esteemed industry veterans.

Mentors will guide their mentees through individual sessions and provide invaluable advice and insights. The programme seeks to strengthen the ever-growing F&B community and aims to bring business success to more local companies.

F&B Tech Reboot

The winner for each business case under the Open Category will be awarded test-bedding opportunities for their solution with the F&B player backing the business case.

Results for the F&B Tech Reboot

OpenCategory:

Student Category:

Digitalisation has been a key pursuit of many F&B companies in their bid to improve productivity and make better-informed business decisions. However, interoperability across different digital solutions deployed in silo is often a major challenge, integrating these solutions are often complicated and costly. Insights on customer purchasing behaviour to support targeted marketing and business plans may also be lost because of the lack of data sharing. Companies are thus unable to maximise the value that these solutions bring to their operations.

RAS, supported by Enterprise Singapore, launched an innovation challenge, F&B Tech Reboot, on 6 November 2019. The challenge called for solutions to solve specific businesschallenges through integrating software solutions with open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Software partners with open and well-documented APIs were also engaged to supportnchallengers in their submissions (www.fnbtechreboot.sg/solution-partners).

Four F&B companies (Bettr Barista, Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant, The Soup Spoon and Wolf Burgers) identified business cases for the challenge. Despite having different F&B concepts and varying levels of digitalisation, they shared common woes in lacking strong interoperability across digital solutions. These business challenges include manual reconciliation of voucher payments and accounting, and integration across functions in outlet management such as order fulfilment, reservation management and inventory.

A total of six teams from the Open Category and two teams from the Student Category submitted their entries for the challenge.

As technology becomes more ingrained amongst F&B businesses, we hope that our business owners can better harness the benefits of digitalisation to streamline operations, reduce overhead costs and drive sales. To enable seamless integration across different digital solutions, we strongly encourage our solution providers to consider developing open and well-documented APIs to facilitate interoperability efforts for our businesses.

Dialogue session with Mayor Low Yen Ling

Membership

On 24 October 2019, RAS together with Singapore Manufacturing Federation, Franchising and Licensing Association Singapore and Singapore Retailers Association organised a dialogue session with Mayor Ms. Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (SPS), Ministry of Manpower and Ministry of Education.

Ms Low Yen Ling spoke on the business case for creating family and age friendly workplaces. To address our tight labour market, businesses have to enable all workers, whether young or old, to continue working productively for as long as they are willing and able.

Since 1980, RAS has acted as a collective voice for the F&B industry and strives to advance the industry through various platforms such as bridging closer working relationships between businesses and government agencies, networking events for members, recognition and awards platforms and administering programmes to drive business success.

RAS currently has a membership of more than 450 members, representing 700 brands that operate approximately 3,600 outlets.
