What to Expect from Gamescom 2019

Since its inauguration in 2009, Gamescom has been the premier event for Europe’s games industry. Acting as both a professional business event and a public event, Gamescom is the biggest games industry event in the world, with approximately 370,000 attending last year’s event.

Part of the fun of events such as Gamescom is speculation - guessing what games may be revealed or teased.

Here are a few of the announcements we anticipate seeing more of at Gamescom 2019.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced in 2012, with a teaser trailer revealed in January 2013. Since then we’ve seen CD Projekt Red’s release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to wide acclaim. CD Projekt Red revealed a big chunk of Cyberpunk’s gameplay at last year’s Gamescom, and have already announced that they will have more Cyberpunk news at this year’s Gamescom. Cyberpunk is scheduled for an April 16, 2020 release. We anticipate seeing more gameplay footage at Gamescom. However, unlike previous footage, we expect to see more details on the open world of Night City. CD Projekt Red has also said that Cyberpunk will have non-violent options for solving missions, so we anticipate seeing a different type of gameplay at Gamescom.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

The long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally coming out on March 3, 2020. The game has been in some form of development for years, although director Tetsuya Nomura stated that work on Kingdom Hearts III took precedence. One of the more stranger design decisions revealed so far is that the FFVII Remake will be episodic. The first episode will cover the game’s opening in the city of Midgar. It would make sense to show off more gameplay footage of the FFVII Remake at Gamescom since we recently saw gameplay footage at E3 2019, and the game is only a few months away. Gamescom would be a great opportunity to show off more of the remake.

Need for Speed

It’s been two years since Need for Speed Payback was released to mixed reviews. A member of EA’s Dice team has already confirmed that Need for Speed will be releasing this year. However, we don’t know much about it. Gamescom will be the perfect opportunity to unveil the next game, especially since this is the 25th anniversary of the franchise. Most likely we’ll see the trailer then, as well as some gameplay footage. Since the game is still due out this year, expect a holiday release date as well.

Death Stranding

Death Stranding is the first game from Kojima Productions since 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Kojima Productions has already announced that we’ll see more of the game at Gamescom, but they haven’t said what exactly we’ll see. We’ve already seen some Death Stranding footage, but we haven’t seen a long, extended gameplay sequence. Gamescom would be a great place to show off more than a few minutes of gameplay and get people hyped for its November 8th release.

Google Stadia

Google Stadia is expected to be out in full force for Gamescom, unveiling even more about the cloud platform set for a November 2019 release. They have announced that they will be having a Stadia Connect streaming event on August 19th prior to Gamescom’s start and that Google Stadia will be available for hands-on demos. It’s likely they will have a previously announced game for play, such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Destiny 2. Google could also use Gamescom to show off a game that could be huge on Stadia - Football Manager 2020. Given the popularity of the sport worldwide, and the global audience that Gamescom attracts, showing the game at Gamescom would be a wise choice.

It’s likely that they will announce more games coming to the platform, both at launch and by the end of the year. Most of the titles announced for Stadia have been major AAA releases such as Doom and Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy XV, Borderlands 3, and the latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games. However, Stadia’s current library consists mostly of existing titles. If they could reveal some exclusive titles, as well as some smaller indie games, they could expand interest in their platform.
