WHAT IS AN INFINITIVE? The infinitive is the basic, unconjugated form of a verb, sometimes called the name of the verb. In English the infinitive is to + verb: to be, to see, to eat, etc. We are going to concentrate on the verbs with –ER endings. Most –er verbs follow this pattern at the present tense: Aimer (to like) We CONJUGATE the infinitive: • J’aime Nous Aimons Tu aimes Vous aimez Il/Elle aime Ils/Elles aiment The forms aime, aimes, aiment sound the same!
