What Does OpportunityLook Like?

2016 - 2017 Report To The Community

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept our deepest thanks and appreciation for your commitment and generous financial support of Saint Martin de Porres Academy. We are working hard to secure our future and strengthen our capacity to fulfill our mission to break the cycle of poverty through education and opportunity. The impact that the Academy has had on the lives of some of our community’s most disadvantaged children is nothing short of miraculous. It has been amazing to witness our students blossom from timid and often under-perform-ing 5th graders, to poised 8th graders who are prepared to thrive at presti-gious college preparatory high schools. It’s the most rewarding volunteer experience I’ve ever had, because I see

the results every time I walk through the doors. I invite you to visit and see for yourself! My fellow trustees and I work in a more hands-on fashion than you might find in most nonprofit organizations. We coach sports teams and volunteer after school. We tutor and meet annually with our graduates and their families. We help them complete financial aid forms for colleges, and every August, we present a scholarship to each of our middle school students and to the 90% of our graduates attending private high schools. This year, we will fulfill the 12-year commitment we made to our first 5th grade class -- the Class of 2017, who will graduate from college in the spring. I hope you will take a moment to celebrate the many achievements of the graduates whose successes are highlighted in this report. Please know that none of this would be possible without the generosity of caring individuals like you and the

strong support from the charitable and corporate foundations, civic clubs, organizations and the many local businesses listed herein. Your leadership helps provide the educational opportunities that result in success. Thank you,

New tool boxes for the Fix-it Club. Michael Dowley, Board of Trustees and Club Leader

I began my journey at Saint Martin de Porres Academy when we opened the school in 2005. As we welcomed our first little 5th graders into our building, I could barely wrap my head around the notion that everyone at SMPA believed that our students would graduate from college as members of the Class of 2017. It was the promise we made to them – a twelve-year commitment of education and opportunity. Thanks to our incredible volunteer leadership and to good people like you, it is the promise that we’ve made to each of our 193 students and graduates.

As President of the Academy for the past seven years, I have focused my efforts on strengthening and building a holistic learning environment that educates and supports the whole child. We are a learning organization. We know what it takes to provide the absolute best opportunity for our students to break the cycle of poverty. We give them the tools they need to thrive

in prestigious private high schools and in colleges and universities, all of which enculturates them into middle class life.

Working strategically to create a sustainable institution with a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning has been my greatest joy. At the Academy, we put just as much emphasis on what happens in the classroom as what happens in the music room, art class, the theater, at camp, on the field, a farm or a field trip exploring the sights of a new city. A focus on spiritual development and on experiential learning has become our hallmark. It is what sets us apart. It is what makes us a success. Children living in poverty come to us with resilience and grit. We teach them how to hone their skills as they discover and cultivate their gifts and talents. We give them the opportunity to change the trajectory of their lives and to be leaders in their communities. We open the window to possibility.

Thank you to those who have journeyed with us throughout these first formative years, and welcome to those who have only recently joined our family. Together, we will continue to make possible a world of opportunity for the children who need it most.

Sincerely,

William T. Kosturko, Chairman, Board of Trustees

A Message from the Chairman

Allison Rivera, PresidentSaint Martin de Porres Academy

A Message from the President

Leonard Rosenard, Class of 2027

Students learned about marine biology when the

entire school took a trip to Wood’s Hole on Cape Cod.

The New Haven Trauma Coalition reports that nearly 50% of 5th graders in the New Haven public schools suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Our holistic teaching model is steeped in the understanding that our students need to be heard, and they need to be encouraged, supported, valued and loved in order to learn. We give them that opportunity, and that’s how I know we will be successful in our mission to break the cycle of poverty through education and opportunity.

Trauma Informed Student-Centered Approach to Learning

At Saint Martin de Porres Academy, we’ve created a holistic and trauma-informed teaching model; one that provides a deeper learning experience for our students and one that is focused on both academic and social-emotional development. It is transformative for our students, who are thriving in private college preparatory high schools and prestigious colleges and universities across the country. We extend our school day to 10 hours and our school year to 11 months because that’s what it takes to prepare economically disadvantaged children for successful lives.

For most of us, it’s hard to imagine what it really means to be a child living in poverty. Children who live in poverty are often exposed to multiple adverse childhood experiences. If left unaddressed, these childhood traumas significantly affect a child’s ability to learn. Students who are exposed to two or more traumas are twice as likely to repeat a grade,

experience behavioral problems, become disengaged with schoolwork and suffer from chronic health problems like asthma, ADHD and obesity.

All incoming 5th graders spend a week in July working alongside specialists at North Shore Animal League America, developing social-emotional skills while learning about the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum.

Our Board of Trustees has made a strategic investment in our teaching infrastructure. We have divided our teaching staff into two pods; one for 5th and 6th grades and one for 7th and 8th. This structure incorporates the newest and best practices and will provide a permanent trauma-informed learning infrastructure for our students going forward.

The driving forces of our new pod structure are the social-emotional and academic needs of our

students. We work collaboratively with retired volunteer teachers, principals and mental health professionals whose collective teaching experience exceeds 250 years. They meet weekly with the teaching pods and our Curriculum Coordinator to implement targeted strategies to meet our students’ individual needs.

Our approach to education is not just unique, it works! We celebrate a:• 97% Attendance Rate• 98% Retention Rate• 100% High School Graduation Rate• 97% College Acceptance Rate

We will celebrate in earnest in May, when members of the Class of 2017 graduate from college. Thanks to all who help make the dream of a good education and a sound start in life a reality for the children who need it most!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kelly O’Leary, PrincipalSaint Martin de Porres Academy

“Traumatic life events like chronic illness or violence in the home, long-term unemployment for one or more parents, food insecurity and the threat of eviction because of rent burden create toxic stress in children.” Dr. Alice Forrester, CEO, Clifford Beers Clinic

Trustees were surprised at their May meeting when NewAlliance Foundation Executive Director, Kim Healy, and Managing Director, Maryann Ott, presented SMPA with a check for $20,000 and the Foundation’s prestigious Hi5 High Impact Literacy Award for our ELA Curriculum.

College tours are an important component of our GSP. Staff accompanied students on 13 college tours last year. Pictured on the next page (far right), volunteers from Links, Incorporated presented a workshop on interview skills for our graduates.

GRADUATE SUPPORT PROGRAM

Our unique and robust Graduate Support Program (GSP) is integral to the incredible results we have achieved. It is the vehicle through which we continue our 12-year commitment to mentor and to academically and financially support our students throughout their high school and college years. 123 of our graduates are navigating their academic journeys in high school and in colleges and universities across the country. GSP staff also work with our 7th and 8th graders who are preparing for the high school admissions process for a total of 162 students served.

We provide the scaffolding and advocacy our students need to break through the barriers of childhood trauma, academic delay and social and economic injustice. GSP staff monitor academic performance and provide:

• Tutoring• Assistance with high school and

college applications• SSAT and SAT preparation• Financial aid and personal counseling• High school and college visits

Incidental educational expenses add up to a significant sum for families living in poverty, so we also provide financial assistance for:

• Tuition• Uniforms• Books• Application and testing fees• Transportation• Musical instruments and athletic

equipment

Between the ages of 12 to 18, it is tempting for adolescents to give in to peer pressure; kids are making decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. That’s why our GSP is so important to our success. We help our students set goals based on their personal needs and guide them throughout their educational journeys. At times, our graduates are overwhelmed by the transition to high schools where they are often the economic and racial minority. 20-30 graduates come back to SMPA every day to take advantage of the resources provided by GSP staff and to get the academic and emotional supports they need to thrive at prestigious schools.

Our MissionSaint Martin de Porres Academy is a faith-based, NativityMiguel middle school that provides a tuition-free, extended day education for underserved girls and boys from low-income families in the New Haven area. We are an independent Catholic school committed to a belief in the dignity and worth of every person. We strive to provide each child with a promising start in life and to equip them to fulfill their academic potential while achieving spiritual and social maturity. We welcome children of all faiths, races and cultures.

Our VisionThe vision of Saint Martin de Porres Academy is to break the cycle of poverty through education and opportunity. Our goal is to provide urban boys and girls the opportunity to choose a quality education that will allow them to live up to their full potential. At the Academy, we promote more than academic excellence - we cultivate personal responsibility, social skills and leadership, balanced with a strong spiritual foundation and a recognition of the need to serve others.

SMPA Honor CodeI am a child of God. I will be truthful, honest and respectful. I will work to the best of my ability to develop the talents that God has given me. I will endeavor to share my gifts and talents to make my family, my school and my community a place of justice and peace.
