AN EXHIBITION illustrating the im-pact of theFirst World Waron thetownof Cirencester and its residents is to bestaged at Corinium Museum from Au-gust 16 until September 14.

The exhibition is part of a wider pro-ject entitled Cirencester Commemorateswhich has received a grant of 34,700from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).The project brings organisations inthe town together to mark 100 yearssince the start of the First World Warthrough art, theatre, music and thewritten word.

Extensive research by members ofCirencester Archaeological & Histori-cal Society has revealed the personalhistories of many of those commemo-rated on the towns two war memori-als. A further four memorials have also

been identified: to former pupils of theGrammar School; the Church LadsBrigade; pupils of Oakley Hall School;and staff and students at the RoyalAgricultural College (now university).Individual memorials and graves inWatermoor Church and ChestertonCemetery were also discovered.

Research in national archives and inthe pages of theStandardhas revealedheroic and harrowing tales of bravery,courage and heart-breaking loss. Thelives of those who served and the livesof those who fought and survived theconflict have equal significance in thehistory of the town, all of them sup-ported by those who remained at home.

Graves and memorials on foreign soilmaintained by the Commonwealth WarGravesCommissionidentifythe course

of the battles fought byCirencester: Thiepval, TynMenin Gate and countlessin Flanders, Turkey and MAileen Anderson, chairmasaid History never ends. SSANGYONG is the oldestand fourth largest automotive
