Help at hand for young people whoare now searching for their rst jobWITH GCSE and A-level resultsout this month, young people inStroud are being encouraged tothink about how their first experi-ences in the world of work couldlead to even the unlikeliest of career paths – with help at handthrough the local Jobcentre Plus.

Some of the UK’s most well-known celebrities had unlikelystarts to their careers as revealedby the Department for Work andPension’s (DWP) #firstjobs cam-paign– Davina McCallworked asasales assistant, Lenny Henry wasa welder and Myleene Klass sur-veyed rivers.

Now the Government is encour-aging young people to make themost of the summer by gainingskills in the world of work whichcould help them secure their first job, including through Govern-ment schemes such as work ex-perience, apprenticeships andsector-specific training.

Youth unemployment is now

127,000 lower than it was in 2010,and across the country last sum-mer, around 100,000 more peoplestarted a new job compared toearlier on in the year – includingyoung people for the first time af-ter leaving education.

Karen Hulme from Stroud Job-centre Plus said: “Entering theworld of work can be dauntingfor some people, which is why wewant tomakesureyoung peopleinStroud have the skills and experi-ence they need to get off benefitsand into a job.

“Young people often tell us theycan’t get a job without work ex-perience and they can’t get workexperience without a job. That iswhy we introduced our work ex-perience scheme to give people ataste of the world of work whichcould open the door to other jobsand careers.”There’s plenty of help and ad-vice on things like work experi-ence and skills training avail-

able through Jobcentre Plus. TheGovernment has also massivelyexpanded work experience, chang-ing the rules so that young people(aged 18-24) on Jobseeker’s Allow-ance can now do up to two monthswork experience without it affect-ing their benefits.

The Government also increasedapprenticeships and through sec-tor-based work academies youngpeople can get sector-specifictraining in areas like hospitality,along with work experience place-ments and a guaranteed job inter-view.

Karen’s top five tips for young jobseekers in Stroud:

1. Give your CV a makeover –Keep it short – a maximum of twosides of A4is enough. Tryto tailorit to the job.

2. Go online – create a profile on

Drivers missing themark when brakingTHE accuracy of facts andfigures in the Highway Codehas been called into questionafter research by the RACshowed that many driversunderestimate official stop-ping distances.

As part of the organisa-tion’s Report on Motoring2014, drivers were asked toidentify the Highway Code’sstated stopping distancesfrom different speeds, but themajority “seriously underes-timated” the figures.

However, a survey by RightDriver of 1,000 AdvancedDriving Instructors (ADIs)revealed the vast major-

ity strongly believe that theofficial braking distanceshave become irrelevant andshould be updated.

While the RAC’s study de-

fined the 96-metre 70mphstopping distance as 24 carlengths (four metres per car),only 16 per cent of respond-ents identified the answer.More than one in ten (11 percent) guessed 17 car lengths

(68 metres) , 32 per centplumped for ten car lengths(40 metres), and 18 per centimagine the distance is justtwo car lengths or less.

However, ADIs argue thatadvances in car tyres, brakesand active braking safetysystems mean that a new carwill stop much faster thancars used in the 1960s to setthe figures in the Highway

Code.A DVSA spokesman said:“The Department for Trans-port is not planning a reviewof the Highway Code.” Now is the summ
