The week of October 16, 2016 Are You Fickle? I am thinking about the word fickle. It is a strange-sounding word that is rarely used by my circle of friends and acquaintances. The word fickle is defined as changing frequently, especially in regards to ones loyalties, interest or affection.I think this is especially true in the world of sports. By nature, people cling to winners because they want to be identified with a proven winner. Believe this or not, I have seen this in my own life and experiences as a preacher working for local churches of Christ. Those who were my best friends and biggest supporters become my biggest critics, and some who were critical of me became supporters of me. How do I explain this, you ask? Human nature, is that the answer? I guess so, because fickleness is a human trait. People are constantly jumping on and off the band wagon. This Saturday, the Tennessee Volunteers play the Alabama Crimson Tide in Knoxville. The Volunteers were undefeated at 5-0 until they lost in double overtime to Texas A & M last week. After being undefeated for the first five weeks, if they lose this Saturday to the Tide, you will see Some jumping off the bandwagon. Why is that the case? The answer is simple: they are fickle! Peoples loyalties can be shallow, meaning of little depth. For me, win, lose, or draw, I am a Volunteer Fan, which in the grand scheme of things is not a big deal. On the other hand, human beings can be fickle in the areas that do matter, such as fickle friends. A man of too many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother(Proverbs 18:24). (“It is better to have one good, faithful friend than numerous unreliable ones, wrote Allen P. Ross.) In addition, the wise man said, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother(Proverbs 18:24). Why is it that having a friend who sticks closer than a brother is such a rare thing? Because people are fickle. When I think about fickle people, I think about those who claimed to be loyal to the Lord Jesus. For instance, when Jesus entered Jerusalem, As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. As soon as He was approaching, near the de- scent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting, Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the high- est!(Luke 19:38). Continued from inside . . .

Sad to say, a short time later, the Lord was put on trial for crimes He did not commit. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was publically humili-ated, beaten to the point of death, forced to carry His cross to Calvary where He was nailed to a cross. The Roman official Pilate offered the people a choice: Jesus or the criminal – murderer -- Barabbas, and they chose Barabbas over the only truly righteous man who ever lived, proving once again just how fickle hu-man beings can be. One thing is certain, however. Living the life of a Christian for a life time will separate the pretenders from the truly committed and loyal disciples. The apos-tle Paul said to his co-worker Timothy, “Make every effort to come to me soon; for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica (II Timothy 4:9-10). I have had the good pleasure to work full-time with five local churches. I am familiar with several other congregations. All of those churches have members who have been faithful for as long as I can remember, some longer than fifty years. On the other hand, all those churches have had many who were counted among the membership who lived haphazard Christian lives and some who became completely unfaithful. The Lord said, "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Nothing less than faithful until death will satisfy God’s expecta-tions of His people. Therefore, while fickleness is normal and almost expected in this life, we see it so often that It has be-come a normal human characteristic. However, we must realize those who are fickle rarely have even one good friend or enjoy a happy and satisfied marriage, and indifference usually characterizes their relationship with the Lord and His church. This being true, we should examine ourselves to see if we are showing any signs of fickle behavior. If so, we should pray asking the Lord to help us to overcome it.
