FINANCE Advisory COUNCIL Two trustees and two appointees

We are happy to announce the two new members of the Finance advisory Council members; Michael Donofrio and Vincent Pascal. They serve alongside the two parish trustees: Norma Ytuarte and Sheila Mullan.

In the name of the whole parish, Monsignor Sandi thanks Mary Ruth and Steve Bujno for the many years they served here as parish financial advisors.

PARISH Advisory COUNCIL

A Teen, A Single, A Senior, A Married couple, A Latino(a) [Sorry, we could not conduct this event last week.]

TODAY one of our parish children is scheduled to “(s)elect by lots” the six members of the new parish advisory body from names suggested to the Pastoral Staff (without the participation of Monsignor Sandi).

We are all grateful to the members of the previous Parish Council: Mike Griffin, James Hulak, Mary Ruth, Steve Bujno, Suzanne Craig, Katty Velasquez Vargas, Jeanne Dennison, Mark Pila, JoAnne Pollio, Heidi Benzinger, Dave Cervini and Melanie Watanabe.

Pastors to Meet in Convention Monsignor will join his fellow pastors and His Eminence Monday, Oct. 17 through Oct. 21, at the Annual Pastors Convention at the Breakers-on-the-Ocean Hotel in Spring Lake, New Jersey. He returns very late Friday.

Special Collection for Holy Trinity’s

Liturgical Music We are having our second annual Special Collection for Holy Trinity’s Liturgical Music. Your donations will help not only with our exceptional Schola Cantorum that sings weekly at the 11:15 Mass, but also with the glorious music featured at Christmas and Easter. We ask for your usual generosity. There are special envelopes available at the entrance to the church.

“Sit Down” and Be Counted

As required by the Archdiocese each autumn, we shall count the number of men, women and children who participate at Masses TODAY and next weekend, and send the average attendance number to the Chancery Office. Last year 1050 parishioners participated at Sunday Mass regularly.

Now here’s a heartwarming story the pastor received about our parish you will never forget, believe me! We received the following shed a tear, said a prayer. Hi, I am not a Catholic, although I was probably supposed to be. I live on the West Coast. In 1930 my father was left in the rear pew of your church. It was on March 3, 1930, and the NY Foundling Hospital guessed he may have been 2 months old. I never knew him because he died when I was two months old in 1950. I plan to visit your church in October just to sit in the last pew. Even though I never got to know my father, of course I will always love him. What are your hours and would you have any information on that time period? Now, I know it is a long shot (because I am 66), but maybe someone else in the parish knew something or Margaret Dempsey still has family in the area.

DRESS by Paul Turner Our Sunday best used to represent the finest we owned. Time was church was formal, and folks dressed that way. Now it’s different. People dome to church wearing everything from tuxedos to cutoffs, from formal gowns to sandals. Society clings to few rules about dress. Under the roof of God’s house, some do’s and don’ts prevail, but there is no telling how people will dress. The advance of casual wear has succeeded in many parts of society, not just churches. Even when invitations specify formal wear, business clothes or casual dress, respondents may remain confused. Expectations for Sunday dress vary. A younger participant’s outfit reveals some flesh. Some see no problem; others find it scandalous. Some cannot afford nice clothes; others are coming from work or stop on their way to play. At its best, the variety of church dress displays the universality of the call to worship. At its worst it shows carelessness and confusion. The harrumph-o-meter generally short circuits when a worshipper, who arrived expecting a place in the pew, steps in as a communion minister or reader. Having communion offered to you from someone dressed in shorts and a grunge t-shirt may shake the most fervent worshipper’s belief in the Body of Christ. However, ministers generally prefer to dress right. Then duty calls them unprepared, they do their best with hearts of faith, seeking to serve, not to offend. When we prepare for church, charity demands consideration in our dress and moderation in our judgment.

San Lucas Evangelista Octubre 18
