COMMUNITY CORNER

Building walls seems to be one of the main topics of the day. A wall can be used to keep things in or keep things out; for painting murals of beauty or ugly words; to keep us from harm or destroy a relationship, or to give ivy a chance to climb and inspire alma maters.

All this to say, many of the residents of GHBC spend time and energy working on removing walls. We are interested in reaching out to members of our immediate community and those who live beyond our campus. We donate several hundred bags of clothing to the homeless; knit sweaters and blankets for children around the world; collect Box Tops to give to Elementary Schools in or neighborhood so they will be able to purchase needed supplies and equipment; put together lunches for school children in order for them to have food over the weekends; put together mesh bags for use by those who are distributing food to others; collect eye glasses to give that others might have better sight; collect plastic caps in order to raise funds to furnish wheelchairs for children; buy paper angels in order to purchase Thanksgiving dinner for families at a nearby shelter; serve as mentors and/or teachers on every level in various nearby schools; provide cookies for prisoners; and support our Green Team in its efforts to get us involved in its recycling efforts to serve humanity.

Our Board of Trustees has a committee whose main function is to think and plan as they would say, Beyond These Walls! GHBC has always been, and will always be, a community that reaches out to others!

Dottie Moser, Resident

TRIPS AND OUTINGS

By Popular Demand!

Join us on Thursday, December 5, for a day trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) to see the special exhibit, “Edward Hopper and the American Hotel.” This exhibit will be the only one on the East Coast. Participants, of course, may see all public exhibits and enjoy lunch on their own in the museum’s attractive modern restaurants.

Edward Hopper is well known for his paintings of dwellings—houses, apartments buildings, and hotels. He traveled through the United States and Mexico often staying in tourist houses or rooms for rent, Hopper was deeply familiar with how Americans make themselves at home. Culturally probing and formally beguiling, the selected paintings and works on paper explore America’s hotel consciousness and cultural landscape in the early to mid-20th century. (VMFA web site).

We have a motor coach for 48 travelers from GHBC, GHA, GHAH, and the Priority Club, and the vehicle is equipped with a wheel chair lift. (Note: residents in wheel chairs must notify their social worker of the trip and must be accompanied by a companion.) We plan to depart GHBC at 8:00 a.m. (GHA about 15 minutes later). We’ll arrive in Richmond at the museum about 10:00 a.m. Departure is planned for 3:30 p.m.

This outing is sponsored by the GHBC Trips and Outings Committee and the Fine Arts Committee. The cost will be approximately $55.00, which includes the cost of admission to the Hopper exhibit.

To register for the trip or for more information call: Carolyn Buttolph, 703-842-3177, email [email protected]

MOUNT VERNON GERMAN BAND CONCERT

Join us on Tuesday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium for a performance from the Mount

Vernon German Band.

BEN WILMOT PIANO CONCERT

In a concert last May, Ben played some of his personal favorites – and shared amusing anecdotes about how they came to be written. At the end, the audience clamored for more. So by popular demand, Ben is returning with a new collection of songs and stories on Wednesday, September 25, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. Come ear ly to get a good seat.

Many of us like to gather at the piano in the Rotunda as Ben Wilmot plays popular songs by composers including Berlin, Gershwin, and Carmichael. Ben taught himself to play "by ear", listening to records on the family's wind-up Victrola and picking out tunes on their upright piano. Through his medical career and now in retirement, Ben has continued to learn new songs and entertain family and friends with his wide repertoire. WHATNOT SHOP

The WhatNot Shop will be open on Thursday, September 26, from 12:30 - 3:00 p.m. Everything except the furniture will be 50% off. Come on down for some great bargains.

SPIRITUAL COMPANIONS

Spiritual Companions will meet Thursday, September 26, at 3:30 p.m. in the Formal Parlor. Read Chapter 1 and 2 of Parker Palmer's book, Listen to Y our Life. Highlight your questions and comments and bring them with you. All are welcome, you don't need a book to participate.

DANCE BREAK FRIDAY

All staff and residents are invited to join us in the Rotunda on Friday, September 27, at 3:00 p.m. as we welcome Celeste the Fiddle Diva back to Goodwin House. Wear your dancing shoes and bring a friend.

Flora GHBC Clinic Nurse and A Matter of Balance Instructor, and Sherry,

the GHBC Fitness Manager and SAIL Instructor, will be there to help answer your questions about Falls Prevention.

Thank you to all the Stepping to the BEACH participants. We are so very proud of you! Together we have taken over 8 MILLION Steps!!! We definitely reached the Beach. Research has found that walking is one of the best possible exercises you can do to maintain your health and protect your balance. This was our first summer walking program, and it has been a great

success thanks to all your hard work. Looking forward to celebrating with you all. Look for an email invitation with all the details of our pool party. Great Job!

What to Do If You Fall

Update: Last week we pr inted an ar ticle from NIH with tips on best practices if you have a fall and the safest way to get up. We apologize if this caused any confusion on GHI’s practice for falls. Here are a few guidelines if you fall in your apartment or on GHBC property:

Do not attempt to get up yourself

If you have a PET you should activate it, use the emergency call light in your apartment or knock your phone off the hook to summon help. If / when able, dial “0” and ask for a nurse to assist you.

If you fall in a common area do not get up on your own or if you see someone else fall ask them to wait for help before getting up.

But sharpies are used by many artists to create colorful works of art. Create a bright multi-colored work of art on canvas using Sharpies! 1:00 p.m. – Art Film – The Italian Renaissance – In this Great Courses lecture series, Professor Kenneth Bartlett covers the entire history of the Renaissance. Today’s lectures are Petrarch and the Foundation of Humanism, and The Recovery of Antiquity. Tuesday, September 24 10:00 a.m. – Ceramics – Gargoyles – Continue to create a variety of small gargoyles. We will also glaze pieces fired in the kiln from the previous week. 1:00 p.m. – Ink Brush Painting – Artist Resident Frank Spink has studied and practiced Chinese Brush Painting for over forty years and will teach you basic techniques of this ancient art form that dates back to 4000 B.C. Come relax and learn the beauty of ink brush painting. Wednesday, September 25 10:00 a.m. – Jewelry Making – Resident artist and jewelry expert Sandy Bohannon will teach you all there is to know about making a beautiful piece of jewelry! This class is for beginners and advanced jewelry makers. Thursday, September 26 9:30 a.m. – Painting with Sharpies – In today’s class, mix two different mediums (acrylic paint and Sharpie ink markers) onto canvas! Mixed media is when you combine two or more different mediums to create a work of art. First apply a background color onto canvas, and then go over it using Sharpie pens. The different visual effects are endless. 2:00 p.m. – Woodcarving – Master woodcarving instructors Joel and Mike teach basic and advanced woodcarving techniques. If you have a favorite animal that you would like to create from wood, Joel and Mike will show you how fun and easy it is. Friday, September 27 10:00 a.m. – Graphite Pencil Drawing – Using specialized solid graphite pencils, learn basic shading and texture techniques while working from a still life of your choice. 1:00 p.m. – Art and the Environment – The discussion today will center around the Phillips Collection exhibition Global Displacement: The Warmth of Other Suns.
