UPCOMING HOLIDAY SERVICES IN THE CHAPEL
Sunday, December 31, at 10:30 a.m., we will reflect on our annual First Sunday after Christmas readings
and sing Christmas carols once again. Our readings center around the Gospel of John’s opening verses as
it proclaims, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Our weekly 10:00 a.m. Wednesday Holy Eucharist service continues throughout this period as it does
throughout the year. The service includes scripture, a brief message, the Holy Eucharist, and generally
corporate and individual prayers for healing.
GREEN TEAM FILM: PLANET EARTH II - ISLANDS
The original Planet Earth of 2006 was the first natural
documentary series made in high definition (HD). Ten
years later the BBC created Planet Earth II, using
newer technologies, including ultra HD and aerial
drone technology. The Green Team is very happy to
open our 2017 film series with this outstanding new
series, Planet Earth II, hosted also by Sir David
Attenborough. Episode One, “Islands,” takes viewers
to remote islands from the Seychelles to Antarctica,
including some featuring extreme living conditions.
We enjoy the 3-toed sloth living safely on its Caribbean island home as well as iguana hatchlings of the
Galapagos who must run a snake gauntlet for their lives the moment they are born. The last 10 minutes
illustrate how intrepid photographers managed to film the most dangerous and challenging scenes.
Wednesday, January 3, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. One hour, BBC, 2016.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING
Influenza (Flu) and Norovirus are contagious diseases that are prevalent from October to April and can
cause serious health problems. Both viruses can be spread through improper hand washing. Everyone is at
risk of contracting these viruses. Regular and proper hand washing is one of the best ways to remove germs,
reduce the risk of getting sick, and preventing the spread of disease. Please join our Staff Educator, Dee
Evans, on Monday, January 22, from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Rotunda to learn more about proper hand
washing and how you can protect yourself.
LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION
2017 has been celebrated as the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, which was begun by Catholic monk
and scholar Martin Luther in Wittenberg, Germany. In commemoration of this historic development, Rick
Steves produced an interesting film that will be shown in the Auditorium at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January
9. Mr. Steves explores the lasting effects of this schism from then-accepted doctrine, resulting in the
creation of numerous Protestant churches and, over time, also affecting Catholic doctrine and
practices. Along the way, Mr. Steves also provides an interesting travelogue of the historic sites.

SATURDAY EVENING MOVIE- AN AMERICAN IN PARIS
Once a struggling painter, opportunistic American artist Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) now lives in the City of
Light, enjoying the patronage of a well-heeled, amorous American gallery owner (Nina Foch) -- and swiftly
falling for a willowy French street urchin (Leslie Caron). Trouble is, the object of Mulligan's affection also
happens to be engaged to a famous French singer (Georges Guétary). This tour de force movie musical
nabbed seven Oscars. Saturday, January 6, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. NR, (1951) 1hr 55min

COMMUNITY CORNER
Well, it’s that time of the year again. As the new year makes a fast approach, we will find
ourselves preparing for its arrival. Many will be listening to or singing Auld Lang Syne
while toasting in the year 2018 with a glass of champagne. Did you know that Auld Lang
Syne is a Scottish poem that was written by Robert Burns in the 18th century? Strict translation is “old
long since” and means “time gone by.” It was not originally written to be associated with New Year’s
celebrations. The band leader Guy Lombardo is credited with popularizing this song and making it a New
Years tradition. Lombardo heard the song as a youth in his home town of London, Ontario. Over the
years it became a signature of his and his brothers’ famous band known as “The Royal Canadians”.
In a nutshell, “Auld Lang Syne” is basically about remembering friends from the past. The reason why
this song works so well for singing at the end of the year is that, when good people come and go in our
lives, it is worth taking a moment to raise a glass to remember those who should not be forgotten.
Although we do not know what the year 2018 has in store for us, we honor our friendships and look
forward to our future journey with our fellow residents at GHBC. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
