COMMUNITY CORNER

Last week we were invited to a Town Hall meeting on our GHBC Channel 2. This monthly meeting with the Executive Director has a history that is interesting to share. When

Goodwin House West was beginning its legacy, the then Executive Director, David Burke, invited residents to a Fireside Chat and named it “High Tea”. He would meet with a few residents in the old living room and offer coffee or tea during an informal chat. As the number of residents grew and Linda Lateana assumed the role of Executive Director, the “High Tea” was moved to the Atrium, then to the Top of the West. When attendance outgrew that space, it was moved to the Auditorium. The importance of having this monthly meeting was obvious to Linda. The idea of a High Tea was kept in that sweets, coffee and tea were still served. Justin Carwile, now Executive Director, is equally committed to continuing these gatherings.

One of the requests by resident groups involved in providing ideas for additional use of technology at GHBC, was that the Council Meetings and the Town Hall be easily available to all residents by televising them on our in-house Channel 2. Thus, those who were physically or otherwise unable to come to the Auditorium, could be kept informed and involved. Guess what? This is exactly what we are trying to do now! It is certainly not how we want it to be (with distancing and masks), but we are constantly being challenged to learn how to keep our communications open under much less than desirable circumstances. Let’s be sure and keep ourselves aware of the opportunities to participate and to be informed. The day will come when you can sit next to your fellow residents and raise your voice in unison. Until then, in the meantime, watch Channel 2, use our website daily, and keep in touch!

COMMUNITY NEWS AND UPDATES

WEAR YOUR MASKS

We keep trying to emphasized the importance of using masks whenever you leave you apartments, as well as the fact that your wearing the mask protects others around you. You are protecting others in the community, and you depend on their mask wearing to protect you.

Remember to wash your cloth mask every day you wear it. You can hand wash your cloth mask or just throw it in the washing machine. Hot water and soap will kill the virus. Remember to wear your mask over your nose and mouth at all times when in public areas.

HAPPY HOUR WEDNESDAYS

Enjoy your drinks on the Bistro Patio while listening to the sweet sounds of Guitarist David Andrew Smith.

Each Wednesday in July, David will be playing on the Bistro Patio from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Grab a friend and a drink from the BC Lounge and soak in the summer sun. Have a song request? Email it to Elizabeth Whitehouse at [email protected]

CHAPLANCY AND CPE NEWS

DAILY SPIRITUAL DEVOTIONALS/REFLECTIONS FROM CPE

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students continue to offer daily spiritual devotionals/reflections through the summer. Tune in to Channel 2 at 11:30 a.m. Monday – Friday to see them. Catch up with the videos you may have missed by going to the resident website. Links to each video are posted on the GHBC Resident Website under Spiritual Life/Clinical Pastoral Education Program and Coming Events. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. We hope you enjoy getting to know them.

CPE STUDENTS - ONE-ON-ONE VISITS

CPE Students are now able to visit with some residents, one-on-one, outside, at a distance. After getting to know many of you over the telephone, the students are very much looking forward to connecting in-person. If you want to connect in person, please email Liz Pomerleau, the Director of GH CPE, at [email protected].

SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMITTEE

GHBC Chapel Offerings and Spiritual Life Support Many thanks to the many generous residents, staff members, and family members who contribute to the GHBC Chapel Fund, whether to “Chapel Donations” or for general spiritual life activities (such as the annual Senior Quest series). The gifts by check and cash are appreciated greatly, particularly when so many of you are contributing to other charitable causes during this unique period in our lives. Because some of you have expressed a past desire to earn “points” for your credit card purchases, just a reminder that you can make one-time or even periodic donations to any of the Foundation’s funds—of which the GHBC Chapel Fund is one—by credit card and earn more dollars for your generous contributions. See the GHBC Foundation page at goodwinhouse.org/giving for more information. You can donate securely at https://www.goodwinhouse.org/giving/donate/ or by calling the Foundation at 703-824-1200. Just remember to designate the fund to which you wish the contribution to be allocated.

The Spiritual Life Committee continues the dialogue on racism this week by facilitating small group discussions via Zoom on this Monday, July 6, at 2:00 p.m. Residents have an oppor tunity to reflect on and respond to the Conversation on Racism between CEO Rob Liebreich and Board member Tammy Mann and the Listening Session on Racism offered by a panel of Black staff and residents. The hope is that suggestions will arise for how to move forward in our dealing with racism. Those who missed viewing these earlier panels still have an opportunity to see them online by going to the resident website. To receive an invitation to the Zoom discussion groups send an e-mail to Tony Tambasco at [email protected].

In times to come, when I think about living at Goodwin House during the Pandemic, I am likely to open a red folder and sift through the drawings and paintings it contains. Creating drawings and paintings hasn’t been a part of my life since elementary school, and it surprises me that I actually have something to look at. But through the weeks of isolation and distancing, I have been introduced to Manet’s Impressionism and Cezanne’s watercolors and Seurat’s pointillism and been encouraged to try my hand at these techniques. It will be even more of a surprise when I look at the art and occasionally think – that wasn’t too bad.

This new perspective of art came about with the arrival of Adrienne Wyman, the Goodwin House Creative Arts Coordinator. Adrienne arrived in early April, as we were all adjusting to social distancing, wearing masks, and limiting the number of people in a room to 10 or less. I quickly learned to rush down to the Art Center on Monday mornings and choose a class. I also soon learned that there are many accomplished artists at Goodwin House and I better keep my eyes and my mind on my own small project, or I could become discouraged. But, with guidance from Adrienne, and concentration on the details, I could escape the world of the Pandemic and enjoy the world of Art. Eleanor Karro

FROM THE HEALTH COMMITTEE

GHBC has had a Confidant Program for some time. Here is how it works! You may select one or two confidants who live at Goodwin House, whom you have entrusted to inform residents and friends when you have moved, even temporarily, from your apartment to a hospital, or another level of care, such as the 2nd or 3th floor. As has always been the case, you can instruct them to let your friends and neighbors know your whereabouts, and if you wish, your illness. The program has always been designed to give each resident the opportunity to release whatever information they want their friends and neighbors to know. You and your confidant should discuss exactly what you wish to be disclosed.

HIPAA prohibits Goodwin House from releasing medical information to anyone but your chosen Power of Attorney. If you want specific medical information shared with your friends and neighbors you must discuss the specifics with your Confident.

The Health Committee strongly recommends that every resident select one confidant, or in the case of a spouse or significant other, to select an additional confidant, in the event one confidant might not be available. Copies of the Confidant letter may be secured at the Reception Desk. Further questions should be directed to the Director of Social Work, Barbara Fornoff, who is in charge of the program. Please sign up soon if you have not already done so. Nancy Randolph, Chair

AROUND THE COMMUNITY

Barbara Kell and Tom Dorrier moved into Crossroads apartment 906 on June 9.

Tom grew up in Old Hickory, Tennessee, and graduated from DuPont High School there. After earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1966, he went to work for DuPont. He was soon drafted into the Army, went to OCS, and spent 2 years in Yuma, Arizona. Upon discharge from the Army, he went back to DuPont but decided that he wanted to go to law school. He attended the University of Richmond Law School and graduated in 1975. After practicing law in Richmond for a while, he came to the D.C. area to work in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) construction program, where he could

use both of his degrees. He retired from Metro’s legal department in 2003, and he and Barbara moved to Madison, Virginia, to build their dream house. Tom describes himself as a “news and politics junkie.” Before the arrival of COVID, he played tennis 3 times a week. He has been active in the Madison literacy council and enjoys tutoring, especially in math. He also likes reading and movies.

Barbara grew up in Bristol, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She worked at UVA hospital for a while and then joined the Office of Economic Opportunity in a rural initiative to provide health care in Buckingham County, Virginia. Along the way, she became a nurse practitioner. When she and Tom married and he attended law school, she worked, and they lived a “hippy existence” in a log cabin halfway between Buckingham and Richmond. In D.C. she first worked at Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease and later in student health at Georgetown University until retirement in 2004. She and Tom also raised two sons and now have five granddaughters, all under age seven. Courses to become a Master Gardener enhanced her concerns about the environment, and she knows she will miss having a garden. In retirement, she has volunteered in a free clinic and enjoys reading and exercising. She is eager for our pool to re-open.

LET’S GET FIT TOGETHER

Thank you for joining the Summer Stepping Program. We are coming up on our last week of tracking steps. Times flies when you are having fun.

Please take time this week to write your daily steps in your tracking sheet. Also, if you have not already done so, write your name, daily steps goal, and total steps at the top of the sheet.

Please hand in your sheet even if you did not track your steps every day. Whatever amount of steps you have taken is still a great accomplishment and will add to our total steps as a group!

To complete the program, turn in your steps and nutrition goal tracking sheets the week of July 13-17, 2020. The forms can be dropped off at the fitness center or emailed to Sherry at [email protected].
