e company behind a lakefront commercial-residential development in Nelson is now pre-selling units in its rst phase, with an eye to beginning construction in the spring.

e rst eight units in Nelson Landing start at $529,000 for two bed-rooms, said Allard Ock-eloen of Storm Moun-tain Developments.

at’s a 25 per cent increase over prices announced a year ago, which Ockeloen says is due both to a rise in construction costs as well an increase in the size of the units as a re-sult of a re-design.

Nelson Landing will be built on the old Koo-tenay Forest Products site. Development will be phased in over ten years, and if 40 units have been built by then, the phase-in period will be extended to 20 years to complete up to 265 units.

Trail hair salons are adding another di-mension to styles with a pink streak in sup-port of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Luca Hair Studio is among the businesses participating in Streak for Cancer. For its third year, the salon is holding its annual pink streak party on Oct. 28.

“It’s a really nice way for the ladies to in-teract,” said salon manager Stacey Chartres. “It almost feels like a bit of a night out of pampering and the streak is really fun.”

e party kicks o at 6:30 p.m. but for those who have other commitments that night, the salon is also booking appoint-ments (in advance) that day.

Sta o er a semi-permanent streak, washable hair chalk or hair makeup and even a miniature manicure to make a state-ment. For a minimum $10 donation, clients can take part in the fun initiative to show their support for women facing breast can-cer, a disease that a ects over 3,000 women in the province every year.

“I think everybody has been touched by cancer at least once,” said Chartres. “I just

think it’s a great way to bring awareness.”In 1986, breast cancer patients had a 53

per cent chance of survival, according to the society. But thanks to an investment in breast cancer research, the survival rate is now 88 per cent.

“We’ve de nitely come a long way,” noted Allison McCarthy, West Kootenay Bound-ary revenue development coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society.

e Cancer Society is working to increase the survival rates for all cancers, including breast cancer, by educating the public on prevention. ere are simple lifestyle chang-es that women can make to help reduce their risk, including regular mammograms and choosing to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

“When breast cancer is caught early, the chances of successful treatment are better,” says McCarthy, “and regular mammograms are the most reliable early detection tool.

“Another way to prevent breast cancer, is to reduce your risks by not smoking, main-taining a healthy body weight and making sure you eat well and stay active.”

roughout the month of October, salons across the province will be fundraising for the cause; Luca is not the only one in Trail taking part.

Aria Art of Hair held its event early this

month but is still o ering pink streaks to clients receiving colour treatment. Menza Luna kicks o its party Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and All About Hair is signed up for the entire month of October.

Money raised supports services that can be accessed out of the Trail o ce, which just moved to a new, smaller downtown loca-tion.

“We have always been strongly commit-ted to living within our means and provid-ing responsible leadership and stewardship of donor dollars,” said McCarthy. “With that said, our new o ce move has allowed us to bene t in cost savings. We can now put more money towards our mission and con-tinue to have an o ce presence within Trail and the West Kootenay (region).

e new location is in the South Koote-nay Business Centre at 835 Spokane St. in downtown Trail.

Support services include:• Cancer Information Service (CIS): a

national, toll-free service available to cancer patients, caregivers, families and friends, the general public and healthcare professionals. To access CIS call toll-free at 1-888-939-3333.

• Financial Support Program and the

Financial Support Drug Program: limited, short-term nancial assistance to cover a portion of clients’ cancer-related transpor-tation and accommodation expenses. Also, through a partnership with the BC Cancer Agency, the Trail o ce can assist clients with a portion of the cost of selected prescription medications that manage symptoms related to cancer treatment.

• Wig room: women can browse a selec-tion of wigs and various headwear including toques, turbans and scarves. e wig room is a free service and helps women living with cancer nd wigs when they lose their hair as a result of cancer treatment.

• Community services locator (CSL): a directory that helps cancer patients, caregiv-ers and healthcare providers nd the ser-vices they need.

• Accommodations: the Canadian Can-cer Society operates four reasonably priced lodges in proximity to cancer treatment cen-tres in Vancouver, the Southern Interior, on the Island and Northern B.C.

• CancerConnection: a service that con-nects people living with cancer with trained volunteers who listen, provide hope, o er encouragement and share ideas for coping all from their unique perspective as some-one who’s been there.

Trail and Castlegar both win at CIB competitionCastlegar has once

again received high honours at the Commu-nities in Bloom National Symposium. During the event held on Oct. 3 in Kamloops Castlegar Communities in Bloom was again awarded with five blooms, the high-est bloom rating. They also placed second in the Class of Champions (medium population size) category, the sec-ond highest level in the competition. “I’m really pleased,” said Castlegar CIB president Darlene Kalawsky. “We have a

fabulous team. We are very enthusiastic and we are definitely going to keep moving forward.”

In addition Castle-gar received the Natura Tidiness Award, an out-standing achievement award given to only one community in the entire competition.

If those accomplish-ments weren’t enough, they also received a special mention for the White Gardens on Co-lumbia Ave.

Castlegar residents Mac and Kathy Gregory received the Community

Champion Award for the province of BC. The Gregorys are not only active CIB participants, but also spearheaded the flag pole project at the Castlegar Robson interchange and spend countless hours cleaning

up city streets. Over the summer,

trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the pri-vate sector, including vol-unteer efforts, in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conser-vation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.

Trail takes top spot in international com-petition

Trail has reinvented itself as a sustainable, liveable city but hasn’t lost site of its industrial roots, if its international win in the Communities in Bloom competition is any indication.

Dan Rodlie, chair of Trail Community in Bloom (CiB), is still in shock after returning from the 2015 National Symposium and Awards Ceremonies held in Ka-mloops on Oct. 3.

“I’m pretty surprised,” he admitted to the Trail Times. “We didn’t really expect it because you are competing against the top communities (inter-nationally).”

The city took home a five-bloom rating and a bronze title, based on its score of 85.3 per cent in the medium category. Trail came out on top against fellow competi-tors Ahoghill, Northern Ireland, Estes Park, Colo-

rado and Jasper and Stet-tler, Alta.

“It’s what we’ve been striving for, for many, many years,” added Rodlie. “This is the world championship in horticulture. This is the big one.”

Communities in Bloom is a non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsi-bility, and beautification.

Trail has participated in the program since 2002. After running through the ranks of win-ning provincially and na-tionally, the city first set out for an international title back in 2007. After a few attempts, Trail CiB went back to the national stage for a win in 2010 before looking for inter-national bragging rights in 2011. Five years at it, and the judges that eval-uated the community this past summer were impressed.

“Trail is an industrial city that has clearly re-invented itself, celebrat-ing its rock walls beauty that beautify and shore up properties and roads,” judges Lorna McIlroy and Ted Zarudny wrote.

“Also in the figurative sense, Trail rocks with vi-tality, energy and enthu-siasm,” they continued. “The landscape and floral displays, the IncrEDIBLE Green Route, the historic murals and the Avenue of Clans are all assets that make the City of Trail truly (rock)!”

Castlegar Communities in Bloom volunteers accepted the Tidiness Award at the National Communities in Bloom Symposium last week. Photo submitted

Girls and women in the Kootenays will have the opportunity to attend a free soccer leadership workshop in Nelson on Saturday, October 17 as part of the Women’s World Cup Legacy Project.

This is one of five events being hosted across the province between September 20 and November 7, with the goal of inspiring more girls and women to become involved in soccer as a coach, offi-cial, or volunteer. Each full-day workshop fea-tures a keynote speaker, leadership seminar, an intro to coaching and officiating course, on-field practice, free lunch, and more.

Nelson’s event will be led by keynote speaker Beverly Priestman, Women’s Excel U14-17 Director and U17 Head Coach for the Canadian Soccer Association.

The event is being held October 17 from

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LV Rogers High School and Nelson Indoor Soccer Facility. There is no cost for the event. To register go to: www.viasport.ca/soccerlegacy

The Women’s World Cup Legacy Project is a collaboration between ViaSport, the Province of BC, BC Soccer, Van-couver Whitecaps FC, and the Canadian As-sociation for Women and Sport and Physical Activity, with the goal of creating a lasting legacy for girls and women in soccer across British Columbia.

For more details on the events and their locations across BC, or to learn more about the Women’s World Cup Legacy Project, visit Vi-aSport’s website at vias-port.ca/soccerlegacy.

“The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup showed young girls and women in this province that there are many op-portunities for them in

athletics and behind the scenes. These legacy workshops put together by ViaSport and the Province of B.C. will allow them to discover coaching, officiating or volunteering with a soc-cer club in their area and help grow the sport as role models for the next generation,” said Peter Fassbender, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

“In collaboration

with our project part-ners, ViaSport is proud to share the spirit of the Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 across British Columbia.By providing free access to tools, resources and impactful role models, it is our goal to inspire the participation of more female coaches, leaders and advocates in every region of the province,” added Sheila Bouman, CEO, ViaSport.

VOTE

ABC

VOTE STRATEGICALLY

That’s

“Anything But Conservative’’

They are destroying what’s good about the country, and haven’t delivered on the economic boom and plentiful jobs because they’ve been

backing the wrong horse.

They are depending on vote-splitting to get back in again. To stop that, vote for the party

most likely to beat them.

Getting them out is more important than supporting the party you prefer.

The election system can be fixed later, so we won’t have to do this again.

What strategy will work in our riding?Check out www.votetogether.ca

for an unbiased answer.

Here’s the numbers. If everyone in our new riding were to vote the same way

they did last time, the result would be: 45% Conservative; 39% NDP; 8% Green; 7% Liberal.

You can figure from that which party, in our riding, has best chance to beat the Conservative.

For a year now the Kootenay Boundary Re-gional Hospital has been offering breastfeeding support to moms, both new and experienced.

The Slurps and Burps program celebrated its one year anniversary during World Breast-feeding Week, which was celebrated Oct. 1 to 7 in Canada. The program invites moms from Trail and the surrounding area to the hospital ev-ery Tuesday for an hour and half to ask questions, share stories, and get tips on how to improve the breastfeeding experience for both mom and baby.

Dr. Trudi Toews start-ed the program, and Bev

Harmston, perinatal edu-cator, and Margit Hinch-cliffe, an international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and registered nurse who works in the maternity ward, have been facili-tating it.

“It’s always been an ongoing concern in perinatal care, first of all, how many parents are breastfeeding and then how many people continue to breastfeed, and the support around breastfeeding in the com-munity, and what that looks like around here,” said Harmston, asked about why the program was started.

Breastfeedingprogram turns one

continued on page A7

Page 7: West Kootenay Advertiser, October 15, 2015

Moms can bring in their infants and get hands-on help with breastfeeding from Harmston and Hinch-cliffe. There’s also a mid-wife who works with the group, and moms who come in can also be re-ferred to the doctor on call, who will sometimes drop by to talk to the group.

“If the group is still going or if there are people still in the group when the doctor comes in to do the clinic, then they come in and have a chat with everybody and sort of touch base,” said Hinchcliffe.

And the KBRH will soon have even more staff who can help out with the program.

“What we’ve done is we’ve got 80 per cent of the nurses on staff en-

rolled in a breastfeeding course and they will at the end of it be what we call breastfeeding cham-pions, so then they can actually assist in run-ning this clinic,” said Harmston.

The moms also have the chance to talk to each other and get support.

Problems the program has helped moms with include sore nipples, engorgement, latch-ing (how well the baby latches onto its mother’s breast), challenges with premature babies, and social support.

“The society still isn’t really supporting those breastfeeding moms as much as they should be,” said Harmston. “That attitude [that moms shouldn’t breastfeed in public] is still very out there unfortunately, so then what’s a mom sup-posed to do? Go in the

bathroom and sit on the edge of the toilet to feed her baby?”

“It’s ok for them [women] to show their breasts in a sexual way, but it’s not ok for them to show their breasts in a nurturing way and that’s unfortunate,” said Hinchcliffe.

Funding for the pro-

gram comes from Shared Care, a partnership be-tween Doctors of BC and the BC Ministry of Health. It helps to pay for Harmston and Hinch-cliffe’s time, since they run the program outside of their usual hours.

Harmston and Hinch-cliffe plan for the pro-gram to continue, but they may have to change the day of the week that the program is offered on.

“There’s a program in Trail called Building Beautiful Babies, and it runs at the same time as this,” said Harmston, “so some of those moms might benefit from com-ing up here as well, but you know which one do they go to?”

For now Slurps and Burps takes place on Tuesdays on the fourth floor of the KBRH from 11:30 a.m. To 1 p.m.

Can you trust the NDP?NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair promises that he will not bring back the long-gun registry in a future NDP federal government.

Is he telling the truth? His own “policy backgrounder” says he would, “… develop a more effective, better managed system of firearms registration.” Thomas Mulcair Policy Backgrounder, page 3

Before the current election campaign started, Mulcair also said, “I think that it is possible to provide the police with the tools to better protect the public and themselves by making sure they’re able to follow every gun ... That’s our bottom line.” Toronto Sun, July 25th

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, maybe it’s a duck?Mulcair ordered all NDP MP’s to oppose scrapping the useless gun registry in 2012.

Mulcair severely sanctioned MPs who dared vote for their constituents and against the NDP party line. The long-gun registry cost Canadians over $2 billion and didn’t save a single life. Mulcair still pushes such expensive useless schemes.

Mulcair’s NDP also voted against every other effort by the Conservative government to simplify our overly complex and ineffective gun regulations.

Should British Columbians trust Mulcair’s NDP?Mulcair must maintain his base in Montreal and Toronto to retain power; they are the people who favour even more and stricter gun controls.

Do Mulcair’s policies reflect BC or Quebec?

Nelson’s Oxygen Arts Centre was filled to capacity for last week’s triple reading from Canada’s for-mer parliamentary poet laureate Fred Wah and newcomers Leesa Dean and Sonnet L’Abbé, who were celebrating nearly 50 years of creative writing education in the West Kootenay.

Dean is the latest edition to Selkirk College’s creative writing program, while L’Abbé will be teaching the UBC course Writing from the Ground Up at the newly opened campus at 266 Baker St.

The evening was hosted by Winlaw poet Tom Wayman, who along with local editor Verna

Relkoff was largely responsible for facilitating UBC’s expansion into Nelson.

“We’re really proud of how far we’ve come,” say Wayman, who also taught creative writing before the closure of David Thompson University Centre.

Dean opened the reading with “Shelter from the Storm”, a Hali-fax-set short story from her up-coming collection Waiting for the Cyclone, which will be released in 2016 from Brindle & Glass.

That was followed by some po-etry from Sonnet’s Shakespeare, an erasure project L’Abbé is work-ing on that involves “colonizing” Shakespeare’s text.

L’Abbé will also be serving as a writer-in-residence, and she en-couraged people in the communi-

ty to come to her for creative input. The final reading was from

Wah, who taught from 1967 to 1989 in both Nelson and Castle-gar at David Thompson University Centre and Selkirk College.

He shared poems from his latest poetry collection Scree, which is a sample of his early work between 1962 and 1991.

The trio then answered ques-tions from the audience and spoke about the roles of teaching and writing in their lives.

The three of them spoke effu-sively about the burgeoning liter-ary scene and shared thoughts on their creative processes and their teaching philosophies.

The event was co-sponsored but the Elephant Mountain Liter-ary Festival.

Lebahdo, or Lebahdo Flats, just south of Winlaw in the Slocan Valley, is interesting for a few reasons.

The name comes from Chinook jar-gon, a pidgin trade language of the 19th century that borrowed from English, French, and First Nations languages. Lebahdo means ‘shingle’ and is derived from the French le bardeau.

It was so named because John Bell and A.C. Lambert built a mill there in 1905, which presumably made shingles. After a couple of years, they moved to Taghum — another Chinook word, which means six. Bell (1858-1932), who served as Nelson’s mayor in 1925, was probably responsible for naming both.

In 1895, Bell pre-empted land at Sit-kum Creek — another Chinook name, which means middle or half. However, nothing in his background explains his knowledge of or fondess for Chinook jargon, nor is he known to have taken credit for the names.

Lebahdo was added to the CPR time-table on May 6, 1906. The Henderson’s 1910 directory of BC described it as

“A flag station on the Nelson, Slocan City and Sandon branch of the CPR, 29 miles from Nelson.” However, it was misspelled Lebadho — just one of many misspellings that also include Labahdo, Leabado, Labadie, and Lebhado. The latter is how it appears on the sign for Lebahdo Road, the chief way the name has been perpetuated.

Oddly, Lebadho has the same pro-nunciation as the Doukhobor surname Lebedow, which means swan, but the former predates the 1908 arrival of the Doukhobors in BC.

Lebahdo was previously called Wat-son Siding (or Watson Spur, or just Watsons) and was first mentioned in the Slocan Drill of Sept. 23, 1904: “The plans for building the new sawmill at Watsons is hanging fire on account of a hitch in the deal for the plant.” The same paper added on April 14, 1905: “A new sawmill is being erected at Watson siding 16 miles below town by Lambert and Bell.”

Watson’s was named for a family who pre-empted land on the west side of the Slocan River. It appears in the 1910 directory as Watson Spur, “a siding on the Columbia and Kootenay railway, 20 miles from Nelson.” The only listing was for the A.G. Lambert sawmill.

Lebahdo comes from Chinook jargon

In his 1947 memoir, Alfred Gilling-ham Watson (1879-1949) explained that he was born in Belper, Derbyshire, England but before his second birth-day, his father closed his nail manufac-turing business and moved the family to Manitoba, where they homesteaded at Lake Francis during the Riel Rebel-lion.

Later Alfred and a brother tried ranching in Alberta, and the rest of the family joined them. They are now regarded as pioneers of Innisfail.

Tragedy befell them repeatedly: two of Alfred’s siblings died in a diphtheria outbreak and a sister died in Sandon of postpartum psychosis in 1897, leav-ing two young daughters. Alfred and two other siblings went to BC to help raise them.

“In March 1900, three or four of us went down to what is now Lebahdo and built a log bridge of the Slocan River to our new ranch and a log shack and cleared and drained two acres of good land,” he wrote.

The Watson family lived there un-til 1912, when they sold the ranch to the Doukhobors. Alfred served in the First World War and survived, but was stricken with crippling arthritis the rest of his life. He lived in Appledale until his house burned in 1942 and then moved to Nelson. Three of his children are alive, two of whom, Patricia Waters and Faye Watson, still live in Nelson. His son Adrian kindly provided a copy of the memoir quoted above.

Lebahdo is misspelled on the street sign that perpetuates the name. It means shingle in Chinook jargon. Greg Nesteroff photo

Trail Regional PETS on PARADE

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

The days are growing shorter and chillier in B.C. With fall just arrived and Halloween around the corner, it’s a good time to think about the animals in your care and their safety at night. Firecrackers, reworks and other loud noises, as well as plenty of little-people traf c in and out of the house can be upsetting to animals, and even lead to harm.

“Fireworks going off, a constantly ringing doorbell and the presence of costumed strangers can all cause animals to panic, putting both pets and people in danger,” says Lorie Chortyk, BC SPCA general manager of community relations.

When dogs and cats are frightened they are more likely to run away from their homes, jump out of open windows or dart into traf c. Stressed pets can also behave out of character — even scratching or biting people, says Chortyk.

It’s not only companion animals who are at risk.

“Frightened farm animals have even been known to run into barbed-wire fences or other obstructions. With a little planning, guardians can take steps to keep their all their animals safe on Halloween,” says Chortyk.

Help keep your animals safe on Halloween with these tips:

Keep pets inside: Pets who are inside have fewer opportunities to confront trick-or-treaters. Some pets do well left in a separate room with the radio or television on to mask the sound of reworks and trick-or-treaters. Be sure to leave plenty of toys in the room

for your pet so that he doesn’t think he’s being isolated as a punishment. If your pet nds the doorbell disturbing, consider disconnecting the doorbell for the night. Alternatively, you can leave a bowl of treats near the door outside where trick-or-treaters can help themselves. That way, they won’t knock or ring the doorbell – at least not until the bowl is emptied.

Identi cation: Make sure your pet is wearing identi cation. Dogs and cats may try to run away if they feel threatened. Clear, current identi cation is your best chance to have them returned to you.

Candy is for people: Candy can lead to health problems such as diabetes or obesity, and chocolate is especially dangerous because it contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep treats well away from your pets.

Leave home without them: If you think it would be fun to bring your pet trick-or-treating, your pet may not share your view. The strange sights and sounds of Halloween can cause a normally friendly dog to bite if it feels scared or threatened.

Don’t costume your pet: Dressing your dog in a costume inhibits his ability to communicate, making him prone to display aggression himself or be subjected to aggressive behaviour from other dogs.

The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a not-for-pro t organization reliant on public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.
