Santa Claus visited Nelson’s historic fire hall in the days leading up to Christmas, taking time to pose for a picture with the local fire-fighters. They included (L-R) Leo Grypma, fire chief Len MacCharles, Angela Tocher and Marc Thibault. Claus was in town for a few days after he crashed his sleigh into Gyro Park, which caused all his magic to spill out and blanket the landscape in snow. He will be back in commission in time for his hectic annual worldwide gift-delivering gig tomorrow.

Junior freeride team set for European adventure

T YLER HARPERWest Kootenay Advertiser

S a m K u c h

d o e s n ’ t know what to

expect.Freeride skiing

has taken him across the country and south

of the border, but never across oceans. The people,

culture and food will be dif-ferent, of course, but it’s the

mountain he’s travelling for. It’s the mountain he wants to see firsthand.

He’s just not sure what kind of reception the mountain will give him.

“I’ve been told that it’s very windy up there and it’s kind of like [skiing] your way through a rock garden,” said Kuch.

Kuch is part of Whitewater Ski Resort’s junior freeride team. He’s also one of seven skiers on the Canadian team set to travel to Vallnord-Arcalis, Andorra for a Freeride Junior Tour event ten-tatively set for the end of January.

Kuch will compete along-side Whitewater teammates Jeff Ashton, Nigel Ziegler, Haley Cooke, and Savanna Lieshman, while two more join them from Whistler. It’s the next step for the

17-year-old in a

freeride career that began six years

ago. Kuch, who joined Whitewater’s team five years ago, did a year of downhill rac-ing but said he became bored of skiing through gates.

The freedom of freeride ski-ing, which uses natural terrain and is judged based on a combi-nation of tricks, a skier’s line and difficulty, was far more appealing.

“I like it because there’s no rules around it really,” said Kuch. “There’s not really a criteria, you can just ski wherever you want, however you want.”

There will be a lot more at-tention paid to Kuch and other Whitewater skiers in 2016. Nelson’s Trace Cooke is also travelling to Andorra to begin the senior Freeride World Tour. Cooke is the first graduate of the Whitewater program to compete on the world tour.

The junior team, which is a non-profit organization, will focus on North American events once they return from Europe.

Dano Slater is one of the coaches responsible for Whitewater’s freeride success. Slater, who started the program with Peter Velisek in 2009, began skiing freeride competitions in the late 1990s. The sport, he said, has gone through some changes in the interim.

“Back then it was a lot differ-ent,” said Slater. “Less organized, just starting, so we could have gone to a lot more events than we could actually afford to go to so

we just ended u p m a i n l y in North A m e r i c a . There was no support in any other way. There were no teams at that point. You’re all free agents.”

Slater moved onto judging for six years but eventually got sick of watching and not participating. That changed when he got a call from Whitewater about starting the junior program.

Skiers as young as eight have entered Whitewater’s team — al-though Slater thinks that is too young and prefers kids be at least 10 when they join — while the oldest skiers are 18.

Kuch and Slater use words such as love, respect and relaxed to describe the junior team.

“It’s good for me to give some of my knowledge back to younger kids and see them blossom as ski-ers and see them be successful and win,” said Slater, who adds he also has a selfish reason for coaching the team.

“My friends are getting old and they’re not ripping very good anymore. Just keeping these

young-sters, it

makes me feel younger … so it’s a symbiotic sort of thing.”

The upcoming season will be Kuch’s last with the Whitewater team. He said he’s at a crossroads between whether he’ll stay in junior competitions this year or start trying to qualify for the world tour. Either way, he wants the sport to become his career.

Kuch’s future is as ambiguous as what will happen to the sport itself. The anything-within-rea-son-goes attitude that appeals to Kuch and Slater drives freeride skiing, but also in a way inhibits it from ever joining more main-stream events such as downhill or cross country.

Slater said he doubts freeride will ever join the Olympics in its current form. In the end, that’s probably best for the sport and Slater’s team.

“Right now it’s free,” said Slater. “It doesn’t matter, you don’t need ski poles if you don’t want them. You can ski backwards if you want. There’s no rules really. Other than, ‘don’t go over there.’”

One hundred twenty-fifth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

Montgomery, Monte Carlo, and Waterloo Landing were short-lived mining towns on the east side of the Columbia River near present-day Castlegar that are closely intertwined. Some sources say they were all pretty much the same place, while oth-ers draw distinctions.

According to the Trail Creek News of April 16, 1897, “The history of the place dates from August 1895 when Hiram Landis, formerly of Chewelah, Wash., located here and erected a house … for the accommoda-tion for himself and others … They afterward named the place ‘Waterloo Landing.’”

Waterloo, Belgium was the site of the Battle of Waterloo, which ended the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. But the Castlegar News of Sept. 28, 1967 said Waterloo Landing took its name from the Waterloo mine, which was in a group of claims 2½ miles from the town on a ridge just north of Iron Creek.

Clara Graham wrote in Kootenay Mosaic that Waterloo was originally known as Landis’ Landing, but no contemporary references have been discovered.

The earliest mention of both Waterloo and Monte Carlo was in the Trail Creek News of May 23, 1896: “The mysterious ac-tions of a number of Trail boys has been explained … [T]hey have a townsite and lots will be up for sale next week. The site is 15 miles up the river, on the east bank near Waterloo Landing, to be known as Monte Carlo. The owners are A.E.J. Percival, Fred W. Cowan, and Witcher Settle.”

The same issue contained a legal ad indicating Settle wanted to buy 640 acres of surveyed land.

Monte Carlo took its name from a nearby mining claim, which presumably was in turn named for the district in Monaco.

Another early mention ap-peared in the Nelson Miner of July 18, 1896: “The new camp 15 miles upstream where Horne Payne has bonded the Apache and Waterloo groups is now known as the Monte Carlo camp … J. Roup is building a large hotel at Waterloo landing.”

Three days later the Victoria Daily Colonist quoted the Seattle Post-Intelligencer thusly: “One of the surprises of this wonderful country is the rapid develop-ment of the Monte Carlo camp near Waterloo Landing … The reports that come in are very favorable for the establishment of a permanent camp …”

The Colonist also quoted the Trail Creek News: “[B]efore another 12 months the camp of Monte Carlo, now called Waterloo Landing, will be of as much prominence as Trail or Rossland.”

The earliest mention of

Montgomery, meanwhile, was in the Nelson Miner of Aug. 1, 1896: “The Lillooet, Fraser River, and Cariboo Gold Fields Ltd. has purchased the interests of the Columbia and Western rail-way in a square mile of land, lying along the left bank of the Columbia river and beginning three and a half miles below the mouth of the Kootenay river. A few weeks ago the locality was known as Waterloo landing. Then it became Monte Carlo. The company has now chris-tened it Montgomery.”

The Rossland Miner of Aug. 14, 1896 noted: “Notices have been posted up on the new town-site of Montgomery, warning people not to build.”

In the British Columbia Mining Record that month, a correspondent wrote: “A short distance down the river we put into a place with a sign having ‘Montgomery’ on it and under-neath the words ‘Lillooet, Fraser River, and Cariboo Gold Fields Ltd.’ …”

In April 1897, another cor-respondent to that publica-tion noted “We stopped at Montgomery and Waterloo, two new towns which have sprung into existence during the past few months through the proxim-ity of promising mines and sev-eral logging camps in the neigh-borhood …”

No one has ever suggested how Montgomery got its name, but we’ll reveal the answer here: the chairman of the Lillooet, Fraser River and Cariboo Gold Fields Ltd. was Robert Horne-Payne (1869-1929), an English financier who was also active with the Canadian Northern Railway and BC Electric Railway, among other firms. One of his middle names was Montgomery. Hornepayne, Ont. is also named after him.

Register now for creative writing courseBuilding off spirited momentum in

the last couple months, Selkirk College will be offering another creative writ-ing course at the Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) Campus in Nelson starting in January.

Taught by Leesa Dean — author of Waiting for the Cyclone (Brindle and Glass, 2016)—the course begins on Jan. 6 and will run Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“I’m happy to say the fall semester’s creative writing course at KSA was a great success,” says Dean, who began teaching at Selkirk College in September. “The energy in the room was phenome-nal. The youngest student was 18 and the oldest 70, and everyone entered the class at different stages, ranging from never having taken a writing workshop before to literary contest winners. The students entered the room with open minds and a willingness to listen, to experiment, to push themselves to write better poetry and prose, and they all hit the ground running. Some of the work produced in class will surely find homes in literary journals and magazines.”

In the winter semester course, stu-dents can look forward to writing radio plays as well as fiction and non-fiction. In the non-fiction component of the course, Dean will be teaching the basics

of blogging and travel writing, as well as more traditional non-fiction forms.

“Radio plays are so much fun,” Dean says. “We’re hoping to partner with Kootenay Co-op Radio and get some of them produced on air.”

Creative writing education is currently on the rise with many programs in North America seeing increases in enrolment.

“I have spent the past ten years in creative writing classrooms, both as a student and as an instructor,” Dean says. “As far as I’m concerned, creative writing classrooms are the best places on earth. What we learn in these courses — criti-cal reading skills, revision, constructive feedback, evocative writing, creative so-lutions, spontaneity — these skills have a ripple effect that spread to all corners of a person’s life. Creative writing education changed me. It’s made me a better writer and a better person.”

Tuition for the semester costs $273.12. Although this course is a continuation of the fall course at KSA, new students are welcome and encouraged to join.

To enrol, please call Selkirk College’s admissions office at (250) 365-1233 be-fore Dec. 23 as the office will be closed for the holidays between Dec. 24 and Jan. 3. For questions about the course, contact instructor Leesa Dean directly at [email protected].

Creative Writing class member Alejandra Guevara, an exchange student from Mexico, captivated her audience at Selkirk College’s Open Mic event that was geared towards creative arts students. This popular event takes place at Cafe Momento in Nelson’s downtown on the first Thursday of every month during the school term.

Try out for the 2nd Annual Youth Arts Festival Talent Slam!Auditions for Oxygen Art

Centre’s 2nd Annual Youth Arts Festival Talent Slam take place on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 2-5 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson. Anyone aged 15-29 and performing in any disci-pline is welcome to audition for a spot in this showcase of the Kootenay’s best young art-ists. Singing, dancing, music, acting, comedy, performance art, poetry and spoken word, even short film and animations can be submitted for selection. Selected talent will receive one-on-one mentorship with pro-fessional artists Lucas Myers,

Bessie Wapp or Slava Doval, to develop their acts for the big night. Pre-register for Talent Slam auditions online at www.oxygenartcentre.org

Oxygen Art Centre’s Youth Arts Festival aims to encourage youth to pursue their artistic talents and interests, and those of their peers in a professional and meaningful way, that can be celebrated by the commu-nity at large though attendance at the all-ages events. The 1st annual festival was a smash-ing success, providing young Kootenay artists with a profes-sional show and auditions to

try out for, and an opportunity for some to hone their acts with seasoned professionals in the community. Over 200 people filled the Capitol Theatre for the first Talent Slam, and it was an inspiring and very heartfelt event with many original acts performed for the first time in a professional context. The Back Stage Lounge provided a creative “hang out” space for anyone aged 15-29, and hosted a collaborative drawing project and an open mic that morphed into a open jam session with a dozen musicians including a drummer, several saxophonist,

keyboardists, vocalists and the like. Building on this program-ming the 2nd Annual Youth Arts Festival will take place Feb. 13 and 14, 2016, and will include workshops and profes-sional development opportuni-ties in the arts.

Oxygen Art Centre grate-fully acknowledges festival supporters; Columbia Basin Trust, Osprey Community Foundation, Capitol Theatre, Kootenay Co-op, Thor’s Pizza and Business for the Arts spon-sors Hall Printing, Juice FM, Nelson Star and ilovenelson.com

Purse campaign helps women in needVAL ROSSI

West Kootenay Advertiser

Even the smallest gifts can make a difference in one person’s life.

And a Trail woman has taken that idea to the next level to help ease, in one small way, the lives of women most in need.

Jessica McPhee, a care aide and co-chair of the Hospital Employees’ Union’s women’s committee, is spearheading a local purse campaign.

She has already collected over 80 bags and stuffed them with essentials like toothbrushes and soap.

The idea was borrowed and grew quickly with interest

through social media. Many local women cleaned out their closets and donated purses while local businesses followed suit with personal hygiene products.

McPhee even received tooth-brushes and toothpaste from area dentists who wanted to help.

“It’s been fun,” she said. “It’s been really nice to see the com-munity support.”

Her Christmas tree in her Tadanac home is proof of the overwhelming response.

A shiny pink purse holds a toothbrush, floss, shampoo, lo-tion and other toiletries. Other handbags hold much the same, but each is given some extra love and attention with treats like chocolates, a scarf, or lip gloss.

The bags will soon be shared among local shelters, includ-ing some headed for the WINS Transition House.

Willi Coulthard, coordinator of the 10-bed facility in Trail, said those who turn up often come with very little.

“Women living in the transi-tion house are in need of a lot of things that we take for granted,” she said. “Some of them are start-ing from scratch.

“Very often what the residents get as gifts in the transition house are the only presents that they get,” Coulthard added. “I think it means an awful lot to them.”

Anyone interested in donating can reach McPhee via email at [email protected].

Ian Johnston named Nelson’s cultural ambassadorNelson artist Ian

Johnston has been named the city’s cultur-al ambassador for 2016.

“I’m very flattered,” he told the Advertiser following the an-nouncement last week. “I’m honoured and happy to do it.”

The city began nam-ing cultural ambassa-

dors in 2009, each year focusing on a different art form. The ambassa-dor is expected to pro-mote the city wherever they go.

In Johnston’s case, he always seems to be trav-elling to show his work in galleries through-out North America. Currently he has shows

in Florida and Georgia and he’s got one coming up in Prince George.

An architect by train-ing, Johnston has lived in Nelson for the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, the city’s inaugural heritage award has gone to the owners of Cartolina, who restored a building

that dates to 1899.Fiona Richards and

Doug Jones discovered, preserved, and en-hanced the characteris-tics of the building at 652 Baker St., the only surviving part of the Tremont Hotel — and shared their findings along the way, through Instagram and a blog.

The Old-Fashioned Christmas Community Skate at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena in Grand Forks on Dec. 17 was packed with youngsters, families, and people of all ages. The event featured carolling in the lobby, free hot chocolate, free skating, a performance by the Grand Fork Figure Skating Club, and even an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

Kootenay Music Festival 2016 to be held in TrailSUBMIT TED

“A music festival is a good thing in itself. It is chiefly ben-eficial to the young who through the competitions have an oppor-tunity of learning much about music that they could learn in no other way. The fact that the festival is to be held annually will encourage interest in music generally as the competitors have to spend months in practic-ing for the contests.”

These words were originally written for the first festival in 1930.

The Kootenay Music Festival had its inception with repre-sentatives of the Trail Veteran’s Orchestra and the Nelson Symphony Orchestra setting up a joint committee to plan for a Kootenay-wide festival in the spring of 1930. Founders realized that one of the most challenging problems was a suitable venue for the large number of participants and audiences anticipated. The decision to use both the Trinity Church and the Opera House proved very wise as, within a short time, nearly 1,000 com-petitors were registered in 187 classes.

The very first Kootenay Music Festival was held on May 29 and

30, 1930 in Nelson’s venerable old Opera House. Shortly after, on July 17, 1930, the Nelson Musical Festival Association was incorporated under the Societies Act as the governing body of the annual Nelson Music Festival, or Festival of the Arts as it is re-ferred to today.

With financial and artistic suc-cess behind them, planning for a 1931 festival in Trail began. A Trail Music Festival Association was assembled, and the Kootenay Music Festival has alternated be-tween Nelson and Trail almost every year since that date, with a wartime break from 1943-46, and from 1964-67 when, with help from the Canada Council, it was once again revived. This venerable two-week festival has been a cultural cornerstone of the history of Nelson and Trail and all the surrounding com-munities since 1930. Indeed, it is one of the oldest festival tradi-tions in BC.

Its goals have always been to inspire, educate, evaluate and promote regional students in the performing arts disciplines of piano, strings, voice, choral, dance, drama and speech arts. The festival supports the many disciplines of performing arts teaching in our region, through

schools and private teachers. The Kootenay Festival of the Arts has embraced new forms of per-forming arts expression, while respecting and upholding the historical forms.

For 2016, Nelson will be host-ing the festival. Check out the website, www.kootenayfesti-valofthearts.ca for the syllabus, registration forms, donations, inquiries and contact informa-tion. The dates for the 2016 Kootenay Festival of the Arts is listed below:Dance: March 30 — April 2Highlights Concert at the Capitol Theatre: April 2Speech Arts, Vocal/cho-ral, Strings, Guitar, Piano and Woodwinds: April 11 — 16Highlights Concert at the Capitol Theatre: April 16

The committee must re-ceive entry forms by Jan. 31, 2016. Extra entry forms may be downloaded from our web-site, kootenayfestivalofthearts.ca Completed entry forms must be surface posted or couriered, and received by the January 31st deadline. Entries submitted after the closing date will be accepted up to Feb. 10, 2016 and must include a late entry fee of $10.00 per entry in addition to the regu-lar entry fee.

Columbia Basin chil-dren and communities will continue to receive opportunities to learn about, appreciate and care for the natural world around them, through Columbia Basin Trust’s $1-million commitment to two environmental education initiatives. These are the Know Your Watershed pro-gram and the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network.

These init iat ives have proven successful, and we’re pleased we can commit additional funding to help them be-come more sustainable, plan into the future and grow, said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Manager, Water and Environment. Through these initiatives basin students will continue to have hands on oppor-tunities to increase their understanding of the natural environment, which Basin residents have told us is a priority.

The Know Your Watershed program w i l l b e r e c e i v i n g $540,500 over three years. Working with en-vironmental educators in the Basin, the Trust developed this program in 2010 to help Grade 8 students understand where their water comes from, how it is used and where it goes after it is used. The program is delivered to schools by local educators around the Basin working with Wildsight. Learn more at wildsight.ca/program/

know-your-watershed.Wildsight is thrilled

to continue working with the Trust to deliver Know Your Watershed, said Monica Nissen, Manager for Wildsightís education programs. We hear from teachers and students across the Columbia Basin how much they love the ac-tion-oriented, hands-on learning of the program. Because it incorporates knowledge from local community experts, not only does it make a big impact on students, but it also strengthens the community as a whole.

T h e C o l u m b i a Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) will be re-ceiving $500,000 over three years. Created in partnership with the Trust in 2002, CBEEN supports environmental education in the Basin by offering professional development for edu-cators and providing them access to training, resources, opportunities and tools. It also deliv-ers the Wild Voices for Kids program, which has local experts deliver curriculum-linked pro-grams to schools across the Basin. Learn more at cbeen.org.

CBEEN is excited to continue to play a key role in encouraging en-vironmental steward-ship and sustainability in the Canadian Columbia Basin by supporting en-vironmental education, said Duncan Whittick, C B E E N E x e c u t i v e Director. There are so many educators from across our region who

provide excellent learn-ing opportunities for both classrooms and communities, and we look forward to continu-ing to work hard to sup-port their efforts.

The Trust highlights environmental educa-

tion and stewardship as one of the five goals in its Environment Strategic Plan 2014-2019. To learn more about the education and awareness projects and programs it supports, visit cbt.org/enviroeducation.

WEEKLY

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Think about ideas for the future if what you are doing right now does not seem very exciting to you, Aries. A new plan of attack can reinvigorate your motivation.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, focus your energy on home-relat-ed projects. Procrastination is your enemy in these circumstances and can staunch any productivity you may have achieved.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, there is a way out of every situation, even if it seems like all exits are blocked. Swallow your pride if need be and accept the help of others when it’s offered.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, you will be getting a lot of help with a special project, so expect it to go quite smoothly. Just be sure to pay back the favor when you can.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, a new perspective could help you see that things you thought were a big deal are really mole hills instead of mountains, and that’s an important lesson to learn.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, learn how to deal with confl ict in a productive way. Otherwise you may be stressed out and full of angst for no reason at all.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Somehow you always manage to pull through even with a ton of things on your plate, Libra. Even though you are successful, remember to schedule some downtime once in awhile.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Don’t get caught daydreaming too much this week, Scorpio. People at work may think you’re not serious about your ef-forts when nothing could be further from the truth.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, expect to spend some money this week. Just how much you will spend depends on your ability to fi nd the best bargains and discounts.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20It can be frustrating when others do not seem to understand your motives, Capricorn. Don’t feel pressured to change your way of doing things, especially if it’s working.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, something you have been look-ing forward to for some time is about to happen. It has been a long time coming but entirely worth it. Enjoy the ride.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, stick up for yourself when you need to. You are your biggest advocate, and you will present a strong front when feeling secure.
