Each half term your child will be given a short test in Maths, Grammar, Spelling and Writing in order to assess their progress and identify next steps in learning.

Each child will also sit a test in Science after each unit. Once these assessments have been completed, we set new targets for your child and complete their attitude tracker for attendance, punctuality, behaviour, effort, homework and uniform.

We also take into account the children's work from the previous weeks and our ongoing observations. Once this form is finalised and discussed with your child, a copy is sent home to parents. You will receive your first copy at parents' evening in November.

Teaching and Learning expectations for the year.

These expectations are what your child will be taught this year.At a glance there doesn’t seem much, but each of these objectives will be broken down to ensure your child is effectively learning.

Page 8: Welcome to Year 2 Miss Wainwright Miss Gilbert Mrs Sumner Mrs Hutchinson Mrs Tessier Mrs Pagan

ReadingRead as often as you can. It is really important that you question your child about what they have read.Allow your child to read whatever interests them. It is essential that we help enhance your child’s enjoyment for reading.Throughout the week your child will regularly read with an adult, during the reading circuit and guided reading sessions. Books will be changed when appropriate. Please sign and date reading diaries, at least 3 times a week.

SpellingEach child will receive a home school spelling book.

Each week your child will receive spellings and the testing day will be on the booklet. The spelling test will be completed within this book, so it is really important the child brings their spelling book to school each day.

Sometimes you may feel that the spellings are too simple, but this may be because your child is not applying them in their writing.

The amount of spellings to learn will depend on the child.

Grammar and handwriting The New Curriculum has a stronger focus on grammar. Your

child will be taught how to use and identify correct grammar and punctuation in lessons.

There will be an emphasis on learning the vocabulary for the grammar being taught such as nouns, conjunctions, inverted commas.

We will be offering a parent workshop (hopefully in Autumn term) and resources to support grammar at home in the future.

Children will be taught a continuous cursive style of handwriting from KS1 to support their ability to join. Pens are allocated in KS2 when your child is able to write in a joined style consistently.

Maths The aims in maths have changed with the new

national curriculum. Teaching and learning is now centred around helping children achieve a broader and deeper understanding of the subject, rather than moving on to new content once they show initial understanding.

Norwood will be using documents that support the National Curriculum from Rising Stars to teach maths.

Maths Maths lessons will be taught daily, with 4 a day and

mental maths test also being included during the week.

We will be focussing on presentation of our maths books throughout the whole school, so attention will be paid to the way children complete their work and their formation of numbers. There will be 2 workshops run for parents throughout the year, for both KS1 and KS2.

The Calculation Policy at Norwood is designed to lead children step by step to become competent and confident users of formal written methods for mathematical calculations by the end of Year 6.

The policy, which includes detailed explanations, can be found on the Norwood website and demonstrates the methods that will be taught for each year group. If you have any difficulties accessing this, please see the office for a paper copy.

We will continue to use the MyMaths online resource this year.

Log in - norwood1

Password – square272

Each child will have an individual username (e.g. abc) and a password (e.g. 123), which will allow them to access homework and maths activities while out of school.

Children can complete learn activities on My Maths, without their teacher setting work.

Alternatively, BBC Bitesize is excellent!

Children need to know all their times tables up to 12.

saying e.g 1 x 10 =10 2 x 10 = 20

knowing e.g. 2 x 10 =? 9 x 10 = ?

And finally, applyinge.g How many groups of 10 are there in 60?

Homework

It is really important that homework is returned in order to ensure that it is marked on time.

Children will be given a Math's activity and an English activity.

Most children will have a specific target of learning certain times table facts. This will be ongoing and will be tested regularly in school.

During the year, creative learning tasks will be provided which will be linked to the class’ topic work.

Suggestions for homework will be given for children to complete over the Summer holidays. This is voluntary and will be shared with other pupils on their return in September.

Behaviour system• At Norwood we are always looking for ways to improve. Our behaviour system has worked well

over the last few years, but has become quite time-consuming to administer. We are planning to keep the principles of our previous system but use the online Dojo system to track behaviour. We hope that this system will provide even more consistency in recognising the good behaviour of the majority of our pupils.

• ClassDojo is an online behaviour management tool. Pupils are represented by monster avatars. As previously all pupils begin the week on the sunshine. Teachers use the site to give out points - at the tap of the board - for behaviours they’d like to encourage eg working hard or being kind and helpful. Teachers will use the data gathered to award a Rainbow Merit for outstanding behaviour at the end of the week - in place of a rainbow sticker (as previously, pupils will still move to the Rainbow).

• Outstanding behaviour is described on our ‘I am outstanding when…’ poster which explains what an outstanding pupil looks like.

• Pupils who achieve 5 Rainbow Merits in ½ a term will achieve a bronze, silver or gold certificate, as previously. Gold 2, as previously, will gain an outstanding platinum award at the end of the year. Pupils who lose points will move to the cloud and lose minutes of Golden Time, as previously.

• By the end of the year we hope to give parents the option of accessing an online account. This will allow you to see how your child is getting on.
