YEAR 1• In Penguin class Mrs Jenkins teaches Monday-

Friday.• In Lion class Mrs Dalton teaches Monday-Friday.•We have lovely teaching assistants that work

across both classes:-Mrs Woodhams-Mrs SaukuruThey will be on the gate each morningto take any messages.

GENERAL INFORMATION• Book change days are Tuesday and Friday. Children will put their old

books in a basket and put their new books from their drawer into their book bag. No back packs please.

• P.E. will be on Tuesday and Thursday, children will wear P.E. kit to school on these days.• Spellings will start in term 2 and will be sent home in their home-school diaries at the end

of the previous term.• Our open afternoon is Friday 18th October for you come in and see the children’s work.• Parent consultations- Wednesday 23rd October• Thursday 24th October• While we get to know you all please try to stand on the side of your child’s class and

wave at us so we know who is who. • Children are now able to attend afterschool clubs (3.15-around 4.30) including Tag

Rugby, Zumba, Computing, Dodgeball and Tennis. If you would like to sign them up you can pick up form from outside reception.

PARENT HELPERS• There will be a timetable on the classroom door later this week for

you to sign up if you would like to come in and help.• We are asking for ‘Reading Champions’ that will come in each

week for at least half an hour to read with the children outside of the classroom.

• We would also like people in to bake/make with small groups of children each week.

• Please make sure you are available to come at the time that you sign up for each week.

DISCOVERY TIME

Research and our school experience tells us that young children learn best through play and exploration, this is why we have built on the excellent practice found in Reception.Every day our children get the chance to be a designer, an artist, a writer, a scientist, a musician, a mathematician, a storyteller, an athlete, geographer or historian. Carefully planned play-based experiences inspire the children to consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding enabling them to be independent, resilient learners who motivate themselves to take on the next challenge and push themselves to their limits.

BEING A MATHEMATICIAN • Super Maths Facts have been stuck into home school diaries for you to practise

at home with your child. These change each big term to add new challenges. From term 2 the children will have a quick quiz each week for them to practise these.

• Mathletics logins have been stuck into the front of the home school dairies so that you are able to access this from home with your child. The subject areas get opened throughout the year as children learn about them in school. There are lots of other activities that are always available and children can earn certificates for completing these. Children can bring them into school to share with their peers in clapping assembly.

• Each Friday a sticker will also be put in to let you know what we have been learning during the week in Maths. It would be great if you could practise this at home with your child.

BEING A READER• The reading challenge is in the back of children’s books, we

will check their home school dairies each Monday and if the have read 5 times from the previous Monday-Sunday they will get a stamp, once they have received 6 stamps they will get a certificate- Bronze, Silver, Gold.

• Once this is completed they will have the chance to earn extra playtime each week in Platinum club.

• We read guided reading books with the children each week. • The reading colour levels have been broken up into subdivisions (e.g. Blue A, Blue B

and Blue C) depending on the sounds in the book which relates to the phonics they have been taught. This means we assess their progress with more accuracy even though it seems like they will be on the same level for longer.

• In order to develop higher reading skills with your child it is really helpful to discuss what is happening, talk about the characters, why are they doing the things they do and can they make links with their own experiences and other books.

FOREST SCHOOL• All children will get a chance to go out for forest school throughout the year for a

whole term. You will receive a letter at the end of the previous term to inform you when it is your child’s turn.

• Mrs Laraway & Mrs Bettesworth will take them in small groups on a Monday afternoon.

• When it is your child’s turn please send in their forest school clothes in a bag for them to change into after lunch.

• Please can you make sure your child has wellies in school and they fit!

LEARNING BEARS• These are the learning

behaviours that we are hoping the children will adopt.

• These are tied in with our marking and clapping assembly certificates.

• Children get to hold the bear that they have shown the attributes of and receive a sticker to wear home.

GROWTH MINDSET• This is a whole school initiative

that you children have already been introduced to.

• We talk about how practise makes our brain grow stronger and happy mistakes help us to learn.
