TOPICSin the tropics

Welcome to The Whitsundays on the tropical

Queensland coast of Australia - numerous islands,

coral reefs, waterways, mainland forests and

dozens of island and mainland holiday options.

Swim, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, jet ski, windsurf or

paddle. Cruise away for a day, overnight or as many

days as you like. Get airborne for a breathtaking

view or a sky dive. Take to the trails, meet a croc,

ride a bike, shop, be pampered, sip on a cool drink,

eat at a different restaurant for every meal, or do

absolutely nothing!

Seem too good to be true? A unique geographic

location, blissful weather and excellent service

ethics make it all possible. What’s more, it’s safe,

clean and friendly with no travel-alert stress.

Pack only the basics: a camera, sun block, hat, UV

protective sunglasses, a t-shirt for snorkelling,

some mix and match casual clothes and a warm

jacket for cooler nights on the water. Shoes? Think

sandals plus casual soft-soled shoes that protect

feet from coral beaches yet don’t mark boat decks.

Protective lycra suits (stinger suits) for holidays

between October and May can be hired or

purchased on arrival. Don’t overload your luggage

with snorkel or dive gear - plenty is available

locally for hire. And if you leave anything at

all behind, you can pick it up locally. Major

supermarket and specialty stores are in easy reach.

GET HEREhow to

By road 125 km north of Mackay and 60 km south

of Bowen on Queensland’s coastal Bruce Highway is

Proserpine. On its northern outskirts, turn off for the

20 minute drive through emerald green sugar cane

farms and State Forest hilltops to The Whitsunday

Coast (map pages 54-55). The first suburb is

Cannonvale, then comes the breathtaking view over

Abel Point Marina and Pioneer Bay, followed by Airlie

Beach (map pages 32-33). Proserpine and Airlie are

regular stops for north and south bound transit

coaches. In a private car, the drive from Brisbane

takes about 12 hours plus breaks, from Cairns allow

about 7 hours plus breaks.

By rail State of the art trains, including the super

fast Tilt Train, traverse Queensland’s eastern

seaboard. Call 132 332 and specify Proserpine as

your destination. Pre-book coach, taxi or limousine

transfers to your accommodation.

By air Jetstar and Virgin Blue offer direct flights to

both of the two commercial airports: Whitsunday

Coast Airport, near Proserpine, and Great Barrier

Reef Airport, Hamilton Island. Qantas also flies into

Hamilton Island, including a connection with Cairns.

From Proserpine it’s a 35 minute transfer to coastal

destinations. Hamilton Island involves a picturesque

big catamaran transfer to your island or the

mainland or a spectacular light plane flight to the

mainland. Transfers should be pre-booked. See the

next page for more details. See all this info online at

74 ISLANDSAfter the last Ice Age, the Coral Sea’s level rose,

converting the once volcanic, coastal mountains of

The Whitsunday region into a unique, dense cluster

of islands. Over time, with warm tropical currents

and protection from rough seas by the Great

Barrier Reef, ‘fringing’ coral reefs abounding with

tropical marine life grew around the islands.

The first inhabitants were the Ngaro and Giru

Aboriginal people. Some remnants exist on Hook

and South Molle Islands. The next significant

arrival, in 1770, was Lt James Cook who was

mapping and researching for Britain’s government.

On a northerly course, he sailed into the

Whitsunday Passage on Whit Sunday (June 3rd),

discovering the Great Barrier Reef by running

aground on a submerged reef!

Today, over 800,000 visitors annually marvel at the

natural wonders of the Whitsunday region. Thanks

to protective controls, what visitors see today has

changed very little from what the Aboriginals and

Cook saw. The entire area to mainland high water

mark is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

and The Great Barrier Reef is World Heritage listed.

The islands range from tidal rocky outcrops to

massive monoliths cloaked in a soft mantle of

native hoop pine mixed in with lowland rainforest.

Havens abound for pleasure craft, snorkelling,

diving, fishing and bushwalking. Beaches of coral

sand - and almost pure white silica sand in the case

of Whitehaven Beach - are backed by bushland

where bird life fills the air. In the sea are dolphins,

turtles, manta rays, tropical fish and corals. In late

winter and early spring migrating humpback whales

pass through.

Resort developments are strictly limited to only

seven of the seventy-four main islands. Their

diversity ensures there’s one suitable for everyone,

regardless of income, age or special interest.

To go back-to-nature, thirty-odd campsites are

maintained by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife

Service. Permits are essential.

Page 13: Welcome to the Whitsundays

13

If you choose to base yourself on the mainland, or

want to see more than your own island, dozens of

boat and plane connections exist. Day guests and

visiting yachts are welcomed at most resorts.

Hamilton Airport, commercial marina, shopping

village, restaurants, hotels, self catered apartments

and houses. Innumerable island activities for adults

and kids; new 18-hole golf course on neighbouring

Dent Island.

Long Island Resort All-inclusive value for money

for the whole family, water sports, bushwalking, lots

of free activities and free kids’ club.

Paradise Bay Eco Escape (Long Island) Basic

accommodation, limited guests, diving, bushwalking

and dinner under the stars.

Koala Adventure Island (South Molle) For under

35s with sandy beaches, party at night, play by

day, 9-hole golf course, tennis, archery, spectacular

bush walks.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa Closest to the

mainland, four stars, spa, open air cinema, mini golf,

outdoor aquariums, two pools, three life-size mermaid

sculptures, water sports, fringing reef, kids’ club.

Hayman Five-star, multi award-winning resort

enjoyed by an A-list of guests from the world over.

A fleet of power boats take you where you please.

Hook Island Resort Dormitory-style rooms and

camp sites, spectacular fringing reef, bushwalks,

excellent diving.

Club Med Lindeman Island Typical Club Med style,

airstrip, kids’ club.

Booking an island resort holiday

Visit the various resorts’ web sites or a travel agent

for guidance. Pre-book accommodation and boat

cruises if visiting during peak seasons or if your

schedule is inflexible. If booking upon arrival, you’ll

have the advantage of local knowledge from on-

street agents and reception offices. When planning

a wedding, all islands offer special arrangements

for wedding ceremonies, receptions and

accommodation. Local celebrants are on hand for all

wedding locations from traditional to island beach.

Explore calm waters, closely placed islands and

rich ecosystems during numerous one-day and

extended cruise options - slow or fast, basic or

luxury. Local booking staff can advise on the right

cruise for you. Make sure not to miss Whitehaven

Beach and the nearby Hill Inlet lookout, seven

kilometres of fine white sand, impossibly blue water,

and views so stunning they are hard to believe.

Most cruises offer snorkelling, beach or water

games and an appreciation of the unique

ecosystems. You might spot an eagle with chicks

on a rocky outcrop, swim with manta rays, be

followed on your cruise by dolphins or, from July

to September, it could be a humpback whale.

Day cruises If time is short, a three-island day

cruise or sunset cruise is ideal. If possible, for

variety take more than one cruise. Various cruises

can highlight secluded island bays for snorkeling

or diving, an easy walk to the Hill Inlet lookout,

a visit to a resort island or two or a cruise to the

outer Great Barrier Reef. Most island cruises visit

world famous Whitehaven Beach, offer great food,

relaxation, learning about the local ecology and

interacting with friendly, knowledgeable crews.

explore the

GREAT BARRIER REEFThe Great Barrier Reef is:

• at 2000 km long, the world’s largest living

structure

• made of tiny marine animal skeletons piling on

top of their ancestors

• a collection of some 3000 individual reefs

housing thousands of species of fish and molluscs,

hundreds of reef-building hard corals, uncounted

soft corals and six of the world’s seven species of

sea turtles

• an extremely fragile ecosystem, protected by

World Heritage listing and National Park status,

monitored and controlled by the Great Barrier Reef

Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA)

Many reefs can be accessed by recreational divers

and snorkellers - and for this The Whitsundays is

an underwater mecca. Day and extended cruises

variously cater for learner and qualified divers, as

well as snorkelers, and can include both fringing

reef and outer reef. SCUBA courses are available.

If time is short and if you are medically fit, try an

‘Introductory Dive’. Bareboat charterers can go to

even more islands on a ‘snorkel safari’.

Island fringing reef A vast array of brilliantly

colourful corals and sea life abounds around the

islands. Regardless of weather conditions, your

cruise will be able to take you to great fringing

reefs in calm waters.

Page 17: Welcome to the Whitsundays

17

GREAT BARRIER REEFThe Great Barrier Reef Large and small cruise

vessels, usually with a snorkel/dive and eco

orientation, moor at Bait Reef, Knuckle Reef, Hardy

Reef and The Stepping Stones. Two daily cruises

aboard large, comfortable, fast catamarans take

you to purpose-built pontoons at Hardy or Knuckle

Reefs and cater for your every need. Even non-

swimmers can have a ‘reef experience’. It’s a great

way to see a host of curious and colourful fish

and innumerable corals. If time is short, fly out,

or back, or both ways, in a helicopter or seaplane.

Airborne is also the only way to see the famous

Heart Reef: an ideaI start for weddings with a

difference or a romantic prelude to a champagne

lunch on a deserted beach.

Page 18: Welcome to the Whitsundays

18

Advice to snorkellers:

• wear a shirt and sun block in the water

• keep an eye on your boat as tidal currents are

unnoticeable in the underwater magic

• if swimming between October and May, hire or

buy a ‘stinger suit’

Advice to divers:

• hire bulky gear locally

• bring your current certification

• dive medicals are available from local doctors

• try to experience the diving on both fringing and

outer reefs

WHITSUNDAY COASTThe Town of Whitsunday (consisting of Airlie Beach,

Cannonvale, Jubilee Pocket, Flame Tree and Shute

Harbour) offers a mix of First World services and

security set within a laid back tropical lifestyle. The

best advantage of all: almost all the Whitsundays’

natural wonders and activities are within easy

reach of a mainland base. However, a mainland

holiday comes with a warning, for the lifestyle easily

seduces and locals just smile when they hear of yet

another visitor who has gone home, packed up and

moved back to The Whitsunday Coast just as fast as

they possibly could!

The Whitsunday Coast extends from Bowen in the

north to Laguna Whitsundays and Midge Point in

the south. To the west is Proserpine and Peter Faust

Dam’s barramundi-rich Lake Proserpine. Conway

National Park and Conway State Forest roll down

almost to the water’s edge.

The main centre, Airlie Beach, consists of one

street and offshoots peppered with coffee

shops, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, fast food

eateries, boutiques, banks, small supermarkets and

accommodation. The amphitheatre of framing hills

is partially cloaked in four-star-plus, self-contained

apartment accommodation with views to die for.

detail and maps, see pages 30-33.

Airlie Beach Race Week In August-September

annually the famous Race Week culminates in the

even more famous ‘Great Whitsunday Fun Race’.

A great time to partake of special events and

activities centred around Whitsunday Sailing Club.

Whitsunday Reef Festival Several days of high

excitement in October. A street carnival, live music,

sand sculpting, a fashion show and the famous

Esplanade dinner party are just a few of the events.

For dates, bookings and a complete list of events,

visit www.whitsundayreeffestival.com.au.

Whitsunday Great Walk View undisturbed flora,

fauna and breathtaking scenery. Plan thoroughly for

the three day Whitsunday Great Walk itself through

the Conway Range, or take impromptu short walks

that introduce you to the natural attractions and

superb views that abound in the area. Before setting

out, check that the walks are open (rain may force

them to close) and obtain a permit.

Shute Harbour and Bush Walks (11km from Airlie

Beach) Don’t miss the staggering views from the

Lions Lookout. The natural harbour and proximity to

the islands means that the jetty precinct is usually a

hive of activity with boats and visitors coming and

going. On the way, stop off at the Queensland Parks

and Wildlife Service (corner of Shute Harbour and

Mandalay Roads) for local flora and fauna displays,

Great Walk and island camping information and

permits. Further along, after Flame Tree, on the

bush-cloaked drive to Shute Harbour are the start

Park. Use the Parks and Wildlife published guides to

determine which walks suit your energy levels and

available time.

Whitsunday Airport Start here for spectacular

airborne views of the islands, reefs and mainland

from a fixed wing plane, a helicopter or at the end

of a parachute. Or just sip a cool drink or coffee

and watch this busy light airport’s landings and

take-offs.

Cannonvale Two major shopping centres are

situated at the corners of Island Drive and Paluma

Road respectively (see map pages 30-33) and

numerous services, including banks, are all within

easy reach by several modes of transport. A regular

bus run links Cannonvale and Shute Harbour.

Strathdickie and Brandy Creek Don’t miss the

emerald green cane fields (and some spectacular

twilight cane fires in season July to October), fitting

contrasts to the impossibly blue water lapping up

to the coastline. Check out the rainforest which

surrounds the entrance to the Great Walk in Brandy

Creek Road. See ‘Drive, Bike and Scoot Time’ on

pages 52-55 for the 49 km circuit drive.

Further Afield For lots more information, turn

to pages 46-49 for ‘Welcome to Proserpine’ and

‘Exploring the Coast’ and ‘Drive Time’.

Wildlife See crocodiles at a safe distance on a

safari tour. Spot rainbow lorikeets, sulphur crested

cockatoos, kookaburras, owls, sunbirds, wallabies,

goannas, tree frogs, pheasant coucals, geckoes,

skinks and more. In The Whitsundays, the wildlife is

all around you.

Expend some energy Within walking distance are

water sports, parasailing, push biking, scenic walks,

swimming, shopping or partying at a local spot. Get

down to Whitsunday Airport for tandem skydiving.

For kids with energy to burn, see ‘Holiday Therapy’

on pages 38-45.

Pamper yourself Spend the day at one of several

spas and beauty salons located on the Whitsunday

Coast or just laze away the time by the pool.

‘Holiday Therapy’ on pages 38-45 has more detail.

And then there are Movies and shows at Proserpine’s Entertainment Centre and in Bowen, ten-pin in Bowen, golf in Proserpine, at Laguna Whitsundays and soon at Riordanvale, sailing off Whitsunday Sailing Club and regular and other

special local events (see pages 26-27).

Where to Stay

There’s no doubt you will find the right mainland accommodation, from basic dormitories to four or four-and-a-half star alternatives. Stay in a stylish hotel room, a self-contained apartment, a motel, a cabin or unhitch your caravan in one of the six mainland parks. All welcome children and some

allow pets.

Accommodation is available from heart of Airlie to away-from-it-all holiday homes and cottages in the hills and nearby bushland. There’s plenty in quieter Cannonvale and as far afield as Proserpine, Midge Point, Cape Gloucester and Bowen. An email or phone call to a local booking office service will

quickly set you on the right track.

Page 27: Welcome to the Whitsundays

27

Self-Contained or Dine Out? Families and couples

often enjoy the convenience and privacy of a

kitchen where meals to suit can be prepared as you

like. The range of self-catered accommodation is

vast. However, eating out is always going to be a

temptation because there is so much to offer. No

matter what the meal, the range from casual to

silver service will have you thinking about not doing

any washing up!

B&Bs and Cottages For visitors tired of ‘formula’

holidays this home-away-from-home experience is

quite different to that found in hotels and resorts.

Or visit a local variation on the B&B theme – a self-

catered cottage in private bushland, abundant with

wildlife yet only minutes from the supermarket and

Abel Point Marina.

Getting Around If you take your Whitsunday

holiday by plane, you need wheels on the ground.

Rental cars, limousines, taxis, mokes, scooters,

bicycles and the local bus service will have

you zipping around in no time. When it comes

time to go cruising and touring, the majority

provide free courtesy transfers to and from your

accommodation’s doorstep.

For more information about individual hotels,

resorts, holiday houses, motels, flats, tourist parks,

activities and transport use the links at

WILD SIDEWHITSUNDAY

Jetskiing, Kayaking, and Hobie Cats are on the jetty at Coral Sea Resort. The beach near the Broadwater Avenue car park is the place for hobies, pedal boats and more jet skis.

Jetski Guided Tours Spot turtles, dugongs and maybe a whale, visit a secluded island beach and sightsee the ‘big island’ from the best water vantage points. Even take in a visit to a beautiful island resort. Fast and thrilling or sedate and informative, weight and age restrictions apply.

Open Water Speed Twin-outboard, semi-rigid inflatables are super fast, skimming across the sea for an adrenalin rush and fast arrival at Whitehaven Beach.

Tandem Skydiving Whitsunday Airport between Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour is the place to throw yourself out of a plane for a mega rush and fantastic views over the entire Whitsundays. Never fear, all the way down you’re in the hands of a skydive expert who will ensure you won’t stop grinning for a week!

Extreme Walking The Whitsunday Great Walk offers 3 hours to 3 days of varied terrain, flora, fauna and fantastic views. Information from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service at www.epa.qld.gov.au or by phoning (07) 4946 7022.

Learn To Dive Some of Australia’s top dive sites make The Whitsundays a diver’s mecca. Many day and extended cruises incorporate fringing or outer reef experiences for both experienced and ‘Introductory’ divers on a choice of boats.

Learn To Fly Next to the main terminal at Whitsunday Airport is Helibiz which will teach you how to fly a Robinson helicopter.

Learn To Sail Head to Whitsunday Sailing Club for full or short centerboard sailing; most people say they haven’t had such fun in years.

Fishing Win the fight with a fat barramundi in Lake Proserpine or, offshore, dozens of saltwater species or a big fighting fish; guided cruises are available.

Kite Flying & Hang Gliding Take a kite to Kings Beach, Bowen on a good wind day. Hang gliding junkies head for Eungella, (west of Mackay). See pg 53 for directions.

HOLIDAY

THERAPY

including Cruise Ship visits

A holiday can be as much about escape and

relaxation as new experiences. High pressured work

and home environments take their toll on bodies

and minds. In The Whitsundays, you are in the right

place to soothe your body and soul.

Go shopping

Guys can tune out here while we talk shopping

- yes, find the divine little top, vase, painting,

earrings, nic nac or sarong you could never quite

locate at home. One advantage of shopping in

The Whitsundays is that, while the shops include

those you would expect, the area also attracts

very creative people and the result is unique and

delightful shopping experiences. The ads in this

Holiday Therapy section are a great guide.

Wherever you are shopping, you’ll find courtesy

and a true desire to help you find what you seek.

Opening hours may be shorter than in cities but

there will still be time to combine your expeditions

with refresher stops for a coffee break.

Airlie Beach Walk the length of both sides of

the street but don’t forget the shops off-street,

in the arcades and on The Esplanade along the

beachfront. Explore the full length of the main

street or you’ll miss unique jewellery, lighting and

home accessories, including statuary large and

small and a fabulous range of hammocks. Also

in Airlie’s main street is the arcade home for real

thirty-plus women. All sizes in natural woven

and cool cotton knits, linen, silk and stunning,

fresh colours. You could take the same outfit to a

tropical wedding, to make a corporate impression

or to dinner - anywhere, any time. At the opposite

end of Airlie are several fashion stores but the

one not to miss is near the Proserpine-bound bus

stop. For many years the owner quietly collected

a devoted local following by displaying her own

fashion designs at the Airlie markets. Now she

has a shop where the casual, comfortable mix

and match pieces tempt everyone seven days a

week. On Saturday mornings, don’t miss the Airlie

Beach Markets, just the place for a locally created

treasure, especially in painting, photography,

jewellery, fashion and cottage crafts. The markets

are also a treasure trove of local produce and

refreshing drinks based on locally grown fruits.

Cannonvale Don’t miss the two shopping centres,

one just beyond the turn-off to Abel Point

Marina, and the other about 2 km further along.

You’ll find the standard boutiques and other

outlets but also some locally owned and operated

surprises that will make you glad you made the

effort. These include one of Australia’s biggest

ranges of puzzles at Whitsunday Shopping Centre

and eclectic mixes of giftware, homewares and

furnishings at Centro Whitsunday. But there’s

more to Cannonvale than the major centres.

Strolling along the Bicentennial or driving near

Abel Point Marina, check the collection of shops at

Shingley Beach Resort where exclusive labels and

pampering are the order of the day.

Proserpine Don’t think a small country town can

possibly be a shoppers’ heaven? Don’t bet on it!

Drive, catch a bus or taxi to experience some of

the most unique shops in Australia. Look along

the main street for one of the best homewares

shops we’ve seen anywhere. Customers say the

kitchenware ranges are to be found nowhere

else so forget the department stores (seriously)

gracious kitchen arts. Even book ahead and time

your holiday around one of the very popular

cookery classes. Next to the Prince of Wales Hotel,

walk down Dobbins Lane for Colour Me Crazy,

a shop with uncounted bright colours in ranges

from jewellery to soft furnishings. Some Danish

friends recently commented there was nothing like

it in Europe. Devotees from around Australia and

now the world have joined the locals, all thankful

for pieces to be found absolutely nowhere else.

As if that’s not enough, view beautiful sea pearls

- set and loose - at the sea pearl gallery. You can

even commission jewellery made with pearls of

all shapes, colours and sizes. As a memento of a

water-based holiday and tropical reefs, you could

do no better. Punctuate your day with a pub lunch

or coffee shop snack. End it with a physical and

spiritual pamper at the natural therapies shop in

the main street.

Take in some culture

Despite the small local population, the

opportunities for some relaxing diversions exist.

In Proserpine the Entertainment Centre stages

live shows and cinema and Bowen also has a

cinema. On a more informal note, there’s music

everywhere including down on the Esplanade

every Sunday afternoon from 2-8 pm.

Rejuvenate yourself

Experience tells us that men love to be pampered

just as much as women. On holidays, you may

need a little help to relax and you now certainly

have the time. The advertisers in this section

can help you unwind with whatever therapy you

need: massages, facials, body packs, waxes, an

array of natural therapies, you name it. Local

spas and other therapists may offer a full range

of treatments that are not necessarily expensive.

Take some advice and do it now. In fact, do it early

enough in your stay to really capitalise on the

relaxation aspect of your holiday investment. You

may love it so much you want to fortify yourself

with another treatment before you head for the

business of home.

Endota is accessible to all at Pinnacles and

Peppers Coral Coast Resorts, where the ambience

and very special treatments will have you relaxed

almost as soon as you walk in the door. On the

main street, Airlie Day Spa, the longest running

salon in the area, has an unassailable reputation

and is a great place for a spray tan too. The

shopping centres in Cannonvale have salons, and

in Proserpine are yet more.

Then there are the islands. A great excuse to

visit a beautiful, serene island resort. Island spa

settings are magnificent and the range of services

expansive, perfect for pre-wedding prep. Try

Daydream, and take a friend.

Children need a holiday too

If you holiday with children, it is important for

your relaxation process to know that the children

are also having a good time. They will certainly let

you know if their expectations are not being met!

Following is a list of some activities kids will enjoy:

Page 47: Welcome to the Whitsundays

47

• Cruise Whitsundays and Fantasea Cruises have

special arrangements for children at their reef

pontoons, including education, activities and

observation facilities.

• Island day trips under your own steam could be

to almost any island but special mention should

be made of Daydream Island where children are

entranced by the swimming pools, the themed

outdoor aquariums, play grounds and mini golf.

Hamilton also has vast entertainment for children

including a zoo, a wildlife tour, playgrounds, mini

golf, go-karts, rides around the island in a hired

buggy, non-powered water sports and, for older

children, the wire flyerand ten pin. Long Island

Resort and Club Med on Lindeman Island also

have well organised Kids’ Clubs.

• Cruises include exciting sailing experiences, an

ocean raft for older children who love speed and

beach games on Whitehaven Beach.

• Take the kids for a swim, play and picnic

lunch at the Airlie Beach Lagoon (lifeguards

patrol Mon-Fri 6am-9pm, weekends and public

holidays 8am-9pm; security patrols nightly). Send

teenagers with excess energy to the Cannonvale

foreshore skateboard bowl and basketball court.

The Holiday Therapy we have so far discussed

does not take into account the fact that the

most therapeutic pursuits also afford the

opportunity for some wonderful Whitsunday

holiday experiences such as the wonders to be

seen while snorkelling or cruising past beautiful

islands dotted like emeralds in a sea of impossible

aqua blue.

welcome TO

PROSERPINEProserpine is the ‘sweet heart’ of The Whitsundays

and the administrative centre of The Whitsundays.

Named after the goddess Persephone (or

Proserpina to the Romans), the town, like its

namesake, is redolent with abundance and beauty.

During sugar cane harvesting season, around

June to October, the sugar mill’s permeating

sweet smell of molasses adds character to every

breath you take and is a reminder of Proserpine’s

deep farming roots. The pace may be slower but

the facets of this local administrative centre are

many. There’s a healthy respect for its history,

there’s the natural beauty of a town surrounded

by emerald fields and there’s an eclectic array of

leisure activities.

Proserpine is also renowned as ‘barramundi’

country.

The past comes alive

Proserpine’s Main Street and some offshoots are a

snapshot of times past, the heyday of pioneering

cattle grazing and sugar cane families. Check out

the facades of some of the pubs and pause at the

recently renovated art deco Eldorado theatre,

built when the ‘talkies’ and newsreels were the

rage. Now it’s home to a huge pharmacy with an

enticing perfumery as well as the usual pharmacy

lines. Spot the deco and theatrical references

and, for more, take in the Proserpine Museum

where much of the original interior and seating

Whitsunday locals and visitors have been wowed for

15 years with an incredible range of jewels, precious

stones unusual gifts very unusual feminine clothing

and a way of putting it all together that you won't

see anywhere else.

Our beautiful eclectic range of stuff is sourced from all

over with Robin, the very bubbly and eccentric owner

travelling to every corner of our planet.

It's truly a girl's paradise.

From all over the world come comments such as

'this is definitely the most beautiful and crazy shop

I have seen in my travels Customers drive hours

to regularly visit the shop and groups hire buses

to come and visit from afar.

You too can take a journey into another realm a true

oasis where you'll find one of the largest collections

of jewellery in Australia showcasing designers

from all over the world, and a treasure chest

of wearable and decorative art.

Make the trip - you won'tbe sorry!

from various eateries; several authentic pubs;

a ‘counter’ lunch is not to be missed

EXPLORe the

COASTBeyond Airlie it’s the serenity and absence of crowds

that visitors comment upon. From your mainland

base numerous hidden treasures are within easy

driving distance. The bus service also links the

coast and Proserpine. For directions, distances

and a touring map, turn to few pages to 52-55.

Midge Point

Just south of Proserpine. A usually deserted beach,

swimming pools at the caravan parks up the

beach and a small hamlet township. Next door is

the world championship Turtle Point Golf Course

at Laguna Whitsundays.

Cedar Creek Falls and Conway Beach

A cool freshwater pool popular with locals and

spectacular upper and lower falls after rain (no

jumping off the top please!) . Conway and Wilsons

are small nearby villages; Conway’s park is a

pretty lunch spot. Wilsons has a boat ramp to

access nearby excellent fishing.

Dingo Beach, Hydeaway Bay and Cape Gloucester

The infinite white sands of Dingo Beach are a

beachcomber’s paradise and the fishing is excellent

(local boat hire available). Beyond Hydeaway Bay is

Gloucester Passage, where two beachfront resorts

make good lunch spots and watering holes. Or, stay

overnight to see one of the world’s best sunsets

from the west-facing beaches.

Bowen

Worth the 45 minute drive north for the famous

beaches. Most offer non-tidal, clear waters,

snorkelling, rock pools and coastal walking paths.

While in town, drive up to Flagstaff Hill, lunch at

Mullers Lagoon for its lush birdlife in the centre

of town, or devour fresh prawns from the harbour

fish co-op. Afterwards wander through the

recently completed waterfront precinct. Bowen

is also famous for its ‘Bowen Special’ mangoes in

season. If you don’t want to leave after a day trip,

just stay over at the beachfront.

TIMEDRIVE, BIKE & SCOOTThe Whitsunday Coast, from Laguna to Bowen, is

blessed with beaches, unspoiled wetlands and lush

rainforests. From your mainland base you’ll be deep

in the rainforest canopy, parked next to inland dams

or enjoying spectacular views, all within easy driving

distance. One of the big attractions of having a car

or scooter on hand is that you can go exploring, find

some great photo opportunities and some stunning

but little publicised hidden treasures. There’s so

much to see, year round.

January is the turtle-hatching season. Humpback

whales breed between July and September.

September to November is the season for flowering

trees, orchids and colourful blooms. Keep an eye

out for the ubiquitous green tree frog, rainbow

lorikeets, cockatoos (both sulphur-crested and

the impressive black version), kookaburras, rare

Proserpine rock wallabies and that denizen of

the darkness, the possum. Queensland Parks and

Wildlife Service (on Shute Harbour Road before the

Mandalay turn-off) features displays of local flora

and fauna and knowledgeable staff ready to pass on

tips and more detail.

Airlie Beach - Shute Harbour (11km)

For one of the best views of Airlie Beach at sunset

take the Mandalay Road turn off from Shute

Harbour Road, just past Jubilee Pocket as you head

towards Shute Harbour. A less common drive is to

turn onto Jasinique Drive, Flametree, and left again

into Longford Road then onto the track to Funnel

Bay. It’s palm-fringed, popular for swimming at high

tide, with the usual reservations about taking care in

stinger season and taking care on the track, whether

or not you’ve a 4x4. Closer to Shute Harbour are well

signposted bush walks in the Conway National Park,

easy accessible from Shute Harbour Road. Lions

Lookout, above Shute Harbour boasts a panorama

of the Whitsundays including the distant promise

of Hamilton Island. Go further up the hill, turn into

Harbour Avenue and follow Passage Avenue along

the edge of Whitsunday Passage, where the views

are staggering.

Airlie Beach - Cane Fields (49km)

Take in the region’s lush hills, valleys and seas of

cane, with farms and homes nestled amongst the

trees. Turn right into Riordanvale Road outside

Cannonvale and then left into Sugarloaf Road. Turn

right at the T-junction into Cannon Valley Road

then left into Strathdickie Road at ‘The Strathdickie

Smithy’. Following this route as evening comes

on between July and November may reward with

the dramatic experience of a real cane fire, set

by farmers the day before harvest in some cane

varieties.

Airlie Beach - Conway Beach (35km)

On the road to Proserpine, turn onto Conway Road

and follow the signs to Cedar Creek Falls. The falls

and the cool freshwater pool are spectacular in

the wet season, but are always worth a visit and a

quick clamber over the rocks. Travel on to Conway

and Wilson Beaches and their boat ramps for great

fishing or a relax in the postcard perfect park right

on the beach at Conway.

Laguna Whitsundays Resort (65km)

Take the right hand turnoff south of Proserpine

Airport. Visit the Marina, the lagoon, have a lovely

lunch at the Racquet Club. Golf? The course is world

class. If just for the landscaping and the vision of

the development, it’s worth the drive.

Dingo Beach - Cape Gloucester (65km)

Take the Bowen turn-off and follow the signs. The

Page 55: Welcome to the Whitsundays

55

infinite white sands of Dingo Beach are a beach-

combing paradise. Cape Gloucester is further along,

featuring two eco-friendly beachfront resorts facing

west onto Edgecumbe Bay, hence very proud of

their spectacular sunsets. While you’re in the area,

Hydeaway Bay (named after former local farmer

Mr Hyde), a small residential enclave far from the

madding crowd.

Bowen (75 km)

If you don’t plan on staying a day or so in Bowen to

really absorb the fabulous beaches, cliff top walking

trails and much more, then at least take a day drive.

Follow the directions for ‘Airlie Beach - Canefields’

above, then turn right instead of left at the Smithy.

Drive through emerald green rolling farmland until

you join the Bruce Highway. Turn right and in about

30 minutes you’ll be in Bowen. Take a drive up to

the top of the hill for a great orienting view at 360

on the Hill, drive through town to spot the famous

murals, spot the birds at Muller’s Lagoon, drive down

to the famous beaches and explore them all. Take

your snorkel gear, no need to worry about the tides

here. Simply magical. Quiet, too.

Pioneer Valley & Eungella (171 km)

Drive to Proserpine, head down the Bruce Highway

and turn right at Calen, Mt Ossa or just past

Kuttabul. All are scenic roads that lead you through

Finch Hatton (interesting pub and crafty shops)

and the Pioneer Valley to a pretty mountain road.

Drive the S-bends into Eungella, with its beautiful

rainforest and over 30 km of bush walks. The view

is spectacular. Optionally you can venture even

further into the towering rainforest and white water

country to Broken River Mountain resort. Up on the

mountain, if

you stay into

the evening,

there’s a chance

of sighting a

platypus doing

what comes

naturally.

and night lifeTROPICAL TASTESTropical nightlife in The Whitsundays can mean

possums rustling in the trees outside your window,

perhaps the splendour of a diamond-studded

southern sky when out on the water or, from the

serene to the extreme, a wild night of clubbing.

Start with sundowners at one of various local bars

and restaurants, many with spectacular views,

where an impressive cocktail, cold beer or very dry

gin will get you in the mood. The bars tend to be

fairly sophisticated yet young-at-heart places. Good

old Aussie pubs are also just around the corner.

Next stop is one of the many restaurants. Because

the culinary melange is extensive, you’ll need to

choose from the wide array of cuisines: Chinese,

Thai, French, Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese,

Mexican, Australian, Fusion. You can also enjoy

good old basic fish and chips, pizza, fast chicken

and hamburgers. The Whitsundays overall has high

quality food, wines and service at very reasonable

prices compared to most city establishments.

During a day’s shopping or a coastal drive

adventure, you’ll find coffee any way you like it,

with accompaniments, in generous proportion.

Numerous daytime scenic flights take you over the

islands to culminate in a champagne lunch at a

deserted beach or lunch at five-star Hayman where

you can eat like royalty and perhaps spot some rich

and famous guests.

The ambience of local establishments is diverse,

from no-frills or informal to upmarket and romantic.

Try breakfast under an umbrella or at one of the all-

day-breakfast places in Airlie’s main street, lunch by

a beach and pre-dinner sunset drinks.

For the kids, how about a Lagoon swim then an

early evening meal in Airlie Beach or Cannonvale

or barbecue at the lagoon? Many venues offer

children’s servings at reduced prices. Older children

won’t let you forget at least one visit to Cactus

Jack’s or the very first, original Hog’s Breath Cafe.

And if none of that appeals, there is always a good

range of takeaway or home delivered food to

consume at your accommodation.

If you feel like kicking on after dinner, Airlie Beach

turns on a party every night at the bars, pubs

and clubs in the main street but do be aware that

Queensland state law prohibits consuming alcohol

on the street or at the Lagoon.

No need to deny yourself a big night out if you

have children. Your reception will be able to suggest

a baby sitter so you can go dancing or rediscover

romance over a bottle of great wine.

Use the Quick Reference Guide on page 64 then get

all the details including hours of opening from the

following descriptions. Loosen your belts - you’re in
