WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS
HAMILTON ISLAND.
The largest of the Whitsunday Island resorts, Hamilton Island offers an experience
like no other: beaches, coral reefs, fascinating flora and fauna, fine food and
wines, and activities almost too numerous to mention.
Hamilton Island’s new world-class facilities the Hamilton Island Golf Club, the
architectural wonder of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club, Spa Wumurdaylin, and
a host of new or refurbished hotels and resorts makes it a fresh and lively place
for resort guests and day visitors. 70% of the island is national park, striking a
balance between extensive holiday facilities and the island’s striking natural
beauty.
CID HARBOUR
Cid Harbour is a large, mostly sheltered, harbour on Whitsunday Island,
Whitsundays. Commonly used by bareboats, crewed charter boats and private
vessels as an overnight stop. Some notoriety attaches to the harbour because in
1878 the general area of the harbour was the scene of a fatal attack on the
ketch Louisa Maria by Aboriginals though the exact location is not known. In
May of 1942, the Allied ships gathered in Cid Harbour prior to and post the Battle
of the Coral Sea. This deep and secluded harbour was a perfect refuge for the
fleet before setting out to battle with the Japanese Navy.
WHITEHAVEN BEACH
Whitehaven Beach is a definite "must-see" in the Whitsundays. The crystal clear
aqua waters and pristine silica sand of Whitehaven stretch over seven kilometres
along Whitsunday Island , the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays. It
defines nature at its best and provides the greatest sense of relaxation and
escape.
At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning cove where the
tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours. As the tide
shifts, the white silica sand and turquoise shades of the inlet blend seamlessly to
create a breathtaking view of swirling Whitsunday colours.
TONGUE BAY
The walking track forks to the right to a short walk up the hill to the Hill Inlet
Lookout, which offers spectacular panoramic views of Whitehaven Beach,
Solway Passage and Hill Inlet. The left fork of the track leads to a boardwalk,
which takes visitors over the ridge to Betty's Beach.
SOME OF THE DESTINATIONS WE WILL VISIT DURING OUR SAIL.
BORDER ISLAND
Boasting to be one of the best snorkelling spots in the Whitsundays archipelago, the
coral shelf that surrounds the northern end of the island has many canyons to explore
and a myriad of fish and colourful coral to see. Untroubled by man the fish are
inquisitive so expect to get up close and personal with schools of Red Schnapper,
graceful Butterfly and Angelfish; and where the shelf drops away into a vertical wall of
coral, larger fish of Maori Wrasse, Rays and Reef Sharks. If you fancy trying something
a little deeper then diving along the outer edges of the bay is a truly exhilarating
experience with plenty of caves and overhanging ledges for investigation.
After a morning spent enjoying the underwater treasures, head ashore for some
relaxation. Take the worthwhile hike through the lush green bush to the highest peak
for magnificent views back out across to Whitsunday Island and beyond. Slowly
wander back down to the sandy spit for an early evening al-fresco meal before
heading back aboard for another peaceful nights rest.
HILL INLET
Hill Inlet in the Whitsundays is a stunning inlet located at the northern end of
Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands in the
Whitsundays. As the tide shifts, the white sand and blue hues of the inlet blend
seamlessly to create a breathtaking mosaic.
Hill Inlet is best viewed from the lookout at Tongue Point on Whitsunday Island. Most
people moor their boats in Tongue Bay, take a dinghy ashore and make the short
uphill walk to the lookout for breathtaking views. If possible, try to reach the lookout
when the tide is low to fully experience the beautiful fusion of colours that emerge.
HOOK ISLAND
Hook Island is a rugged island, mostly national park, with breathtaking lookouts and
excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. The diversity of coral in the fringing reefs on the
northern shores offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving.
A visit to the historical observatory is a must-do, descending nine metres below sea
level to view coral and marine life. Several Aboriginal cave shelters can be found on
Hook Island by following the island walking tracks. Absorb the natural essence of Hook
Island by camping or staying at the Hook Island Wilderness Resort
WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS
NARA INLET
Located at the southern end of Hook Island, Nara Inlet is a deep fjord-like expanse,
surrounded either side by magnificent lush green slopes which transcend into the
clear turquoise waters and fringing reef. We will navigate our way to the end of this
scenic and secluded bay where we will find the best anchorage for stepping ashore
and exploring.
No visit to Nara Inlet should be without a trip through the bush to the Aboriginal cave
shelters and magnificent waterfall. In the steep wooded hills surrounding the inlet are
the overhanging caves, which show the signs of Aboriginal habituation going back
some eight thousand years. Bordered on both sides by piles of shells and decorated
with intricate markings and paintings these slices of ancient history are worthy of a
quick stop before moving onwards to the rock pools and spectacular waterfall. The
delightful rainwater filled pools and cool cascading shower of the waterfall provide a
welcome relief from the warm Australian sun and offer a fantastic photo opportunity
so have your camera at the ready.
BUTTERFLY BAY
The wild unspoilt beauty of Butterfly Bay will simply take your breath away. Carved
deep into the mountainous lush hillsides of Hook Island, this spectacular uninhabited
bay offers a sheltered anchorage amongst the warm emerald waters and
picturesque sandy beach.
A designated green zone, this area of the island falls under the Whitsunday Islands
National Park, a World Heritage Site, which protects the extensive reef here making it
one of the best places for snorkelling within the Whitsundays archipelago. So don
your mask and flippers and take to water and explore this magical underwater
kingdom. With some hard corals, giant Maori Wrasse, schools of Parrotfish, rainbows
of reef fish and majestic Manta Rays to see on your travels you’ll need your
underwater camera to remind you of all the colourful marine life you’ve seen.
When you surface for air, take to the dinghy and head ashore for a leisurely picnic
underneath the dappled shade of a mangrove tree and delight in the colonies of
butterflies, which gather here in the shade and along the creek bed. Take one of the
nearby bush trails up to the lookout point for impressive views down over the bay and
surrounding reef before heading back aboard for a sundowner and another restful
nights sleep in paradise.
