President’s Note: The ABAT board has been working hard as usual. As we continue to contemplate the future retirement of some of our most valued ABAT members, I find myself with mixed feelings. First, jealousy as I don’t see myself retiring anytime in the near future!! Second a feeling of nervousness as I wonder how can we possibly exist without them? However, after having the privilege of serving as ABAT president and being able to meet our newest passing ABAT’s, I am truly encouraged. They are young, smart, and hard working. They are also dedicated to ABAT and have been eager to become involved in ABAT committees and projects. Your ABAT board of directors continues to take on big projects such as Life Long Learning, putting education at the forefront (with webinars and learning opportunities), re-assessing our credentialing process, and taking on difficult discussions as to how we can attract new qualified individuals to ABAT. Our board of directors has also spent much time working with AACT updating our website, putting together a wonderful symposium at the national meeting, and of course, writing the ABAT exam, which would challenge any of our best candidates on a good day. Of all the duties of ABAT President, I have to say, meeting each of our members, talking with them and getting to know them has been the best part of this job. We each come from different practices, have different ideas, but we all have a common purpose- to preserve ABAT and make this the best professional membership we can. Therefore, whenever I get frustrated at work and think “what is the point?” I look at what my fellow colleagues are doing. I am always amazed at what they are accomplishing and it humbles me to be a part of this group. When I look over this newsletter and see all the publications and presentations and awards, I can only think…..”Damn girl, you better get back to work!” WELCOME TO THE 2016 Winter ABAT NeWSLETTER WITH ALL YOUR LATEST NEWS & UPDATES RELATED TO ABAT

President’s Note:

Welcome to New Secretary-Treasurer:

Greg Wedin Greg Wedin came to the Board of Directors meeting in San Francisco to observe the proceedings and to learn from our outgoing Secretary Treasurer David Baker. Reminder from the entire ABAT Board of Directors: Please remember that it is your responsibility to make sure that your e-mail address is up-to-date with both ABAT and the AACT office. The AACT office e-mail list is used to send out election information. You also need to make sure that you can receive surveys from survey monkey or give us an alternate email address that can take survey monkey so you can vote.

ABAT Symposium: Our Scientific Affairs committee (Co-Chaired by Howard McKinney and Fred Aleguas) organized the symposium entitled, “Protecting Your Liability in Practice: It’s Not a Roll of the Dice”. The symposium speakers were Jack Snyder, MD, PhD, JD, RAC and Allison Mueller PharmD, DABAT. The session covered some common pitfalls related to risky practices that may lead to legal action, even if there was not a bad outcome. They even discussed how and when to seek expert assistance. The real-life case examples were well received by the audience. For the 2016 meeting in Boston, Fred and Howard studied the needs assessment and developed the symposium title “Toxicology’s Mythologies”. The idea is both a historical overview of the sources of much of the dogma in clinical toxicology, and a discussion of some illustrative specific examples, along with exploration of the data and methods to measure the quality of this data. They have a speaker and are meeting the deadlines for the initial paperwork.

ABAT Business Meeting and 7th Annual Toxicology Residents/Fellows Reception:

On Sunday October 11, from 11:00am to 2pm, the ABAT meeting was held at the Perry’s on

the Embarcadero. We handed out 6 new ABAT Candidate certificates at the 2015 business

meeting: Sheila Goertemoeller, Rachael Gorodetsky, Dayne Laskey, Nicole Reid, Rachel

Schult, and Karen Thomas. The Annual Toxicology Residents/Fellows Reception was another

grand event this year due to the hard work from Bryan Hayes and Tom Kearney.

ABAT invited members and guests to attend the annual Business Meeting and ABAT Fellow’s

Reception. Again this year we secured an off-site location for our meeting and reception at the

Perry’s on the Embarcadero. We were able to step away from the meeting site and enjoy

breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay from the patio while we enjoyed a light lunch and

refreshments served in the restaurant’s enchanting patio. It was a chance to leave the

meeting hotel, walk a few blocks along the famous Embarcadero in San Francisco, to relax on

the patio with ABAT colleagues and enjoy the afternoon. We are looking forward to the

reception, which has grown to be one of our favorite events each year at the meeting in Boston

in 2016.

nothing to report!-mw

Certification Renewal Committee:

Based upon revised information received, there are 18 ABAT members up for

certification renewal in 2016 and include : Jess Benson, Barbara Crouch, Michele

Zanter, Tom Kearney, Cynthia Morris-Kukoski, Kevin Rynn, Susan Smolinske, Christine

Stork, Anna Rouse Dulaney, Fred Aleguas, Stacey Bangh, Nicole Ries, Sharon

Ternullo, Ilene Anderson, Bryan Hayes, Raymond Ho, Keith McCain, and Ashely Webb.

An email has been sent out to all of them already since there are some changes to the

process. This upcoming year is the first time that the Life Long Learning Addendum to

the form will be completed as well. Since five years of information will not be available

for this addendum, it is understood that the items completed will be phased in. For

example, the LLL document has the following requirements: 30 CEU’s over 5 years, 4

LLSA Articles or LLSA Live sessions at NAACT within 5 years, and 2 Journal Club

Webinars over the 5 years. Since the arrangement of the LLSA Articles has not been

solidified as of this time, this piece will not be evaluated. The certification renewal form

and the LLL addendum have been emailed to those 18 members. All forms are due by

7/1/2016. Along with this newsletter, we are sending copies of the LLL form and the

certification renal form to help prepare for the next renewal cycle. The certification

renewal committee will then begin the process of evaluating the submissions. Feel free

to contact Dawn Sollee if you have any questions at [email protected].

Announcements/Requests:

ABAT is looking for members who are interested in being part of the ABAT Education

Committee. We are looking to form a special subcommittee of those who are interested in

tackling the project of bringing awareness and education to EM Clinical Pharmacists, CSPIs,

and other possible organizations. We are working towards their possible opportunity to

become involved in becoming an ABAT diplomate. If you are interested, please contact Bryan

Hayes at [email protected]
