WELCOME TO THE MARCH EDITION

So; we are now into the business end of the season ramping up with 6 patrols each weekend, endless training groups and competition beginning to take on a serious edge. Saturday 15th February Mullaloo hosted the Champion patrol competition. This is a fantastic event with set scenarios in which patrol teams have to encounter and resolve within a set time period. The senior teams for example have 12 minutes to contain some very difficult lifesaving challenges. If you like a bit of excitement then this is for you. Barbara Carter is our most excellent coach who expects results.

Our club is fortunate to have within our members many champions. This time around Gareth Nichols embarked on his greatest challenge. Gareth was chosen to compete for Australia at the Sochi winter Olympics in the Bobsleigh event. Gareth was at number 3 in the fours event. Keep an eye out for our own beach sprinter when he returns from Russia. Please visit our website for a more detailed history of this magnificent achievement. He’s the bloke who would throw the tractor tyre about the beach!

Cool Runnings!!

The volunteer lifesavers have demonstrated that they too are champions in their own right. It’s one thing to train and remain proficient but when the time arrives to save a life and the job is done without fuss and done well and in full view of a desperate crowd of beach patrons then I am all too proud of my courageous volunteer colleagues.

In keeping with image I would like you to notice this photo above. If we acknowledge international flag flying criteria for advanced spoon benders then one could assume that we as a club are in trouble. According to Kirra patrol the morning was beautiful but I wonder what was really going on. Anyway our dutiful public gathered between the flags completely unaware of the upheaval.

Final word – I was visiting SLSA in Sydney recently and I noticed a poster on their team room wall with a quote:

We are a ‘can do’ movement.Optimistic at every turn.Eternally vigilant.Forever serving Australia. For we believe in life.In the sanctity of life. And in our great Australian way of life.We support it, protect it, celebrate it.We are Surf Life saving.

FROM THE PRESIDENT CARLO TENAGLIA

It seems that the topic of “sharks” has been in everyone’s conversation the last few weeks and with the drum line program well under way (and highly visible in front of the Club), many people have asked me what does it mean for the safety of our members. In essence, we don’t have a definitive answer, so we should keep doing what we always do and that is staying vigilant, performing our standard risk assessments and making sure that we always make our personal safety our number one priority.

SLSWA have made some changes to the shark policy and effectively the major difference is that should a shark greater than 3 meters be identified within 1km of the beach, then we are to close the beach and an area 1km either side. This identification is likely to occur from boats or the SLSWA rescue helicopter. The existing policy will still stand with any sightings from the beach of any marine activity.

With regard to the shark detection program that Mullaloo SLSC is working on; I can report that our proof of concept “command and control” system is well and truly in the testing phase. It is now communicating with the tag receiver buoy in front of the Club and receiving messages from the Fisheries detectors for any tagged shark detections and setting off our test lights and alarm. There is a bit more testing to go, however, it is shaping up very well. If anyone would like a demonstration, they are more than welcome to contact me to make a time. In the next phase we’ll be looking at extending the coverage and raising the funding to achieve this. We have already had one generous donation from a member of the club and we will provide more information in the near future.

By the way, you may have noticed some film crews around the Club recently. Both the ABC and Winfall films have both been filming and interviewing people for some documentaries to be shown later this year. Keep an eye out for these and as we hear of dates and times, we will detail them.

Over the last few months, our lifesaving patrols have been extremely busy involved in a number of resuscitations and suspected spinal injuries. I can’t remember a busier time on the beach for first aid cases and it may be a result of our beach getting busier. I am very proud of the way our patrols have responded to these cases and it shows we have some great people provided with great training protecting our community. Since Christmas, however, it seems that some of our patrols are down on members, so please make sure that if you can’t make your rostered patrol, that you arrange a suitable substitute so that we continue to provide a great service to our community.

Our Junior, Senior and Masters areas of the Club are very busy and are starting to get to the business part of the year with competition. There are a number of carnivals being held, including some at the Club, so I would ask that you can get involved either as a competitor, water

safety, officiating or generally helping out. I have been involved in both Senior and Junior competition for many years and believe that it is not just about winning medals, but challenging yourself to improve and succeed in achieving your own personal goals. I urge any member who is interested to have a go at the competitions and be involved.

I was lucky a couple of weeks ago to travel to Sydney with a touring team from Mullaloo and watch our interstate competitors compete and be a part of the Manly carnival. It was just fantastic to watch our competitors doing so well in tough conditions against some of the best competitors in Australia. To hear Mullaloo being called over the loudspeaker in many races, just shows how well we are doing overall. We had some amazing results and I am sure you can read about them later in the newsletter. Also we had some Boat crews travel to Stockton in NSW to compete at the ASRL championships against the best in Australia.

So with a couple of months of patrols left and competition going into April, there will be plenty to see, do and hear about in the future. Make sure you keep an eye on our Website and Facebook pages and bulk email to keep up with the news and events happening.

See you on the beach.

EDUCATION LUCY CLEARY, MANAGER EDUCATION

It’s been a busy time since the last Newsletter. During that time, there have been a number of members newly qualified as lifesavers! Well done.

Simon Gidley led a team which included Phill Dee, Alistair Cook, Vicki O’Raw and Tayla Tenaglia who trained the following new lifesavers: Lewis Bennett, Chantal Boon, Tom Hillen, Christian Joder, Tyron Kimble, Rachael Madge, Deborah Mills, Scott Morton, Kyle Muller, Ryan Nolan, Geoff Rosich, Simon Russell, Nick Ryan, Kyle Wenn and Nat Wright. James Breed also joined this squad to complete an in-depth refresher.

The Assessors complimented the group on the quality of their performance. Thanks to Mark Cleary, David Rossow and Anne-Marie Widermanski from Mullaloo and Garry Bunford from Sorrento for conducting the assessment on 18/01/2014.

Sandy Clarke and Lyn Brosens led a team which included, Lloyd Brosens and Louis Cheeseman in running a course held every day for two weeks – a big commitment – just as well there is such a thing as annual leave! The following new lifesavers will be welcome additions to the patrol lists: Caitlin Anthony, Jack Beattie, Tacey Clarke, Meg Dean, Joshua Elsom, Eve Fisher, Grace Giglia-Smith, Jaka Grandlic, Charlotte Green, Jack Green, Luke Hugo, Taylah Johnson, James Jovanovski, Kaj Kremer, Jasmine Laing, Rebecca Laing, Brandon Lena, Sathya Robinson, Maxine Singh, Dylan Spiby, Clay Uyen, Jessica Willesee, Jennifer Wood and Lillie Wright.

The Assessors were highly satisfied with the group’s performance. Thanks to Tracey Bartlett, Tony Greenfield, Mark Hills and David Rossow from Mullaloo and John Garnett from Swanbourne-Nedlands for conducting the assessment on 19/01/2014.

A very proud new bronzie is Jenny Wood – she is grinning from ear to ear as she celebrates achieving a personal goal. Jenny spoke highly of the commitment of the Trainers and also the supportive environment within the group - where everyone was encouraging, both verbally and practically. Jenny was particularly appreciative of the speedsters in the Run-Swim-Run who completed their own race, then ran back to encourage her to achieve as well. Jenny is of the strong belief that young people in our surf club are respectful, loyal and generally know how to have a good time - safely - while watching out for their mates. These people are our future!

A Silver Medallion – Basic Beach Management course has been run, in association with Sorrento SLSC. The following eight club members have attended both Workshops and

completed the required activities/paperwork: Laurie deMamiel, Guy Edwards, Kevin Fettes, John Hillen, Mark Hills, Liam McGuinness, Brenton Tenaglia and Craig Thrum. Another three members have started the course. The program was jointly facilitated by Mark Hills and Anne-Marie Widermanski (Mullaloo) and Garry Bunford (Sorrento).

On a sadder note – Lucy, our Manager of Education, has decided to complete her service in this position at the end of the current season – so – the invitation is out there! So what is involved and what is required?

1. A passion for the role

2. Attention to detail

3. Ability to organize, delegate and multi-task

There is a Position Description available – on request.

Finally – the number of Trainers and Assessors has been steadily falling over the past few years, as long-time people pull back, some shorter term people decide this area of surf club service is not for them and possibly others are challenged by the paperwork! That said – the more the better – as strong teams can be built and the workload shared. If you are interested, or would like further information – please see the vacancy advertised elsewhere in the Newsletter, or contact a senior Trainer/Assessor. The challenges are there – but the service is rewarding and you certainly get out of it what you put in.

LIFESAVING ANDREW MANNING, MANAGER LIFESAVING SERVICES

So much has happened since the last newsletter. I would firstly like to congratulate our trainers and assessors. What an excellent job the education team have done preparing us for all the action that clubbies have been involved in so far this season. The commitment shown by you as volunteers to keeping your awards current and up skilling certainly pays off here at Mullaloo. Job well done.

Members of the club have responded to incidents in the Dome and Tom Simpson Park. While these areas aren’t patrolled by the club, we normally attend as first responders. I am asking that extreme caution be taken when leaving the beach. People don’t always understand what we are doing as we assist patients or victims and may become aggressive. Look after each other as aggressive behaviour towards first responders treating patients is not uncommon.

Kirra Patrol were successful in saving one of their own, due to the efforts of Catriona Hopper, Mark Hopper, Gavin Dickson and Craig Thrum. A couple of weeks later and Kirra Patrol responded to an incident at the Dog beach, with the assistance of Sorrento SLSC.

While off duty and out for a paddle, Katrina West and Kay Smith along with Karen Briggs and Stuart Hudson, responded to calls for assistance with a rescue and resuscitation. Wiamea attended and a marathon CPR effort was maintained with additional members of the public until the ambulance arrived. Team work and training ensured that the best possible outcome was achieved.

Suspected spinal and neck injuries have also been prevalent again this season. More recently, Lloyd Brosens, Stuart Clarke, Tacey Clarke, Kaj Kremer, Callum Drum, Matt Colbourne and Brenton Tenaglia rescued a patient with a major neck injury at Mullaloo North Point, their care and skill provided the right management of the situation. The patient is recovering well.

Please remember people may have come out of the water, before realising the possibility of injury. As trained: suspected spinal patients must only be moved when instructed by the ambulance staff or in danger of further injury. Don’t forget those spinal straps.

January’s Abalone patrol went smoothly with low swell and low tide making it impossible to beach IRBs anywhere along the coast.

Thank you to trainers and attendees of the Silver Medallion Patrol Captains course. Please congratulate Kevin Fettes and Craig Thrum as they take over Kirra Patrol. As Phill Dee maybe out of action for the remainder of the season I will be covering his McCarthy shifts.

Competitors please remember now is a great time to get those 16 patrol hours up for next season. The weather is much nicer and beats trying to get all those hours in December. Please remember it is your Club, your Patrol that is let down when you don’t attend rostered patrols. Where possible try to find a substitute or better still do it yourself.

See you on the beach,Andrew Manning

MITCH CLEARY

Mitchell has been making slow but steady progress in his recovery from the brain injury he received on 2nd March 2013. Mitch is still located at Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital but it is planned to relocate him in mid March to the new Rehabilitation facility at Oats St in East Vic Park. This is run by the Brightwater Group. He has also been undergoing some complimentary rehab programs which appear to be having some positive outcomes.

He is able to move his lower left arm so far and is able to assist with his feeding and drinking at present. We are hopeful that the Peg feeding tube into his stomach will be removed by the end of February as he is learning to drink unthickened fluids successfully.

Mitch is able to come home on day leave occasionally. He has spent both Christmas and Australia Day at home thus far. On both occasions he was able to visit Mullaloo beach for a swim in the beach wheelchair. Thanks to all the patrols and friends for their assistance on both of these occasions and to the wider membership and community for their well wishes, thoughts and generosity.

Mark and Lucy Cleary and families.

Regards,Lucy Cleary

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES DAWN JONES, MANAGER JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

Cast your mind back to December….I bet some of you remember your first ever Junior Carnival, the Ted Scott Marathon and Santa dropping in on one of our surf boats! Then January continued to be an action packed month with two carnivals in successive weekends! For February we have had the State qualifying carnival. That’s it in a nutshell but some events need fleshing out a bit!

The traditional Ted Scott Marathon is always a spectacle. It’s great having an event where all club members participate. The mass starts for each age group are impressive as is the determination of the kids completing whatever part of the course that they do in their Age Group. For those U14’s who had their SRC it was their first opportunity to do the full course. Congratulations to Owen Vorster and Ashton Brinkworth blitzed the field finishing 3rd and 4th over all!! It was also good to see the U14’s sticking together and motivating each other to keep going.

Many of our U11’s–14’s have now competed in carnivals at Sorrento and Leighton and a good number went down to the Country Carnival in Denmark. I have heard great things about the way the group competed and outside of competition sounded so much fun with everyone mucking in and getting into the spirit of being away as a club.

Secret Harbour was a great location for the State Qualifiers but had some challenging conditions, some great runners to come in on with the waves but the “ breeze” (I can still not quite grasp why it’s called that!) came in early and just gathered strength as the carnival progressed. The U 11’s finished around 2pm dealing with conditions very different to what we are used to at Mullaloo. I was soooo proud of them, just accepting what they had to compete in and just going for it! We have a good number of individual qualifiers and States are looking good for Mullaloo!

The success of our competitors can be attributed to the commitment and determination of our fantastic children who are well supported by the clubs coaches at training sessions. Mike, Lyn, Geoff, Gavin, Jenni and Kirsten are doing a great job with an ever increasing number of kids coming along to Tuesday and Thursday board training. Rick and Kerry on a Monday night have been working on skills of flags and sprints. Thanks to all these coaches and others who fit in and help out where needed.

COMPETITIONS/EVENT WRAP UPS...

Well, so much to say from December last year to now... it’s been a busy few months and heaps still to go!!

Surf Boat Series Round 3 @ Port Bouvard, 15 December 2013In offshore, 2m swell, seven Mullaloo crews were tested – that’s our rowers, sweeps and our equipment/boats. All walked away from some exciting rowing.

Two crews made the finals, with the Open Womens crew Twistees 3rd and Open Mens crew Barracudas 2nd.

The Steelers were also impressive, coming 2nd in the U19s final. Our new U19s Black crew, fresh out of the Development Squad, did well to compete throughout the day in both the U19s (coming 4th in the final) and Reserves category.

Ted Scott Marathon @ Mullaloo, Sunday 22 DecemberOn Sunday 22 December, Mullaloo SLSC had its traditional annual Ted Scott Marathon. The event was created by one of our Life members Ted Scott back in 1969 to challenge lifesavers to demonstrate their endurance skills with swimming and running from one end of the beach to the other. It is about participation and is open to Seniors and Juniors alike. There are various lengths of the course to cater for all club age groups. Several hundred of our members ran, swam and cheered in the most perfect conditions Mullaloo had to offer.

Crossing over the line first for the senior competitors, was last years winner Ben Jones, u17 male in 55 minutes. The first female competitor was u15, Sienna Lipscombe in just over an hour.

It was a fantastic morning with the Club truly embracing the spirit of the tradition.

Surf Boat Series Round 4 @ Scarboro, 12 January 2014In typical ‘Scarboro Dumpers’, our 8 Mullaloo crews worked extremely well together, supporting each other and rowing well.

Two Open crews made finals again, with mens crew Barracudas coming 2nd and womens crew Twistees coming 5th. Our U19s boys maintained their form in their age final, with Steelers coming 2nd and Black coming 3rd.

Club Points DayWith all three Points Days completed:Sunday 8/12/13 – 51 clubbies attendedSunday 5/1/14 – 58 clubbies attendedSunday 16/2/14 – 38 clubbies attended,

the Surf Sports Awards night will reveal the champions and runner ups for the season. With a full calendar throughout the season, numbers for the points days were less than expected. Let’s hope with everyone now back from leave and various other competitions that the Club Championships will see a bigger turn out!

Thanks Alison Gerrard, Carlo Tenaglia, Gayle and Russell Gould and Katrina West for your assistance with these days.

Senior Premiership Round 2 @ Trigg, Sunday 12 JanuaryAfter the city’s hottest night in over 110 years of records at 32°C following it up with an equally hot day and little to no surf. A relatively small group of 29 competitors fronted for competition. Stand out performances from Ben Jones getting first in u17 ironman and surf race, 3rd in u17 ski – an ironman in the making; Josh Clarke first in u19 flags, sprints and 2km; Brett Gould first in u19 board and 4th in Opens ironman; Nic de Bomford 3rd in u17 ironman and 4th in Open surf race; Mitch Cavanagh 3rd in Open flags. Well done to Alex Baker coming 3rd in u17 ski race, developing well and one to watch.

Surf Boat Sunset Sprints Round 2 @ North Cottesloe, Friday 17 JanuaryIn the second of this special series, the usual ‘Freo Doctor’ came howling in, resulting in the referee deciding everyone would do ‘Left Hand Turns’. This novelty worked in Mullaloo’s favour, with the Barracudas winning the male category with a cracker turn and explosive sprint rowing.

The conditions also suited the experienced Marlins womens crew, coming in 3rd in the womens category – well done development squader Rebecca Singleton.

Mullaloo also were drawn first from the ‘hat’, to be Winners of a Yalumba wine tasting evening ... we’ll keep you posted of this upcoming event.

Surf Sports – Sandy Clarke, General Manager Surf Sports continued...

Senior Premiership Round 3 and Surf Boat Series Round 5 @ Denmark (Country Carnival), Sunday 26 JanuaryDenmark did not live up to its ‘big wave’ reputation, as the swell dropped off for the Sunday Carnival. With 47 competitors making the trip to Denmark as other Surf related events coincided, 31 of these were boaties. Leaving a small but effective group of 16 to challenge the so-so surf.

Stand out performances on the Sunday were Jake Smith first in both the u17 ironman and 2km run; Wes Thomson first in the u15 ironmand and 2km. The males also teamed up to win the u17 surf team and u17 taplin relay. Well done.

Not much surf made for a good ‘rowing’ test of our seven crews. Best of the Carnival were Twistees, coming in 2nd in the Open Womens final. Our Open mens crew, Barracudas, made the final and came 4th.

U19s crew Steelers came 3rd in their age group final and also made the Reserves final, coming 6th after a big day of rowing). Our U19s Black crew came 4th in the U19s final.

Thanks Bret Madden for taking hold of the reigns for all in Denmark and thanks Fiona Gatey for the Boston Brewery beverage venue!!

State Team representatives from Mullaloo @ Sydney, 21-26 JanuaryMullaloo had four state representatives, pictured below (l to r) Brett Gould, Wes Gould, Nic de Bomford and Josh Clarke compete for WA at the Newport and Ryde Aquatic Interstate competition in Sydney. Kara Elliott (inset) also toured with the team as part of the State Development squad and particpated in various training and development sessions. WA finished 3rd overall, a fantastic result.

The boys performed exceptionally well finishing in the top four for almost all their events.

Mullaloo Touring Team @ Manly/Freshwater, 24-27 JanuaryAs a reward for their efforts and success in the previous season and in the pre-season series, and to build their competitiveness against the best in Australia, the Club subsidized the following members to travel to Sydney for the Manly/Freshwater Carnivals: Caitlin Anthony, Alex Baker, Laura Edmunds, Poppy Edmunds, Eric Fortmann, Ben Jones, Tayla Tenaglia, Lisa West, Grace Wilkinson, Paige Wood, and Sam Wood.

MANLY was a huge event with competitors from all states, a relatively good surf and plenty of competition. The big guns like Eckstien, Berg, Smith and Pooley to name a few vying for points in the ironman.

Surf Sports – Sandy Clarke, General Manager Surf Sports continued...

Mullaloo rang through the announcer’s microphone, such pleasant news for a small team placing 30th out of 78 competing clubs. They even pronounced it right!

Our competitors entered everything they could with the following making finals:

Open female ski relay final: Tayla, Laura, Lisa 6thOpen female single ski final: Laura 10th

u19 male surf race final: Brett 2ndu19 male beach sprint final: Josh 7thu19 male ironman final: Brett 8thu19 male taplin final: Ben, Sam, Brett 14thu19 male board relay final: Brett, Wes, Sam 14th

u17 male surf race final: Nic 3rdu17 male surf race final: Wes 7thu17 female sprint final: Grace 7thu17 male single ski final: Alex 8thu17 male surf race final: Ben 13thu17 male ironman final: Wes 13thu17 male board relay final: Ben, Eric, Alex 15th

Well done Poppy Edmunds on her first u17 ski race in competition and whilst a little overwhelming for our u15s a taste of Aussies was in the air – great inspiration.

FRESHWATER unfortunetly was an absolute disaster surf zone, with two heats of the open ironman competition just completed, the water events of the day were shut down. It was a true respect of skill and technique to watch some of the best ironmen in the state smash through the atrocious conditions.

Not to be to let down from the cancellation, our water babies took to the only events still running which were beach. Mullaloo came 11th overall out of 50 competing clubs with the following finals results:

u19 male sprint final: Josh 2ndu19 male beach relay final: Josh, Eric, Alex, Brett 2ndu19 male beach flags final: Josh 4th

Open female beach relay: Grace, Poppy, Lisa, Tayla 4th

Surf Boat Sunset Sprints Round 3 @ Sorrento, Saturday 1 FebruaryREALLY?!! Who’s idea was it to row in the afternoon in Perth? Sorrento was a ‘roller coaster’. With very few clubs competing, it ended up a mixture of male and female crews doing ‘training session races’. Our four crews Marlins, Twistees, Barracudas and Steelers had a wild time of it.

Champion Lifesaver State Championships @ Leighton, Sunday 2 FebruaryWell, with a little shaky start at not being able to enter the water due to not just one, but two “marine sightings” in the morning, the comp was well underway with the theory and resuscitation components. Then the all clear for entry to water finished the competition and our competitors performing well for Mullaloo.

Open Male – Wes Gould (unable to contest his u17 age group due to lack of competitors opted to compete in Opens) Bronze medal winner.

Open Female – Rachael Crabb, just missing a medal coming 4th and Tayla Tenaglia 6th.

u19 Male – Brett Gould, first with Gold medal and Josh Clarke, Silver medal.

u15 Female – Hannah Strudwick 5th.

Senior Premiership Round 4 @ Scarboro, Sunday 9 FebruaryThis event was looking healthier with 41 competitors – where have you all been? Some fantastic competition on the skis for the morning across the board, stand outs Matt Hibben / Laura Edmunds, first in the mixed double ski, Laura / Lisa West 2nd in female open double ski, Tayla Tenaglia / Laura / Lisa 3rd in the open female ski relay and Andrew Doyle / Brad Taylor as well as Sam Wood / Matt in the open male double ski final. Our u17 and u19 males again were strong performers.

Special mention for Amy Barker, our only u19 female competitor for the season, well done.

With a full compliment of our male competitors at the carnival, it was fitting that between events they pooled together which I am sure is an all time first for Mullaloo not one, not two, but three open beach relay teams!! Placing 2nd, 3rd, 4th – did it matter, they cleaned up and had a ball doing it!

ASRL Open Touring Teams @ Stockton, 7-9 FebruaryWith the surf boat section growing so strongly and successfully over the last few years, it warranted our Club subsidizing three of our most competitive crews to travel to Stockton in February.

Our top crews, Open men – Barracudas (Steve Hilyear, Stuart Clarke, Patrick Squires, Marcus Blake), Open women – Twistees (Simone Fountain, Kirstie Briggs, Helen Grimes, Kylie Rolston) and rising stars u19s male – Steelers (Jack Vermeulen, Peter Hainsworth, Emmet Grimes, Luke Worthington) - all swept by Paul Beattie, performed well at the Navy Surfboat Series and deserved the opportunity to compete against the other States at this huge event.

Twistees rowed well throughout their 3 round robin races on the Saturday, gaining enough points to get to the elimination rounds of the second day. After getting through the next round, their campaign ended with a tough start in round 5.

The Barracudas were on the pace throughout their 3 round robin races, but found that you can not give the other crews any head start with their mistakes. They missed getting to day 2 by one point.

Steelers found out how good the ‘big’ Inter-State U19s crews were, especially in the afternoon onshore swell. This was a valuable lesson that they have been inspired by.

Champion Patrol State Championships @ Mullaloo, Saturday 15 FebruaryIt has been several years since Mullaloo has competed in Champion Patrol, a true test of all lifesaving skills and techniques. Barbara Carter who has coached teams to both State and National medals for the club in this event, once again managed a group, many new to the competition and complexities of the event.

Mullaloo hosted this championship and also provided expert assessors for the event, Mark Hills and Dave Rossow and Barbar Carter thank you and thanks to the ‘volunteer’ patients!

The team above (l to r) of Brett Gould, Brad Hill, Lisa West, (Barbara Carter), Rachael Crabb, Brenton Tenalia and Tayla Tenaglia, received a SILVER medal for their efforts. Fantastic!

First Aid State Championships @ Mullaloo, Sunday 16 FebruaryAgain, Mullaloo hosted this lengthy carnival providing expert assessors and judges, Mark Hills and Anne-Marie Widermanski. Some particularly challenging scenarios for the few teams we had entered this year. Well done to all and in particular our u15 first timers!

Senior Premiership Round 5 @ Leighton, Sunday 23 FebruaryFor the first time, Mullaloo were able to field two teams in the Lifesaver Relay State Qualifying heats (held at this event, some 3 weeks before States). The ‘Blue’ Team (Barracudas surf boat crew/Sam Wood/Brett Gould/Eric Fortmann/Grace Wilkinson) made it through the State Titles (to defend their title) by coming in 3rd while the ‘Yellow’ Team (Stroke More surf boat crew/Wes Gould/Ben Jones/Josh Clarke/Lucy Gates) narrowly missed out by finishing 5th. To note, we had no open competitors to field either the ski, board or swim legs and still managed to put forward very strong competitive crews.

With only 21 competitors competing at the remaining events due to the Rottnest Swim being on the same weekend. Our competitors showed true team spirit in fielding as many team events possible with the mix. Great performances from Wes Gould – first in u17 ironman, 2nd

in u17 surf race, Eric Fortmann first in u17 board, Ben Jones 2nd in both ironman and board and 3rd in surf race. Then the trio of Wes, Eric and Ben teamed up for the u17 taplin and won it. The ‘six’ man taplin for our handful of u17s and u19s at the end, racing against some huge open men powerhouses was a great experience for all.

Masters State Championships @ Trigg, Saturday 1 MarchWell, 36 competitors (excludes the 18 boaties) was all that Mullaloo could muster for the Masters event of the year! A far cry from previous years entries. With injuries, sickness and travel all impacting on the final numbers – yes we had it all. Bravo to all that competed, what a sweltering heat indeed – but not enough to stop the engines of our competitors.

Mullaloo masters finished 4th overall for this season – this included points from Pool Rescue States mid last year.

Our veterans of the sea Jeff Vidler and Kay Smith along with youngin’ Christie Harvey topping the individuals medal tally. Some out of the woodwork beachies showing their wares and performing well Jarred Moon, Jeremy Smith along with Grahame Deans and Trevor Bulley. Trusted reign holder of the fort Pam Bubryzcki (handed from Jenny Orme who wrangled some turf with her wrist coming off second best, thanks Jenny for the organisation prior) had a bling affair of her own and teamed up with some medal tally holders like Sarah Gregson, Gayle Gould, Karen Briggs and Christie Harvey. The gents scored well with numerous winning combinations of Jason Snell, James Breed, Paul Bennett, Craig Thrum, Kevin Fettes and Jeff Vidler to name a few.

Surf Sports – Sandy Clarke, General Manager Surf Sports continued...

Fresh from her bronze qualification, Jenni Wood premiered at the event and scored some bling to boot!

We will have to check the history books, but it was perhaps the Club’s most successful Masters Surf Boat State Titles, fielding 4 crews that all got medals. Even Steve Part got a silver medal by sweeping the Albany 160s mens crew.

Our newest Masters Boaties medal winners:180s men, Pink Floyds, Bronze (the ‘Steven Bradburys’ of surf boats – coming from 5th to 3rd with some great rowing – in the end – and bravery and skill on a wave), Chris Hainsworth, Brett Wenn, Tim Buytels, Terry ‘Uppy’ Upston, sweep Rob Amos.

140s women, Something Weird, Silver, Cathy Park, Alia Luhn, Maren Scriven, Dara Mills, sweep Rob Amos, their moto ... “Just Get in and Row”.

And now our most successful crews:140s women, Marlins, Gold for many years in a row. Claire Whitelaw, Rachel Kremer, Sandy Clarke, Rachel Greene, Sweep Steve Part. It was a stand out performance that sets the tone for soon defending their Aussies Masters Gold Medal.

160s men, Stroke More, Gold, defending their title, Andy Penney x 5 in a row, Stuart Clarke x 4, Richard Calnon x 2, Reuben Gregor first timer. Sweep Rob Amos.

So, the girls versus the boys... the verdict is in – if we include the masters pool state champs (Mandy Lee featured here) and the surf boat results...

STOWAWAY ABOARD SURF BOAT

Before the Ted Scott Marathon, the Development Squad Surf Boat rowers unknowingly transported a “stowaway” around their training session. Can you imagine their surprise when they pulled the boat to the dry sand to hear scurrying inside the boat and a long slender tail sticking out a drain hole.

Mr Lizard (about 30cm long and not a bobtail!) must have taken residence in the boat while it was sitting on the upstairs hard stand and had a very bad day when he found himself swishing back’n’forth inside the boat during training. His day got worse when he exited the boat and took refuge in the boat/ski/board shed.

So, unless he produces his membership card and signs up for a Bronze course, if u see him, please ask him to find a more appropriate home – like to dunes!

So, to continue our saga of our stowaway lizard ... with Saturday morning’s surf boat training session finished, boat washed down and rubbish (eg. spare water bottles) put into bin, there was “that rustling sound” again ... This time in the bin! Our stowaway lizard spent the week locked in the shed and was obviously getting hungry, so climbed into the best smelling ‘restaurant’ he could find.

Thankfully for him, this made it easy to carry him to more appropriate residence – the dunes.

When last seen, our stowaway lizard was running faster than Husain Bolt to the safety of a nearby bush. Happy trails Mr Lizard – come back again when you have Club membership and grown legs long enough to row.

Once again Mullaloo organised the Youth River Cruise for Surf Club members aged 15–17 years. This was an event not to be missed and was held on a beautiful summers evening on the 28th of February.

The cruise was sold out and attended by a total of 90 clubbies from 10 Clubs; Quinns Rock, Mullaloo, Sorrento, Floreat, City of Perth, Cottesloe, Fremantle, Mandurah, Port Bouvard and Busselton. Passengers were collected from their respective clubs by 2 buses and were transported to Barrack Street Jetty where they boarded the River Bells. They enjoyed pizzas, cool drinks and danced the night away to the awesome beats pumped out by our very own DJ, Josh Clarke, whilst they cruised along the river. It was magnificent to witness the interaction between youth from different Surf Clubs in a social environment. The cruise had to come to an end and everyone reluctantly boarded the buses to be transported back to their clubs, some exchanging phone numbers before leaving.

Many thanks to all who attended the cruise, to Josh Clarke, Tracey and Tayla Tenaglia, Chrissie Payne, Brett and Wes Gould and to Karen, Robyn and Jenny in the office. It certainly was a successful event, well done Mullaloo!
