Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club Newsletter JUNE 9, 2016 VIRTUAL OFFICE Due to the exciting refurb of the first floor, the office is now contactable ONLY by email and phone: (08) 9307 6677 [email protected] Well the day has finally arrived! The refurbishment of the Club starts next week when we close the 1st floor to prepare for the works. It has been a long road and a huge effort from our Building committee to get there. There is still a lot of work to go and planning for the fitout has started so that we can be ready to open later this year. Personally, I have many memories of the Club as it is today, from all the celebrations, parties, functions, meetings, wakes and more than 12 New Year’s Eve functions. It has been a great past season for the Club and we celebrated those achievements a couple of weeks ago at our awards night. It was a great night and I was very proud of all of the achievements over the past year. Congratulations to all those who received an award and thank you to all those who supported the Club throughout the season. Also at our awards night was the conferring of life membership to three worthy candidates. After a review by the Honours and Awards Committee, Valerie Ikin (nee: Worthington), Martin Kane and Mark Cleary were awarded Life Membership for their outstanding and distinguished service to the Club. Congratulations to these three deserving members on all the support you have given us over many long years. Our efforts have also been recognised at the State level with 10 individual and 2 Club finalists for the Awards of Excellence. This recognises the effort put in at a Club and State level and our nominees will be judged against nominations from all WA clubs. The Club is a finalist for Patrol Club of the Year and the Lavan Legal Club of the Year and recognises what fantastic outcomes this Club and its members achieve. Whilst the office may be re-locating during the refurbishment, the Club itself is not closing over the winter period. With the IRB racing, Pool Rescue and Stand-up surfing competitions being run over the next few months, things will still be very busy. Recently, a round of the IRB racing was held at Mullaloo North Point, and we had some fantastic racing with excellent results for the Club. If you get a chance to attend the racing and support our Club, you will see some exciting racing from our youth members. Our Education team has also been busy with a Senior First Aid course already being completed. They are busy planning the coming season of training activities and have the challenge of not having facilities whilst the 1st Floor is being refurbished. The good news is that, once we re- open, we will have 3 training areas to meet the club and community needs! The Board and Management team are also busy planning for the coming season. A calendar will be published in the coming months and we expect a small but limited disruption to normal activities during the early part of the season. However, we don’t expect any interruption to the beach and lifesaving activities for the coming season, so we will hopefully see normal operations from October. See you on soon the beach. Well the day has finally arrived! The refurbishment of the Club starts next week when we close the 1st floor to prepare for the works. It has been a long road and a huge effort from our Building committee to get there. There is still a lot of work to go and planning for the fitout has started so that we can be ready to open later this year. CLUB LOUNGE CLOSES...

The Club Lounge has finally closed and, wow, what a send-off we gave it! It was a big night with mostly standing room for the many members and their guests, all there to reminisce about past great times we have had in our Lounge.

It was great to see so many of our current and former members down at the Club and there was a great atmosphere with live music playing in the background.

With the Chase the Ace jackpot at $2,500 that was guaranteed to be won on the night, and also a number of meat packs to give away, there was plenty of interest from all of the attendees. After 12 draws, it came down to Janine Cronk to pick the lucky Ace of Spades, and win the jackpot.

Also on the night, there was a special announcement by the Board and the Management team. To recognise the great work and support over many years from our very special life member, Peg Davidson, we announced that the new Club bar would be named after her. It was a very special surprise for Peg and she appreciated the special honour bestowed upon her. The support for this announcement from the members and guests was clear when they burst into rapturous applause!

So the Club lounge will be closed whilst the first floor refurbishment is underway and is expected to re-open by the beginning of December.

SURF SPORTS WRAP

IRB Racing Series Round 1–3, @ Quinns, Leighton, MulllalooWOW! Did Mullaz turn it on or what for the IRB Racing event! Granted, we had to move down to Mullaloo North Point for Round 3 of the 2016/17 season, because of seaweed …and seaweed… and more seaweed – but it was worth it! The conditions were terrific, a nice swell breaking on a sand bank offshore, a light easterly wind and sunshine. Does it get any better? Have a look at some of the action pictures and see what you think.

OK, we started late. Moving lots of IRB’s, trailers, tents, officials, competitors, sundry equipment and supporters all takes time. But that’s Surf. It’s one of many things I have gained from SLS: sometimes you have to go with the flow.

To all the team that enabled this event to happen, the Mullaloo

Events team, Officials, First Aid, Emergency Services Officer, Water Crews, Competitors and the other clubs who competed on the day: Thank You. Some would say it would have been easier to quit. But that’s not Surf Lifesaving.

Unfortunately, the first carnival at Quinns was cancelled due to bad weather, not good news as it is a short season to start with. The second carnival was at Leighton (Fremantle) and the Mullaloo team set a standard that made some of the other teams take note. Fremantle, one of the strongest teams in recent years glanced our way more than once on the day. In fact, a few times they had to look forward as we were in front of them. Freo still won the carnival by a slim margin from Mullaloo, 61 to 57, with the third club at just 7 points. Congratulations to Freo, but in reviewing the results, when you have up to 6 teams in both male and female in some events, you have to end up with a few points!

Now for the IRB racing at Mullaz. There were some great waves coming through. Ask the surfers who walked from the car park to the point and were asking themselves – what’s going on here?? I paraphrase, it may have been a bit stronger.

On the weekend, the team maintained the standard we had set in the 2nd carnival, 14 teams in the 8 finals that were run, with 8 teams in the top 3. However, once again we have been pipped by Fremantle, 58 points to 52, with Trigg third at 20. Our inspiration has been reinforced.

With the waves and swell, the conditions were challenging. However, Surf is all about managing risk and the officials were vigilant, monitoring and reassessing throughout the carnival. Yes, there were a few IRB roll overs and one or two injuries, but I know the vast majority of the competitors were inspired

by the conditions and wanted to test their skills and training. Have a look at our Female Teams, they are unbelievable in the way they have continued to challenge themselves and

overcome. Just ask Ros Wren, with the decision she had to make whether to drive over the huge white water wall on the way to the beach or not. Maybe Robbie shouting encouragement swayed her a little, but as an IRB Driver, it is her call and it paid off.

One of the pictures of the day shows the team of Josh

Bull and Robbie Payne, “punching” through the wave – and I mean punching through. Timing is everything, if they had slowed down and waited or turned around, a totally different outcome. In watching this unfold, I knew the timing was perfect and they had a good chance to get through, whereas I have seen other races and similar attempts and the crowd goes oohh as the carnage unfolds. But still, to see them pop out the other side allowed my heart to resume a normal rate.

To the unsung heroes and heroines of this sport, the Patients, you are amazing. The drivers and the crews get the glory. You get to be dropped in the water to have to wait for an IRB to come out and get you. But they do it at speed, you get to “Play Chicken” and stare down an IRB coming straight at you, hold your hands above your head, get dragged into an IRB, thrown to the deck as it turns an acute angle and then crouch as they get to shore as quickly as possible. You amaze me, as you get out of the IRB smiling. Why I ask? Actually, I shouldn’t, as I want you to stay.

The team is grateful of the support of the Club and members and look forward to a successful remainder of the season and the State and Intestate competition.

Thanks Laurie de Mamiel for this IRB racing wrap up.

SURF SPORTS WRAP - CONTINUED

IRB Racing Series Round 4, Sunday @ SorrentoA chilly, windy morning made for perfect racing conditions at Sorrento on the long weekend. Trialling the 9 can string line to speed up the race turnover certainly had an impact with the event finishing the earliest yet!

Our IRB Racing squad finished on TOP of the point score tally with 20 teams across the 8 finals and yes, that meant borrowing equipment to actually contest them. The Mullaloo male teams placed first in all 4 male finals and 3 of those had four Mullaloo teams in them! Our female teams were also on fire and having multiple teams in the finals is testament that the whole squad have their eye on the upcoming States and National competition.

Albany Craft Challenge 13km, Sunday 5 JuneMullaloo had two surf boat crews enter the 13km challenge in Albany over the long weekend. With a chill in the air, some padded up bootie and blister prepped hands, the race was on! Marlins (Stuart Clarke, Sandy Clarke, Rachel Greene, Rachel Kremer and ring-in Alli Gould from North Cottesloe) came in second with the Mantas (John Gilbody, Dara Mills, Rebecca Singleton, Jude Harlow and Chantal Mansell) a few boats behind. It was, as always, a great race and the after party definitely not one to miss!!!

Pool Rescue Round 1, 28/5/16 @ HBF StadiumMullaloo did well coming 3rd overall at our first hit out of the season in pool rescue. With a small group of competitors and only just making some teams up, let’s hope we can rally up more competitors in the coming rounds!

Don’t forget the pool rescue training on Saturday afternoons at Craigie Leisure Centre 4.30pm. There’s a couple of weeks before Round 2 on Sunday 19 June to get your skills up!

Why not check out this video https://www.youtu.be.com/RApdkFFuRYM to see some of the action!
