Nesengani, Tintswalo Victoria (DCur) Victoria started her nursing career at the Gazankulu Nursing College. She completed her BCur degree at North-West University and her BHons and Master of Arts degrees in Health Sciences at Unisa. Victoria is married to Victor and the proud mother of two sons, Jabulani and Takalani. The family shares a love of travelling and soccer. Victoria is currently the Training Officer in the Health Department, City of Ekurhuleni. Caring for patients is the core aspect of nursing and a cornerstone of all nursing duties. Although caring is seen as a critical component of nursing delivery and an essential characteristic of nursing, there seems to be a gap between theory and practice. Two themes were revealed. The first theme was the experienced empowering aspects of caring while the second theme was the experienced disempowering aspects of caring. A conceptual framework was derived from the results and strategies were derived from the conceptual framework. Strategy one focused on strengthening the working relationship between the Primary Healthcare (PHC) nurse manager and PHC professional nurses. Strategy two focused on facilitating PHC professional nurses to provide effective caring for patients in the PHC clinics, and Strategy three focused on the assessment of the achievement of effective caring for patients by PHC professional nurses. Evaluation of the strategies took place in Phase four. Supervisor: Prof C Downing Co-supervisor: Prof M Poggenpoel Co-supervisor: Prof COA Stein

Mokoena, Andile Glodin (DNSc) Andile Glodin Mokoena holds a BCur degree from the University of Limpopo, Medunsa Campus and a Master’s degree in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the University of Johannesburg. She also holds postgraduate diplomas in Nursing Education and Nursing Management from North-West University. She is a lecturer at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. She is married to Phillip de Beer and they are blessed with two children, a daughter and a son. Part of this study has recently been published in an accredited journal. Couples in a relationship where one is living with borderline personality disorder (BPD), daily experience challenges in the relationship. These include emotional upheaval, social role changes, interpersonal distance and change in the relationship itself. The study aimed to develop, implement and evaluate a model for psychiatric nurses to facilitate the mental health of these couples. The central concept “facilitation of constructive intra- and interpersonal relationship” for the couples was identified. This informed the development of the model. Implementation of the model was done by psychiatric nurses with the couples. The evaluation of the model revealed that it was successful. The model was experienced as a helpful tool to empower the couples and offered an opportunity for the psychiatric nurses to grow professionally. The original contribution of this thesis was the development, implementation and evaluation of the model. Supervisor: Prof MA Temane Co-supervisor: Prof M Poggenpoel Co-supervisor: Prof CPH Myburgh Co-supervisor: Dr N Ntshingila

Nsibandze, Bonisile Sphiwe (DNSc) Bonisile obtained her Diploma in Nursing (2004) and Bachelor of Nursing Science degree (2006) from the University of Swaziland. She completed her master’s studies at the University of Botswana, specialising as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Bonisile holds the position as a lecturer at the University of Eswatini. Her long-term goals are to uphold the philosophy of being a sound educator in Primary Health Care, a seasoned scientific researcher who has been enabled to develop new knowledge to support and advance nursing practice in the Kingdom of Eswatini. She is the appointed International Ambassador for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners since 2019. The HIV pandemic has immense effects on the Eswatini population. Though it is a national disaster, the burden of HIV care rests on women, typically grandmothers. This study draws from phenomenological fieldwork involving six case studies of grandmother-granddaughter pairs. The following four themes were identified from the data: (1) experienced quest to survive; (2) experienced support system; (3) experienced psychological effects; and (4) experienced extended duty of the caregiving role by grandmothers. The original contribution of the study involves the development of a conceptual framework for the facilitation of self-management of HIV by female adolescents living with HIV, based on the findings of the field study. Phase three of the study focused on developing and describing the strategies for the facilitation of self-management of HIV by female adolescents living with HIV and their grandmothers who care for them. Supervisor: Prof C Downing Co-supervisor: Prof M Poggenpoel Co-supervisor: Prof CPH Myburgh

Chetty, Elizabeth (DPhil) Elizabeth Chetty matriculated (with distinction) at Marburg Secondary School, Port Shepstone. In 2007, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Optometry (cum laude) from UJ and joined the Department of Optometry as a Contact Lens Research Assistant before becoming a full-time lecturer (UJ) in 2010. She was awarded (in 2008) a UJ New Generation Scholarship Bursary. In 2012 she achieved her MPhil (cum laude) and an Award of Distinction for the Best Overall Postgraduate and also the Vice-Chancellor’s Award (for the most meritorious Master’s study) in the Faculty of Health Sciences, UJ. Elizabeth has published eight papers in accredited journals. Keratoconus is a progressive ocular disease resulting in an irregular cone-shaped cornea with moderately or severely impaired vision, requiring specialty contact lenses or corneal surgery. Keratoconus affects the anterior eye, which directly affects corneal shape, power and the refractive state of the eye. Variation of these quantities is difficult to understand and conventional univariate statistical analytical methods for these essential ocular parameters are unsatisfactory. Thus, it becomes necessary to analyse variation in corneal power and refractive state of eyes with and without keratoconus using multivariate statistical methods to gain more complete knowledge of the disease and its effects on the cornea of the eye. The multivariate methods used here to analyse short-term variation of central corneal power and refractive state in individuals with and without keratoconus are unique and may lead to earlier diagnosis and advances in treatment, which could lead to improved quality of life for individuals with keratoconus. Chipeya, Nyamutowa Lucky Rachel (DTech) Lucky Chipeya is a senior lecturer and the programme coordinator of the Bachelor of Nuclear Medicine Technology in the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. She holds the following qualifications since she entered the field of radiography in 1979, NDip Diagnostics and Nuclear Medicine (Hillbrow Hospital), B Admin, BAdmin Honours in Industrial Psychology (Unisa), NHD Nuclear Medicine (TWR) and MPhil Higher Education (University of Stellenbosch). Her study was inspired by her advocacy for nuclear medicine radiographers to practise the clinical skills acquired during training. Nuclear medicine radiographers are involved in myocardial perfusion imaging, a multi-step imaging procedure with complex reconstruction processes of image quality. Subsequently, nuclear medicine physicians are also involved in the processes of the image quality before the interpretation of final sets of images. Due to the overlap in the involvement of the two professionals on the quality of images, inconsistences exist between different Nuclear Medicine Departments. A parallel mixed method design, a conciliatory and pragmatic approach was adopted. Themes that emerged were, management of myocardial perfusion image quality, challenges in processing and assessment of image quality and inter-professional relationships. Statistical results revealed that nuclear medicine physicians concurred more among themselves than with nuclear medicine radiographers. The integrated results, thinking map and a conceptual framework enabled the development of strategies to facilitate nuclear medicine radiographers’ practices in myocardial perfusion image quality, and this is the original contribution of this study to radiography: nuclear medicine. Supervisor: Dr MS Jansen Van Rensburg Co-supervisor: Prof WMD Vangu

Crous, Anna Magdalena (DTech) Anine Crous was born in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa in 1989. She matriculated from Monument High School in 2007. Anine obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Technology in 2011 from the University of Johannesburg, and joined the Laser Research Centre (LRC) to complete her Master’s degree in Biomedical Technology, which she obtained cum laude in 2016. Anine then pursued her PhD at the LRC receiving scholarships from the National Research Foundation, Cancer Association of South Africa and South African Research Chairs Initiative. The candidate’s doctoral research project titled: “Lung Cancer and Lung Cancer Stem Cell Responses to Immuno and Nanoparticle Mediated Drug Delivery for Photodynamic Therapy”, allowed her to enhance the effectivity and selectivity of Photodynamic therapy (PDT), a non-invasive form of cancer treatment. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an important role in resisting conventional cancer therapies and activate relapse. Her study focussed on the eradication of lung cancer by using a photosensitiser conjugated to gold nanoparticles and an antibody directed towards lung CSCs. The nanoconjugate was only activated upon laser light stimulation. Her research identified that lung CSCs can be isolated and identified using stem cell markers and that gold nanoparticles increased the uptake and retention of the photochemical drug. Using the nanoconjugate on lung cancer cells led to the complete eradication of lung CSCs in vitro. Her research was disseminated internationally by conference presentations and several publications. Naidoo, Kathleen (DTech) Kathleen Naidoo completed her National Diploma in Radiography (diagnostic), cum laude, in 2006. Subsequently, she has also obtained her BTech and MHSc in Radiography from the Durban University of Technology in 2009 and 2016 respectively. She was a former lecturer at both the Durban University of Technology and the University of Johannesburg. She is now currently a lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She presented her doctoral research at both international and national conferences. Her doctoral research has resulted in two published journal articles in peer-reviewed, accredited journals. Caring for patients within a radiology environment is critical and this requires student radiographers to be equipped with the skills necessary for their daily interactions with patients. This doctoral research study focussed on understanding the concept of caring from the perspective of first-year diagnostic radiography students, in order to provide them with the support needed to cope in this environment. This study aimed at generating a new theory in the form of a model, using an exploratory, qualitative research design. The developed model provides a framework of reference for diagnostic radiography educators and students to begin a learning journey together that will enable the development of a culture of caring amongst diagnostic radiography students. A social constructivist teaching philosophy underpins the implementation of the model process. This research is an original contribution to radiography education, as there is currently no model available within a South African context to teach caring. Ntema, Vusi Mcmillan (DTech) Vusi Ntema is a UJ alumnus who started his research career completing an MTech at the Water and Health Research Centre before embarking on his doctorate. His doctorate project was funded by a R600 000.00 Water Research Commission (WRC) grant that Vusi successfully secured. During his time at UJ Vusi was a part-time lecturer for various Microbiology courses and successfully co-supervised three MTech students. Vusi is currently employed as the section head for the Microbiology and Hydrobiology laboratories at Umgeni Water and serves as a WRC steering committee member and as reviewer for a variety of national funders and conferences. The candidate’s doctoral research investigated the occurrence and association of toxigenic and non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae association with zooplankton, phytoplankton, animal faeces, amoeba, sediments and water in and around Msunduzi River in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The Msunduzi River is used for drinking water as well as religious and recreational activities and was shown to be contaminated with faecal pollution. Although no toxigenic V. cholerae was isolated or detected using conventional microbiology and molecular biology methods, non-toxigenic V. cholerae was isolated from 56% of samples collected at all sites for all sample types, except for amoeba and animal faeces. The study showed that temperature, pH, salinity, turbidity, conductivity, total coliform and Escherichia coli counts were statistically significant predictors of the occurrence of V. cholerae. Detection of total coliform, E. coli and non-toxigenic V. cholerae from the Msunduzi river indicate a health risk to the people who use the water.
