WELCOME TO THE 2021 WINTER EDITION

Preparing for Winter

It’s that time of year again! Days are getting shorter, and the nights are getting colder. As the

use of electric blankets and heaters increases over the coming months, now is a great time to

start to think about fire safety in your home.

Free Fire Alarm Check

Fire and Rescue NSW provide a free home visit to check your smoke alarm and ensure it is

working properly. They can also replace batteries in existing fire alarms and will install a long

life battery fire alarm if you don’t currently have one. This is a free service. Contact Willoughby

Fire Station on 9958 4016 to find out more.

Heaters and Electric Blankets

Electric blankets and heaters can both pose a

fire risk. If you use an electric blanket, it

should only be turned on to warm the bed and

turned off once you are in bed. Check the

blanket and wires for any obvious signs of

damage before use, although it is best to have

an electrician check it over. Faulty blankets

can overheat and potentially cause an electric

shock or fire. Blankets should be stored rolled

up rather than folded to reduce the risk of

damaging the wiring.

Heaters should also be checked for damage

such as rust or frayed wires. An electricitan

should carry out any required repairs.

Remember, stay a metre from the heater, and

don’t place drying clothes on or next to the

heater.

Slips, trips and falls

The risk of slips, trips and falls can also

increase during winter. When using

heaters and electric blankets, ensure that

the cords do not pose a trip hazard.

As leaves fall from trees, pathways can

become extra slippy – take care as you

move around!

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is very important, and can be harder to come

by during the winter months. Vitamin D can help increase

resistance to infection, boost mental health, assist in

maintaining bone strength and helps the body to absorb

calcium.

Foods that are high in vitamin D include:

Oily fish (eg salmon, sardines, herring, tuna and

mackerel)

Egg yokes

Red meat

Liver and cod liver oil

Orange juice

We can aso get a vitamin D boost by spending just a few

minutes outdoors in the sun each day. Even during winter

it is best to avoid the midday sun and wear sunscreen if

you are out and about during the hottest part of the day.

Meals on Wheels

We offer a range of hot, frozen or chilled main meals, desserts and sandwiches all delivered to

your door by our team of friendly volunteers.

excellent value for money. Main meals are $7.25.
