The term professionalism is well used but what does it mean to you? The NMC suggest that: ‘Professionalism means something to everyone who works as a nurse or midwife. Being an inspiring role

model working in the best interests of people in your care, regardless of what position you hold and where you deliver care, is what really brings practice and behaviour together in harmony. Good health

and care outcomes are highly dependent on the professional practice and behaviours of nurses and midwives.’

When working with students promoting a learning culture for others is vital. Being a role model can include :

Demonstrating clearly what professionalism looks like in practice Demonstrating positive behaviours and attitudes towards diversity

Supporting colleagues and students Celebrating personal success and that of others

Providing meaningful and constructive feedback to others Sharing and disseminating evidence-informed practice

Keep up the good work – your students need you!

Medicines management for students! A reminder for all mentors!

All students must be supervised and questioned when practicing all aspects of the administration of medication. This includes the 9 rights of medicine administration. The whole process should be supervised by checking the patient’s prescription chart and also:

1. Is it the correct patient

2. Correct drug

3. Correct dose

4. The correct date and time of administration

5. The correct route and method of administration

6. Diluent as appropriate

7. The validity of the prescription

8. Signature of prescriber

9. The prescription is legible

Documentation should then clearly state who administered the medication and who witnessed the process. Student nurses must have their own JAC login which will allow their mentor/supervisor to counter sign the process. Sign-post your students to the Marsden Manual for more information.

Nikki Wright, Interim Chief Pharmacist for the Trust, confirms that the new JAC system which came into use on the 1st November 2018 will make this process even easier. It is very clear how to record on the system who the witness was. In fact any member of staff is undergoing supervised practice, can have their administration counter signed in the same way. If anyone experiences any difficulty with this process please contact the [email protected].

Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices Welcome to our first Cohort of Registered Nurse Degree

Apprentices. They began their studies in the Trust in September 2018 and

2018 and will qualify in 2020. We are fortunate to have both

Adult and Mental health students in our first group.

These students will be members of your teams. They will spend two days a week as supernumerary student nurses, one day studying and two days as health care support workers. The Open University have produced very clear and useful guidelines on how to support our OU apprentices with their new programme. The clinical education team will also be supporting you, these students and our other students, whilst they are on placement. For more information on mentorship of these students and their programme please click here.

Please get in touch with the clinical education team if you have any questions!
