The Curriculum…

As a school, we follow the White Rose maths scheme, which is embedded in maths mastery. The children have teacher led lessons each week plus maths activities are interwoven throughout the continuous provision.

The children will participate in daily RWI phonics lessons with children of the same ability. Progress is assessed every half term.

The children have teacher led Literacy lessons each week linked to the topic that is being covered. Work is generally recorded in a Literacy book. Literacy activities will also be planned for within the continuous provision.

Topic led learning…

Secure Reception outdoor play area (with partial undercover sections for wet weather). Access to the Secret Garden (Orchard area) Access to the KS1 Playground. Access to the whole school field. Access to KS1 and KS2 sports hall for P.E. and assemblies. Access to the wildlife areas, including a secure pond.

We use the outdoor areas for our learning as much as possible and visit the Secret Garden weekly for lessons. It is therefore essential that the children have named wellies and a coat in school, as we venture outdoors whatever the weather!

Assessments…

The children are assessed half-termly by a specialist to measure progress and to determine which group they should be working in.

• Each child has their own electronic Learning Journey, recording all of their academic achievements.

• EYFS staff observe and assess the children throughout the school day in a range of teacher led, child led and child initiated activities.

• Observations are recorded and uploaded onto Tapestry; an online interactive learning diary.

• Judgements are made according to Developmental Matters, highlighting the curriculum area, the age band the child is working within and given a level (emerging, expected, secure).

• Parents and carers can access their child’s learning journey as well as upload material themselves, if the online Tapestry form has been submitted. This can be found on the EYFS Induction page of the website.

Running alongside our current curriculum, we also have a ‘toolkit for life’ which aims to teach the children a range of

skills and expose them to experiences that they may not have. Some schools refer to this as a hidden curriculum.

The Rushmere Toolkit

We celebrate our 10 key values…

Every week a child will be picked to have a visit

from their class toy which will come home with

them on a Friday and stay for the weekend,

returning to Reception on Monday.

They can write about all the exciting things you

have got up to in the book provided and may

even choose to add pictures or drawings. This

will be shared with the class during circle time.

Due to the nature of the EYFS curriculum, the children have constant access to the inside and outside learning environment. There are no formal morning or afternoon breaks during the first two terms, instead there are opportunities for ‘quiet’ time during the school day such as morning snack time. As part of the transition to KS1, this will change in the Summer Term and the children will have playtime on the KS1 playground with children from years 1 and 2.

Playtime arrangements...

After lunch the children are taken onto the KS1 playground for a lunchtime play. The children are supervised by designated lunchtime staff and the play area is separate from the older children in KS2. We operate a peer mentor system where some of our older children have been trained to organise games and activities. Our MDSA’s are also trained in lunchtime play and provide games and activities such as a lunch time ‘arts and crafts’ sessions. If the weather stops the children playing outside, then they are supervised in the North Hall.

Reception entrance and exit areas…

When you arrive at our school Reception you will notice that it has its own dedicated entrance and exit. This is where you will say goodbye to your children in the mornings and collect them at the end of the day. There is space for all pupils to have their own pegs with space for wellies and bags too. The entrance area also has a toilet, if your child needs to use the toilet before coming into school. Notices for parents are stored on the display board and communication book is available to allow parents

to pass messages to the staff without needing things to be discussed in front of the children.

School uniform…

Currently, Hudsons (our uniform provider) are NOT DELIVERING to the school for orders being made online. Home deliveries have an additional £5 charge. Orders where delivery is required to the school will be ready for parents to collect on Wednesday 2nd September and the school will arrange a series of collection times. School starts (if things are back to normal) on the Thursday 3rd September and if bits of uniform are still missing please do not worry. By the beginning of the first full week w.c. Monday 7th September, the expectation is that full uniform will be worn from this point forward.

The last day to order for school collection from Hudsons will be Friday 14th August for school pick up and 19th August for home delivery.

Your child will also need a book bag which can be purchased from the school office. When in school, this will be stored in their tray and it is where they will keep items such as a library book and their personal RWI resources.
