SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD AT HOME IN LANGUAGES
• Encourage vocabulary revision little and often. Electronic resources like
www.pearsonactivelearn.com are good, but you can also…
• Stick up vocabulary around bedroom/house – the more they see it, the more it will stick
• Traffic Lights
• Word trees
• Encourage resilience with homework – learning a language won’t always be easy, and they
won’t always understand first time.
• Get them to apply the 3Cs – Cognition (Knowledge) / Cognates / Context
• Get them to refer back in their book – how does the homework refer back to the lesson they have
just/recently done?
• Get them to look at their Vocabulary sheet – available on FROG, your teacher will print if
requested.
• Get them to think what the answer might be – what is the homework/text about?
• Encourage students to engage with the culture of the country they are learning
about: music, film etc.,
• Show an interest yourself in what they are learning – if you don’t speak the
language yourself, get them to teach you!
• Please do not let them use Google Translate or other similar translation engines.
School recommended dictionaries online are:
