The Autumn network learning event took place on the 11th October at the Best Western Firgrove Hotel in Warrington. The guest speaker was Kerry Leigh from Laughology who did an outstanding job of facilitating a really interactive and fun learning event.

The theme was Motivation in Mentoring and Creating Happy Teams, and Kerry started the group off with a brief introduction to Laughology and how it came into being. Kerry then set some group work for the delegates, posing questions about what is laughter and humour, leading into how laughter and humour work on a physiological and psychological level. Delegates shared their own stories in small groups about which situations or words that made them feel good and from there moved into topics around motivation in relation to themselves and their teams.

Kerry talked about laughter “triggers”;

how to recognise them and how to use them to help in different situations, such as in mentoring sessions; with work colleagues and also at home with friends and family.

There was a great exercise about breaking patterns which got delegates up out of their chairs and learning about how breaking behavioural patterns is entirely possible, but that it can feel a bit awkward at first. Working in pairs, delegates said the numbers 1-2-3 alternating from one to the other, the next step being to change one of the numbers to a different word and continuing on like this until they were still “counting” to 3 but using alternatives to the numbers. You had to be there…

One of the main points of the afternoon was to highlight that humour and laughter break negative thought patterns, so when we think about a situation in a positive light we make better decisions,

which impacts on our behaviour. Kerry used the acronym FLIP to highlight this: F for focus, L for language, I for imagination and P for pattern breaking.

The afternoon came to a close too quickly and delegates were introduced to a new tool from the Scheme: The Reflective Practice Log. This is for each person to keep a record of the events they attended and to reflect for their own records how they have applied learning back in their job role and in their professional relationships and organisations.

Thank you once again to Kerry for providing a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, thank you to the delegates for participating and to the venue for their excellent facilities.We do look forward to working with the Laughology team in the future, and would like to thank all the delegates for their participation in making this another great scheme event!
