Welcome to Saul Waterways

Pageantby Les EtheridgeIWA National Chairman

On behalf of The Inland WaterwaysAssociation (IWA) I would like to welcomeyou to Saul Waterways Pageant at SaulJunction. The event is a traditional boat rallyand so rather different from events run atSaul in the past.

Our friends in Cotswold Canals Trust are busyrestoring the Stroudwater Navigation and theThames & Severn Canal, which link SaulJunction to Inglesham, near Lechlade, on theRiver Thames. The canals provide a directlink between two of the country's premierrivers. IWA has strongly supportedwaterways restoration since our founding in1946. Through our Waterway Recovery Groupwe are running eight Canal Camps on theCotswold Canals this year. We all look forwardto the day when the Cotswold Canals onceagain provide a through route for navigation, and we hope this event will highlight theTrust’s ambitious and important work.

Whilst boats are an important part of thewaterway scene, there are many other waysto enjoy the nation’s rivers and canals.Walking, fishing and even just sitting by themand watching the world go by are amongst

their many pleasures. The relaxed pace helpsbring a different perspective to life. IWAbelieves strongly in Waterways for All andwants to see all users enjoy them to the full.

IWA has fought to protect the interests of ourcanals and rivers since 1946. There has beenmuch to do so that the public can enjoy thenetwork available to us all today and IWAhas worked tirelessly and effectively toensure the future viability of the waterways. We will continue to do so and welcome yoursupport to achieve our objectives.

Please visit the IWA marquee to learn moreabout what we do, what we have alreadyachieved and what we hope to do in thefuture. If you like what you see we would bevery pleased to welcome you as a member.

I hope you enjoy the event and that we areblessed with excellent weather!

IWA Support forWaterway Restoration

Waterways are an incredibly valuable assetthat provide enjoyment, recreation andemployment.

Hundreds of miles of the UK’s canals andriver navigations have been saved fromdereliction since The Inland WaterwaysAssociation (IWA) was founded in 1946.Many more miles are gradually being broughtback to life thanks to hundreds of trusts andsocieties and dedicated volunteers, supported by IWA.

IWA assists and advises organisationsinvolved in restoration activities and lobbiesfunding bodies and governmentorganisations to ensure that they understandthe merits and benefits of waterwayrestoration.

IWA's Restoration Committee has theservices of a small Advisory Panel of experts, who can assist with detailed technicalmatters. IWA also provides practical supportfor restoration through its WaterwayRecovery Group which organises restorationworking holidays and weekends.

Financial support is available for restorationgroups in the form of IWA Grants. Somerecent recipients of grants include Wilts &Berks Canal Trust, Neath & Tennant CanalTrust, Somerset Waterways DevelopmentTrust, Chesterfield Canal Trust, LancasterCanal Trust and Pontypridd CanalsConservation Group.

IWA has been developing the huge range ofresources it had available on its website tosupport restoration groups, and enable themto properly plan their projects to ensurefuture sustainability.

10 Reasons to Go Ona WRG Canal Camp

A Canal Camp is an enjoyable week-long

outdoor volunteer holiday spent

working on the canals with IWA's

Waterway Recovery Group (WRG). Find

out why taking part in a Canal Camp is

such a great experience!

1. Eat four custard creams before 11am

and think nothing of it! Each Canal Campcosts £56 which includes all your food andaccommodation for the week. You’ll burn offall those calories in WRG's exclusive ‘outdoorgym’ which could involve bricklaying, clearing vegetation, driving dumpers orcreating towpaths!

2. Meet new people There’s nothing like aweek of working, playing and living togetherto bring a group together! You’ll arriveknowing no-one and come away with 17 newfriends. Our camps are open to anyone aged18-70.

3. Help bring derelict canals back to life

for everyone to enjoy By World War II,freight carrying on all but a few waterwayswas ending and many waterways wereabandoned or filled in. Many waterways havebeen saved and restored but there are stillover 2500 miles of derelict waterways andthat's where we need your help.

4. Drive a digger Many people still callwhat we do ‘canal digging’, but nowadayswhen we need to dig out the channel, werarely do it by hand with picks and shovels -we use excavators and dumper-trucksinstead. We have our own training and DriverAuthorisation scheme and there’s no reasonwhy a new volunteer shouldn’t learn to usemachinery on their first camp!

5. Explore hidden gems of the British

countryside WRG Canal Camps are held allover England and Wales – from the beautifulsetting of the Lancaster Canal to theindustrial heartlands of Derbyshire on theChesterfield and Cromford Canals.

9. Complete your Gold Duke of

Edinburgh’s Award Residential WRG isan Approved Activity Provider through theDuke of Edinburgh's Award scheme andwelcomes participants completing theresidential aspect of it.

IWA’s Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) hasworked alongside the Cotswold Canals Trustfor a number of years and been involved withvarious projects on the canal. This summer,WRG has organised eight Canal Camps on theCotswold Canals at Stroud and Lechlade. Thefinal camp in Stroud begins over the sameweekend as Saul Waterways Pageant, so ifyou're in the area why not visit one of thesites!

The work near Stroud continues therestoration of two locks, Ham Mill andBowbridge Lock. This follows on from workthat took place during the 2013 WRG BonfireBash and past camps. Volunteers willundertake a wide variety of activities, includingremoval of damaged brickwork and bricklayingto reconstruct the lock chamber wall.

This year, WRG has also continued work onInglesham Lock at Lechlade. A lot of planningtook place to ensure the three Camps wentahead to repair the wing walls and clearvegetation from around the lock. IngleshamLock, which was the focus of an IWAfundraising appeal launched in 2010, is at theeastern end of the Cotswold Canals, where thecanal meets the River Thames.

WRG’s Easter Camp 2014

From the 12th-21st April 2014, over 25 WRGvolunteers spent nine days working on twodifferent sites on the Cotswold Canals. Oneteam of volunteers worked on the WeymoorBridge Project. Weymoor Bridge once carried abridleway over the Thames and Severn Canalbut the bridge arch was demolished in the1950s.

WRG volunteers made significant progressover the camp, installing the steel arch thatwill be used to support the brick arch duringthe construction phase. Another team ofvolunteers spent the camp clearing outBowbridge Lock ready for restoration work to

Over 100 volunteers clearedvegetation from Gough’s Orchard Lock,Bowbridge and in the process uncovered theBrimscombe Arch. Over in Ham Mill the workconsisted of clearing the lock chamber andinstalling coping stones.

Other past projects have involved therestoration of Gough’s Orchard Lock, work onGriffin’s Mill Lock near Stroud, Inglesham Lockrestoration work and vegetation clearance.

A Nearby Restoration Hereford & Gloucestershire Canal

The Herefordshire &Gloucestershire Canal Trustproposes full restoration ofthe canal that originally ranfrom the River Severn inGloucester to Hereford.Construction of the canalcommenced in Gloucester in1792, was completed toLedbury by 1798, but tookuntil 1845 to extend the full34 miles to Hereford. TheCanal was closed in 1881 toallow the construction of theLedbury to Gloucester railway.

The reconstruction of OverBasin, where the canal entersthe West Channel of the RiverSevern, was achieved in 2000thanks to the co-ordinatednational effort of IWA'sWaterway Recovery Groupand Canal Trust volunteers. The Trust’s volunteers havefitted out and opened TheWharf House which comprisesa visitor centre, shop and tearooms/restaurant.

At Oxenhall the only knownsurviving lock, a listedstructure, was completed andre-opened in 2004. In 2008,the Trust acquired LlanthonyLock and adjacent cottagesand footbridge, securing aroute for re-connection to theSevern.

The Trust has also worked forfive years with Dymock ParishCouncil to develop a projectthat will see a section of canalbuilt whilst meeting the longterm needs of the community.

A Nearby Restoration The Wilts & Berks Canal

The restoration of the Wilts &Berks Canal is possibly themost ambitious of all thecurrent projects because ofthe length of the canal (51miles plus 6 miles ofbranches). It has beenderelict for nearly a century, and has been largely builtover in urban areas such asSwindon, Melksham andAbingdon.

The Wilts & Berks Canal Trusthas formed a series ofbranches along the length ofthe canal and this has enabledthe Trust to gain wide publicsupport with work partiesunderway along most sectionsof the canal. The Trust, IWA,local authorities along the lineand others have formed aconsortium, Wiltshire Swindonand Oxfordshire CanalPartnership, to progresspolitical promotion of therestoration.

In 2006, IWA provided a grantof about £60,000, to celebrate

its diamond jubilee that year, as a major funder for theconstruction of a new length of waterway to connect thecanal to the Thames near Abingdon. The work wascarried out by the Canal Trust, a contractor and IWA'sWaterway Recovery Group volunteers, and was openedduring the week following IWA’s National Festival atBeale Park on the Thames in late August 2006.
