Making MeaningDistrict reading curriculum focused on comprehension
Fits with our reader’s workshop model
Aligns with common core
Research based Students receive explicit whole group instruction and
then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.
We have and will continue to spend our first weeks working intensely on building our reading and writing stamina, learning the behaviors of reader’s workshop and fostering our classroom community.

2nd Grade Homework
The goal of homework in 2nd grade is to build good study habits and teach responsibility
2nd graders should spend 20 min. a night on homework. Reading should be in addition. If your student works for 20 min. and can’t finish, just write me a note telling me why it is not complete- we don’t want homework to become frustrating
Homework is not meant to be challenging, but reinforce skills learned in school
Pick a homework area and set routines
Vacation during school days

What can you do to support your child this year?
READ, READ, READ! Your child benefits from you reading to them and reading on their own at home.
Make writing REAL (write notes to teacher, relatives, make grocery lists, etc.)
Practice and memorize math facts (+ and - to 18).
Problem Solving - Let your child figure out a plan to get unstuck and be INDEPENDENT!
