Summer schools: We offer international Summer Schools in innovative business and sales models (Business Management) and 3D Modeling and Printing (Graphic and Digital Media).

Joint programmes:Artevelde University of Applied Sciences also organises joint programmes in close cooperation with foreign partner institutions. Most of these joint programmes are double-degree programmes, in which students work for two degrees in parallel, one from each of the institutions.

Students of International Business Management can study abroad for a semester at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Steyr, Austria, and obtain an additional bachelor’s degree in Global Sales and Marketing. Alternatively, they can follow an additional full-year study programme at the British Colombia Institute of Technology in Vancouver, Canada, and obtain the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration. In the end, both choices result in a double degree.

Our department of Social Work participates in Social Work in Urban Areas, a semester-long joint programme between Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and University College Copenhagen (Denmark). Every year, the programme is hosted by one of the four institutions. The key concepts of the programme are urbanisation, migration, globalisation and diversity, and the focus is on presenting the city as a new point of departure for contemporary social work.

Our department of Occupational Therapy participates in the FAB programme (Finland-Austria-Belgium), together with FH Campus Vienna and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. Occupational Therapy students and their lecturers follow modules on urban exploration, occupational injustice and social inclusion, health promotion and new and emerging roles in occupational therapy at all three universities. The students also complete an Erasmus clinical placement during their time abroad. This programme is the only bachelors-level international joint programme in occupational therapy in the whole world. Students who complete the programme earn a double degree.

3ID Labs

At Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, exchange students are also welcome in our 3ID Labs. During one semester, an interna-tional group - young and old - will focus on a particular social issue.

The cases are suggested by external organ-isations in themes like sustainability and social inclusion. Via the ‘design thinking’ process, students get started in small teams. They themselves need to take the initiative to obtain the missing knowledge in their team. They can do so by consult-ing literature, but they can also organise workshops for each other. Here, the process is more important than the developed final product or result, which they will present to an external international jury at the end of the road. It is all about acquiring profes-sional competences and 21st century skills, and learning to set your own targets and realising those.

The diversity in the group is a major asset for the success of this programme. Every issue is approached interdisciplinary by a mix of own and incoming students and newcomers in Belgium with a degree they previously acquired abroad.

Studying is challenging, even more so when abroad. In order to help students deal with academic and social bumps along the way, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences offers tailor-made counselling services for everyone.

We offer a range of tools to cope with academic transition issues. Discover 5 of them below:

> Stop cramming supports students with a 5-step plan to improve their study strategy. The website consists of study tips, checklists and exercises.> Studies without Worries is an online self- help programme for whoever is held back by fear of failure, lack of assertiveness or procras- tination. After completing a questionnaire, students receive personalised advice.> A range of checklists are available to support students with their writing, note taking and emailing.

> Spotlight on Assessment offers students tips on the most popular types of assessment. What will an oral exam look like? How do you prepare for a multiple-choice exam? And how do you start a reflection assignment?> The Academic Writing Assistant helps students write academic texts. It offers advice on common language issues, coherence and cohesion, stylistic matters, on specific words and word combinations.

We also provide students with a range of coaching possibilities when more personal coaching is necessary:

> Each degree programme has an army of coaches at the students’ disposal, to support them with study methods, language skills or difficulties adapting.> The special needs coach works with students who experience difficulties due to a disability of any sort when the existing support is insufficient.

> During a writing clinic, students can get individual and personalised feedback on a writing assignment. The feedback looks at the text’s strong and weak points, and how improvements can be made.> The Office of Student Support can help students with legal information and advice.> Our Student Counsellors offer a discrete and attentive ear of support. Students can drop by for one or more conversations.

Internationalisation for Students at Artevelde University of Applied SciencesAt Artevelde University of Applied Sciences we believe that people are capable of self-development. We start from this idea to define the professional identity of both our students and our staff members and stimulate them to think critically, to act professionally and to become the person they can and want to be. Together we create education. The educational concept of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences is our vision on what good education is all about.

Going Abroad

Specifically regarding global citizenship, we devote a lot of attention to internationalisation.

All our students can:> Spend at least one semester at one of our partner institutions abroad in the context of their studies; > Apply for an international internship;> Enrol in joint degree programmes, excellence programmes and summer school courses.

Depending on the destination, we assist students when they apply for a scholarship to financially support their mobility abroad through the Erasmus+ Programme, VLIR-UOS travel grants, Generic Scholarship Programme, Priority Country Programme, or ASEM-DUO Fellowship Programme. And, in Flanders, we are the only higher education institution offering our students the ISEP Exchange Programme.

All this results in an ever-increasing student mobility. Every year, over 700 of our students go abroad to study and/or do an internship, so by the time they graduate, one student in five will have enjoyed an international experience. This puts us at the top concerning student mobility in Flanders, and when considering universities of applied sciences specifical-ly, we are in the lead.

Internationalisation@Home

We already mentioned that one of our objectives is to have 33% mobile students, but at the same time, we also want to achieve 100% mobility of the mind. Students who prefer not to travel abroad, will get a taste of different cultures thanks to one of the following initiatives:

> Due to our international degree and semester programmes, students can choose to follow classes in English, together with international students, and thus creating mixed classrooms;> Increasing virtual initiatives;> All programmes devote attention to global developments in their own field;> Guest lecturers, especially during an international week/ international days organised by each department;> Our lecturers integrate foreign-language texts or teaching materials into their programme;> All local students can apply to become the buddy of an incoming international student.

Depending on the destination, we assist students when they apply for a scholarship to financially support their mobility abroad.

We already mentioned that we have 20% mobile students, but at the same time, we also want to achieve 100% mobility of the mind. Students who prefer not to travel abroad, will get a taste of different cultures thanks to one of the following initiatives:

Internationalisation for Lecturers and Staff MembersAs an innovation-oriented organisation, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences promotes incoming and outgoing staff mobility. We are always working on reducing potential barriers and implementing new frame-works and initiatives that facilitate and disseminate the international activities.

Next to a large offer of further trainings, international study days and congresses where our lecturers and staff members can extend their international network, we also offer the following possibilities:

Lecturer Exchange, Job Shadowing and Benchmarking

International experiences are not only enriching for students. A trip abroad can also be very inspiring for lecturers and other staff members. They can gain lots of inspiration and insights from shadowing colleagues and comparing their way of working or teaching. Thus, staff mobility gives both us and our partner institutions the chance to improve through collaboration and comparison. In addition, it is an excellent way to strengthen the ties between international institutions.

International Staff Weeks

Every year, each department organises an International Week around a specific field of expertise. During this week, we invite lecturers and staff from our various foreign partner institutions for an interactive programme.

It is the ideal opportunity to network, to share ideas, to discover the latest developments in your field of study during workshops for lecturers and students, to benchmark, and to brainstorm about future international projects. And to explore Ghent, of course!

Every two years, we also organise an International Staff Week for administrative staff members from higher education institutions with diverse inspiring workshops for support services.

Teaching, building contacts and making comparisons has added a great deal of creativity to my job. The first time I went on a staff mobility to Gävle, I was job shadowing a Swedish professor for a week. The way he was around students ... I really liked it! It’s something I try to take with me.

Advanced English Course (C1)

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences attaches great importance to good language skills. All our staff members can take free language lessons via the accessible online platform Altissia. Further-more, we offer a blended formula of English, consisting of online and face-to-face classes at different levels.

Lecturers who wish to teach in English must pass the Cambridge Advanced English Exam, the C1 exam of the British Council. In this way, we ensure the best (language) education for our own and international students. Close to 200 of our lecturers have already passed the C1 exam.

I loved meeting colleagues who are positive and enthu-siastic about early childhood education. Seeing that we have a lot of similarities and being able to reflect on differences was really inspiring.

Research and Development CentresArtevelde University of Applied Sciences is a centre for research and development. We dedicate ourselves to practice-oriented research, that contributes to educational innovation, modernisation, and professionali-sation in the work field and social services. All projects are set up in collaboration with external partners such as governments, companies, civil society, national and international consortia or networks.

Another aspect of our social mission is to introduce research and science to the general public. With our many activities in science communication, we reach children, adolescents and adults and introduce them to various domains in science and technology.

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences clusters its expertise in 5 research and development centres (RDCs). They unite experts from related disciplines in practice-oriented research projects and translate societal problems into practical solutions. Valorisation – the implementation of research results – is an essential

strategy for practice-based research.

I-KNOW-HOW, financed by Interreg 2 Seas:

I-KNOW-HOW stands for Integrated KNOWledge & coaching service to support people with cancer in How to remain Or return to Work. The overall objective of the project is to facilitate people who receive a diagnosis of cancer to remain or return to work by co-creating and piloting new services for employers, employees, (para)medical professionals and job coaches. Artevelde Univer-sity of Applied Sciences is taking the lead in this project with partners from France, the Netherlands and the UK.

EuroScitizen, financed by COST, a collaboration between 34 European Countries:

This COST Action will, for the first time, generate and analyse approaches used to improve public scientific literacy. Scientific literacy is a prerequi-site for generating a knowledge-based society and for allowing citizens to make informed decisions. The Action will contribute to a culture of respon-sibility, research and innovation (RRI) and will result in a more scientifically literate European citizen-ship, instrumental to implementing Europe 2020’s smart, sustainable and inclusive goals.

International ResearchKnowledge is universal. Challenges in the work field and in practice are often similar in various countries. That is why we believe in the importance of internationalising research. This means that we strive for international contacts between lecturers, researchers and students, and focus on the mobility of knowledge and data.

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences is currently involved in 26 international research and develop-ment projects. Many of our studies are part of international collaborations, via the Erasmus+ programme, COST, VLIR-UOS, ESF, Horizon 2020 and Interreg, such as:

CONNEXT for inclusion, financed by ESF, in collaboration with the Flemish organisa-tion [ew32], Metropolia University College (Finland) and the municipality of Karlstad (Sweden):

The project will implement co-creative serious games to reduce unqualified outflow of Flemish and Brussels boys and girls with a migrant background. Youngsters are challenged, in an interactive way, to connect with important aspects of their living environ-ment, such as parents, friends, school, hobbies and supporting institutions. Ultimately, the aim is to increase their trust in the school system and increase their faith in their own future.

Berchem Creatives, financed by the ESF, in collaboration with Creative Cities and EOI Business School, Madrid (Spain):

The European Social Fund invests in innova-tive projects that address social challeng-es in the labour market, and that is exactly what Berchem Creatives is. The initiative helps creative starters with diverse backgrounds to set up a business in the Antwerp suburb of Berchem, following the example of similar initiatives in Europe. Within this project, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences is developing a ‘social suburban start-up guide’ to stimulate creative entrepre-neurship and social integration.

When you’re involved as a researcher in international projects, you get the opportunity to gain new insights. For example, you get to meet fellow social work professionals in other European countries who are all working to improve the world in their own way. Supporting each other in this is extremely energising. We strongly believe in international cooperation and are therefore working on three new international projects on refugees, vulnerable families and young school-leavers.

Tim Vanhove

Social Work Research Coordinator

The main goal of my work is to contribute to (more) equal opportunities for language learners-at-risk in education and society. Last year, I visited the Universidad Católica de Valencia to teach a master class on inclusive language education and to realize more equal education opportunities worldwide. I also visited a so-called community school in a Valencian village nearby, where the school is perceived as an educative hub for the Spanish and migrant families living there. These experiences make me tell stories. Stories that cross borders.

Carolien Frijns

Researcher & Lecturer

Some of our researchers have been involved in multiple international research projects. Internationalisation is one the pillars of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences’ research policy. We actively support and strongly invest in international collaboration.

Global CooperationArtevelde University of Applied Sciences demonstrates its social commitment all over the world. We do this by means of a structural cooperation with the Flemish Association for Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance (VVOB) in the following countries. VVOB focuses on improving the quality of education in the global south, through processes of exchanging eperiences, developing education expertise and awareness raising regarding the importance of education for development.

Cambodia

In Cambodia, we focus on the optimisation of education with a special attention to preschool and primary education, specifically around the themes of mathematics and gender equality.

South Africa

Through the VVOB, we cooperate with the South African Council for Educators, which provides an extensive professionalisation offer for local teachers.

Ecuador

In Ecuador, Artevelde Univeristy of Applied Sciences will be organising specific training modules in Spanish, that will focus on developing coaching skills.

CASE: NEPAL

It doesn’t stop there. Artevelde University of Applied Sciences also sets up projects on its own initiative in countries that are struggling. Nepal is an example. For years, the Bachelors of Preschool Education, Primary Education, Secondary Education and Early Childhood Education have had good relationships with Tibetan refugee camps, which our students visited to teach in the context of their internship.

In 2015, when seventeen Artevelde University of Applied Sciences interns were staying in Nepal, fate struck unexpectedly. Two earthquakes cost the lives of almost 8,000 people. Homes were destroyed, cities were in ruins, families were torn apart.

Since then, we are making even greater efforts to support Nepal. We have joined forces with numerous development organisations to help build schools across the country and provide quality education that offers children a future.

After the earthquakes, we were often the first to arrive in remote villages with food, clothes and blankets for those who had lost their homes. The villagers were trying to stay strong, and so were we. But it was very hard to hold back our tears. Especially because everyone was so grateful.

Laure Vanhaelemeersch, intern in Nepal

In addition to the VVOB, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences takes the lead in VLIR-UOS-funded programmes such as South Initiatives, International Training Programmes and the Global Minds programme. VLIR-UOS receives funding from the Belgian Development Cooperation and supports partner-ships between universities and universities of applied sciences, in Flanders and in the global south, looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges.

By leading South Initiative projects with higher education institutions in the global south, we contribute to tackling the challenges of its global partners:

Cambodia

Cooperation with National Institute of Education (NIE) for the sustainable implementation of student-cen-tered approaches in their science curricula.

South Africa

We’re collaborating with Stellenbosch University to develop a tailored protocol for implementing a communi-ty-based rehabilitation centre in the rural area of Kwazulu Natal.

Ecuador

We work together with Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, VVOB Ecuador and Universidad Técnica del Norte to manage the quality in teacher education. Also, we have a cooperation with Universidad Casa Grande, where we focus on training caregivers and teachers in the early childhood education and care (ECEC) centres.

Rwanda

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences joined forces with University of Rwanda to improve the quality of midwifery clinical education.

International NetworkWe are proud of our international network! Thanks to our partner institutions within and outside Europe, we can organise valuable exchanges for students, lecturers and researchers, we enrich and strengthen each other with our knowledge and cultures, and we collaborate to create all kinds of educational and social projects.

Thanks to the many international memberships in specific subject areas and participation in higher education conferences such as EAIE and NAFSA, our lecturers and other staff members can maintain and expand their international network. By investing in academic diplomacy and in our strategic alliances, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences again endorses its efforts in building durable relations with its partners.

All our partners (universities, universities of applied sciences, NGOs, companies, etc.) were selected for their complementarity in terms of student and teaching staff mobility, educational and research approach, and opportunities for cooperation on social themes.

Regarding our partnerships with higher education institutions, we are currently collaborating with 282 partners in 48 countries.

Strategic AlliancesOut of the network of institutions in countries that are not part of the European Union, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences opted for a strategic collaboration with five partner countries, i.e. the ‘strategic alliances’: Ecuador, Canada, China, South Africa and Vietnam.

Collaboration with these countries goes beyond a normal alliance. The partnerships encompass all possible domains, so that both parties get the best out of the international cooperation:

> Mutual student & staff mobility;> Joint programmes;> Collaboration in research and services;> Benchmarking for departments and offices;> The further expansion of an international network.

Each alliance is represented by a ‘strategic agent’ who follows up on the contacts with the institutions and who is also the contact person for the various departments that are interested in expanding their cooperation.

Our strategic agents are:

Choosing Artevelde University of Applied Sciences as an International PartnerChoosing Artevelde University of Applied Sciences as a partner means choosing for acknowledged quality, an international and innovative mindset, a focus on 21st century skills, entrepreneurship and innovation, and sustainable development all spread across 12 campuses in the largest student city in Belgium.

Acknowledged Quality

All higher education institutions in Flanders are periodically subjected to an institutional review. This review assesses the institution’s educational policy and how the institution ensures the quality of its programmes, based on the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG, 2015). A positive assessment results in the reaccreditation of the programmes.

In 2017, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences was subjected to an institutional review and received a positive assessment. Therefore, all of our programmes (bachelor programmes, advanced bachelor programmes and associate degree programmes) are accredited until at least 2023. The Higher Education Register contains all detailed information on accredited programmes in Flanders (www.highereducation.be).

Accreditation is the formal recognition of a programme, based on the decision of an independent quality assurance agency, the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO), which verifies whether the programme meets the predetermined minimum quality requirements. The NVAO is listed on the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR). It is also a member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) and the European Consortium for Accreditation (ECA).

More information on accreditation and the accreditation body for higher education programmes in Flanders and the Netherlands can be found on www.nvao.net/en

International Mindset

Whatever we do, we always start from an international mindset:

> International and intercultural competences serve as the guidelines for determining our learning objectives;> We communicate extensively about our international projects and achievements, in order to encourage more and more students and staff to discover the world;> Thanks to the exchange of students and lecturers, people of various nationalities can meet and learn from each other.

21st-Century Skills

Global citizenship is a 21st-century skill we attach great importance to. However, the current society also faces many other challenges. We provide our students with the necessary tools so that they can actively contribute to this ‘new’ society, through the focus on:

> Research skills; > Sustainable development;> Digital literacy;> Co-creation;> Self-directed learning;> Entrepreneurial spirit.

Gentrepreneur Company

As part of Gentrepreneur, the student cooperative Gentrepreneur Company offers practical support to student-entrepreneurs. They can come to the cooperative for the creation of a company regis-tration number, for accounting services and for a coworking space.

Start to Start

Start to Start is a must for those who want to be well-prepared before taking the leap into entre-preneurship. After the course, students obtain the business management certificate recognised by the Flemish Government.

Creative Weeks

Each department organises a creative week in which students and lecturers are challenged to give their creativity free rein, to examine current problems with a fresh look, and to take a close look at innovation in their sector.

32

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences fosters and applauds entrepreneurship and creativity. We help our students and staff to come up with their own ideas, to develop concepts and to be innovative through various initiatives:

3232

Idea Factory

Idea Factory supports students in developing their vague ideas and putting them into action. It points out important issues to starting entrepreneurs and brings them into contact with the right people.

Student-Entrepreneur Status

Students who combine their education with their own business are granted the student-entrepreneur status. This ensures that they have enough room to combine the elaboration of their idea with schoolwork and exams.

Gentrepreneur

Gentrepreneur is an umbrella organisation for young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 25, in which Artevelde University of Applied Sciences collaborates with the other educational institutions in Ghent and the City of Ghent to stimulate entrepreneurship.

All this right at the heart of Europe: Ghent!

City of Students and Living Life to the Fullest

With over 70,000 students, Ghent is the number one student city in Flanders. 15,000 of them are studying at one of the twelve campuses of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences scattered around the city. Students who study and live in the city, share it with its inhabitants. Whether it’s barbecueing in one of our 122 parks, tasting some of our 250 different beers in a bar, or silently admiring the rich art Ghent has to offer in one of the 13 museums, a diverse mix of young and old is always there.

City of History and Culture

You cannot only admire our rich history in the many museums; the city centre also has stunning medieval architecture for you to discover. Get lost in the many tiny cobbled streeds and alleys of Patershol quarter, enjoy an ice cream while sitting by the waterside at Graslei or Korenlei, and visit the spectacular Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts: a castle with a very turbulent past, closely intertwined with the complex and often stormy political and social history of the city. It is the only remaining medieval castle with a moat and largely intact defence system in Flanders.
