This past Sunday, the pillar and foundation got a little bit stronger. We rejoice because 75 new members joined us in upholding the truth of God. These new brothers and sisters, listed on the facing page, add their efforts to our mission to be a living support of nothing less than the words of the Almighty God.
If you would like to become part of Grace Church through membership, feel free to stop by the Member Center after any service today to find out more. We offer classes the first three Sundays of every month to help believers get connected to one another for the purpose of standing side by side upholding God’s truth.
For more information about membership at Grace Church, visit gracechurch.org/membership or stop by the Member Center after any Sunday service.
UPHOLDING GOD’S TRUTH TOGETHER
his point by also comparing the church to the “support” of a building; that is, the building’s foundation.
The apostle’s metaphors are clear—the church is to be a stable foundation and sturdy pillar for the truth. We stand together on the truth of God’s Word and we hold it high for the world to see. No single person is the pillar and foundation for God’s truth; it is the church that is the pillar and foundation. We stand together. Together we receive the teaching of God’s truth, together we fellowship around God’s truth, together we join our voices and sing God’s truth, together we comfort each other in God’s truth, together we run alongside each other in obeying God’s truth, and together we go out into the world to proclaim God’s truth.
MEMBERSHIP MINISTRIES
The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Timothy in order to give instructions to young Pastor Timothy on “how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). In this verse, Paul used two architectural metaphors to describe the church—a pillar and a support.
These illustrations would have resonated with Timothy and all the believers at his church in Ephesus because in the center of their city was the impressive temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was a beautiful white structure, 450 feet long, 225 feet wide, and 60 feet high. A total of 127 solid marble pillars supported the massive roof of this temple. In the same way these pillars held up the roof of the temple, the church is to uphold the truth of God. Paul strengthened
