26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The house of Judah Ben Hur was noble and wealthy. It sat in the heart of Jerusalem, at the center of Jewish life. Even though they were ruled by Rome, this Jewish family knew what it was to have pride and privilege. They were well born and well off.
However, through a series of misfortunes and calamities, the house of Judah Ben Hur collapses. His mother and his sister were sent to the dungeons, where they eventually contract the disease of leprosy. Judah himself – played in the famous film by Charlton Heston – is condemned to serve as a slave in the Roman galleys. Chained to fellow prisoners, Ben Hur is forced to march to his doom. On the way they stop for a rest in a village, and a local man, quiet and strong, comes to give a cup of cold water to the tired and exhausted prisoner. Ben Hur looks up to see who is being kind to him and finds himself gazing into the eyes of Jesus of Nazareth. This moment stays with him forever. He will never forget the kindness, the cup of water, or the face of the man who gave it to him.
Years later, when Ben Hur is restored to life and honor and position, he returns to Jerusalem and to his old family house. One day a noisy procession passes in the street as a man is jostled and pushed along to his public execution, carrying a cross. Filled with compassion for the prisoner, so condemned, Ben Hur moved forward to help and lift the fallen man. Their eyes meet, and once again Judah Ben Hur is looking into the eyes of Jesus of Nazareth. The helper has become the victim.
As Jesus passes on his way to Calvary, his shadow falls across two leper women in that crowd, the mother and sister of Judah Ben Hur, and they were healed of their disease.
In this powerful scene we see played out the words of Jesus, ‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink, she/he will most certainly not lose her/his reward.’ The presence of Christ is a healing presence. The kindness of Ben Hur in running to help a fallen man is rewarded immediately in the healing of his family.
This drama plays out for us an everlasting truth. Every good deed, even the least, will be remembered and rewarded. God is faithful, and God is generous. Equally, every deed, every wrongdoing, even the least, will also be remembered and must be answered for. And because the Lord loves us, he warns us. Get rid of evil in your life NOW. Don’t wait until it too late, until it gets a hold of you. It is vivid and demanding language that Jesus uses, but we know that he is not literally telling us to cut off our
hands and feet or tear out our eyes. He is telling us to CUT OUT the things which give scandal to others and hinder them on their journey.
Life is a great drama, and it is a story of good and evil. The struggle for joy and happiness, the tragedies of sorrow and sin, are played out everyday, everywhere. This is no pointless tale, told by an idiot, signifying nothing. It is the story of God’s love for you and me and everyone. It is the story of our journey through life.
In our television age, we watch so many stories unfolding all around us, stories of war and violence; we tend to forget that we are IN these stories. They are our stories. What happens to the people who share this world and this time with us is part of my story.
As people pass by ‘in my village’ it is possible for me to give them a cup of water to help them on their way. With that cup comes the kindness, the care, the comfort, and the companionship we all seek in this life. We have riches to give to each other.
As people fall under the crosses they carry, I can reach down to help them. Looking into their eyes I may see the eyes of Jesus of Nazareth.
And who knows, the shadows of other people’s gentle presence in my own life may bring healing to me, and restore my heart and my house.
Then we will not lose the reward.
In the shadow of God,
Fr. Bob Clark
Pastor

WORD OF LIFE
“In a striking way, we see today a heightening of the tension between our nation's founding principles and political reality. We see this in diminishing respect for the inalienable right to life and in the elimination of legal protections for those who are most vulnerable. There can be no
genuine justice in our society until the truths on which our nation was founded are more perfectly realized in our culture and law.”
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics
INTERFAITH CAREER NETWORK
If you have an interest in supporting job seekers in our community, we'd love to hear from you! Even with the improved job market there are continuing layoffs, and many seeking a better opportunity. We are staffed by volunteers and are seeking new members to join our ICN team (www.interfaithcareernetwork.org).
Anyone interested in supporting others during their search would be welcome. We are in need of volunteers for marketing efforts (including social media, website support, etc.) as well as anyone who could assist with job coaching advice or networking help. A business or HR professional for one-on-one coaching would be a great addition! If you have a warm smile but no related job search experience, we need you as well for greeters at our monthly meetings and quarterly resume reviews. This September is our 11th anniversary of helping others help themselves. You, too can help make a difference! Call Judy 708.352.8943 or Tom 708.772.4231 to learn more.

HOW GOD INTENDS US TO LIVE
Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food for the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protecting strangers, orphans, and widows; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his doorstep, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. We are once again being given clear indications about how God intends for us to live our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Woe to the complacent, stretched comfortably on their couches! (Amos 6:1a, 4-7). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146) Second Reading — Pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11-16). Gospel — There was a rich man who dined sumptuously each day. Lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Over the past century, a desire to recover a deep sense of unity among all believers in Christ has grown. The “ecumenical movement” (from the Greek word meaning the “the whole inhabited world”) began among Protestant Christians, but was given great energy in 1920 with a letter from the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, calling for closer dialogue and cooperation among Christians. In 1960, Pope John XXIII invited Protestant and Orthodox observers to the Second Vatican Council. In 1964, the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism named these Christians “separated brethren,” a huge leap forward from the time of labeling them as “outside the Church.” A year later, a new pope, Paul VI, and the Orthodox Patriarch officially nullified the condemnations that walled off East from West for nine hundred years.
The pace and optimism of the 1960s has sadly waned, and the signs of progress toward unity are few; yet there are wider agreements on sharing Communion among various Christian denominations, and among Protestants agreements regarding sharing of ecclesiastical life and ministry. Among the success stories of the ecumenical movement are greater cooperation among Christian clergy, a similar Lectionary for Protestants and Catholics, and even experiments in the monastic life and common worship. —James Field, Copyright © J. A NOTE FROM DEACON STUART
Dear Parish Family,
Every year, the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago come together to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We do this with a dinner and a fundraising event, which will take place on October 6.
Monies raised at the St. Francis Dinner support the following activities: several charities that serve the poorest and most marginalized (orphans, the mentally ill, the homeless, the incarcerated and the recovering), continuing theological and ministerial education for deacons and wives, a mutual aid fund for deacons in need, and operating funds for the Diaconate Council.
This year, I am asking if you’d be interested in purchasing a booklet of 6 raffle tickets for $25. The first prize is $1,000, second is $500 winner, with two $100 winners, and six $50 winners.
If you’d be interested in taking a chance (winner need not be present!) and purchasing a book, see directions below.
We are a nonprofit organization and all donations qualify as a charitable donation. Thank you on behalf of Marlene and me and the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago for your support.

The RCIA gives people on a faith journey an opportunity to “come and see” not only what the Catholic Church and a life of faith in it is all about, but also an opportunity to explore how the Lord may be calling them into his life in a more complete way.
If you are interested in more information or know someone who is or would like to participate in the RCIA, please contact Fr. Ken at 708 352 6209 ext 205 for participation and registration requirements.

THE ROSARY: A PRAYER OF HUMILITY AND LOVE
What I love about praying the Rosary is that Mary asks each of us to join with her in remembering and celebrating God’s most generous gift to us, His Son. October is Mary’s month, so let us join with her this coming month by saying her chosen prayers. Maybe your child received a rosary for his/her first communion. Maybe you have a special intention close to your heart. Maybe you just feel called to honor Our Mother and her Son. You can come at 7:15 before the 8 am Mass during the week and pray the Rosary then. Or stay after the 11am Mass on Sundays and join us in the Children’s Room.
Next weekend the Living Rosary is hosting a table in the Narthex with all things rosary. Bring your broken rosaries for repair or get a new one for a friend. We will also pray the entire rosary in the Parish Center on Sunday, October 13th, at 12:15. It takes some extra time to pray all twenty decades (usually you only pray five decades), but it is a most moving way to pray your way through the gospels. Come and spend some time with Mother Mary.
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
The St. Cletus Holy Name Society will have their next meeting on Friday, October 4th at 8:00 PM in the Father Gallagher Room of the Parish Center. HNS typically meets on the first
Friday of each month (except July and August), all men of the parish are welcome.

HITZEMAN GRIEF SUPPORT GATHERING
We welcome you and your family to join us for our Grief Support Gatherings which occur the second Tuesday of each month. We know how losing a loved one affects the core of each family. Whether the passing is sudden or after a long battle with illness, each soul has a story. And everyone has their own way of coping with such a loss; sometimes, we don’t know how to start finding a way through the fog of emotions and despair. The holidays are times we set aside to celebrate and spend time with family. After the death of a loved one, this time of the year can be very difficult to manage. Watching others laugh and rejoice in the spirit of the holidays when you might feel sad and overwhelmed can be painful. It’s a true reminder of your loss and how much your life has changed. The first holiday season without your loved one can be especially hard. In this discussion you will learn strategies for coping with grief during the holidays. Hopefully these tips will help you or someone you know who is grieving have a better experience.
